UW-Madison Commencement: Winter Indoors, Spring at Camp Randall

One ceremony in December, a bigger round in May

Madison runs two commencements a year and they are not the same size.

Winter Commencement is 10:00 a.m. on Sunday 13 December 2026, at the Kohl Center. A single indoor ceremony.

Spring runs 7 and 8 May 2027, a larger multi-ceremony round across two days.

If your ceremony is the December one, most of the alarming lodging evidence about this campus does not apply to you. Those hotel bookings ran out for spring, not winter. The winter round is four months away and materially easier.

Ten in the morning, on a Sunday, in December

The time is the thing to plan around, and it is less forgiving than it looks.

A 10:00 a.m. Sunday start means being seated by around half past nine. For anyone not already in Madison, that rules out a same-morning drive: southern Wisconsin in mid-December is not a route to attempt against a fixed deadline, and the alternative is leaving in the dark.

The practical consequence is that the night families need is the Saturday, not the Sunday. That is the night to book and the night that fills, and it is worth being specific about because booking the wrong side of a ceremony is a common and expensive error.

The Kohl Center takes the weather out of the ceremony

An indoor arena removes one variable entirely. Whatever December is doing outside, the ceremony itself is unaffected.

What it does not remove is the approach: parking, the walk, and the drive in. On a December Sunday morning those are the three things that will decide whether the morning is comfortable, and they are all upstream of the building.

Two things follow from that table.

Your degree decides your day, and the two are not interchangeable. A family with a PhD candidate is booking the Friday night; a family with an undergraduate is booking the Saturday. A family with both is booking both, and there is no way to compress it.

The Saturday ceremony is outdoors, in an 80,000-seat football stadium, in early May in Wisconsin. That is a different proposition from the indoor Friday ceremony, and the carry-in rules below treat it differently too.

Doors opening two hours ahead is the number to plan around rather than the start time. Seating is general admission and first come, first served, so a large party that wants to sit together is arriving at the door time, not the start time.

What you can carry in, and the umbrella trap

UW’s carry-in policy is stricter than most and it is worth reading before you pack.

Each attendee may bring one small clutch purse, 6.5 by 4.5 inches, plus one clear bag: either a one-gallon clear storage bag or a 12 by 6 by 12 inch clear tote. Diaper bags are allowed when accompanied by a child.

Barred: bags larger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches, including backpacks, ordinary purses, camera bags, drawstring bags, fanny packs and binocular cases. Everything is subject to search, there is no storage at either venue, and UW says items left at the gates are disposed of. There is no coming back to the car for it either, realistically, once you are in the queue.

And the detail that catches people out:

Umbrellas (prohibited in Camp Randall Stadium only. Umbrellas are permitted in the Kohl Center.)

The ceremony held outdoors is the one where you cannot bring an umbrella. Bring a rain jacket to the Saturday ceremony, not a brolly.

Rain or shine, because it cannot be moved

UW is unusually direct about weather, and the reasoning is worth quoting:

The ceremony is scheduled to take place rain or shine. Given the size of the gathering, it’s not feasible to move the ceremony to an alternate date.

In severe weather a ceremony may be delayed, paused or cancelled on the day, with guest safety the stated priority. What will not happen is a reschedule. For an outdoor May ceremony that is the honest position, and it means the contingency you need is clothing rather than a spare date.

What we checked, and what we could not

The winter date, time and venue come from UW-Madison’s own commencement site, with the weekday verified as a Sunday against the calendar.

Most of what families ask about here is published. Spring per-ceremony times, venues and door times are published and are set out above. Which schools graduate on which spring day is published: doctoral, MFA and medical professional candidates on the Friday, bachelor’s, law and master’s on the Saturday. There are no ticket limits, because there are no tickets.

Still outstanding: final parking detail for spring, which UW says will come closer to the event, though it confirms complimentary parking in several campus lots over the weekend.
