Three dates, two cities

UW holds commencement twice a year. What that sentence hides is that the spring half happens in two places.

Both spring dates come from UW’s own academic calendar, which lists them two lines apart. They are easy to miss if you stop reading at the December round.

The Casper ceremony is a different trip entirely

Worth stating plainly because nothing about the name warns you.

UW at Casper is a University of Wyoming programme delivered in Casper, roughly 150 miles north-east of Laramie, about two and a half hours’ drive. Its commencement is its own ceremony on its own date.

Two consequences, both of which cost money:

It is not a Laramie booking. Everything on our Wyoming graduation hotels page is about Laramie’s thin market and the I-80 corridor. None of it describes Casper, which is a larger town with its own hotel base and no mountain pass between it and the ceremony.

It is on a Monday. A Monday ceremony means a Sunday night, and a Sunday night is the one people forget to book because it sits outside the weekend they had in mind. If your family is attending both the Saturday Laramie ceremony and the Monday Casper one, that is a four-night trip across two towns, not a weekend.

UW has not published a time for any of the three

This is a genuine gap rather than something we failed to find, and the reason is worth knowing.

UW’s commencement website is currently showing the May 2026 cycle. It heads its schedule “COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY SCHEDULE - MAY 16, 2026” and asks graduates to register to walk “by April 3rd, 2026”. Both dates have passed. The site has not been rolled forward.

That page does carry a full schedule, with an 8:00 a.m. undergraduate session, a 12:30 p.m. graduate session and a 3:30 p.m. undergraduate session split by college. We are not putting those hours on this page. They describe a ceremony that has already happened, and a university that has not updated its site is not a university that has confirmed next time will match.

What the same page does support, because it is written about UW commencement generally rather than about one date:

• Guests sit in the Arena-Auditorium. The War Memorial Fieldhouse is a space for graduates only, used for line-up and check-in. Guests who follow their graduate there will be in the wrong building.
• Commencement is open to the public and is not a ticketed event.
• Seating is first come, first served.
• Commencement is held twice per year, winter and spring.

So plan the day around the date and the venue, both of which are solid, and check UW’s site for the hour once it refreshes.

Graduating is not the same as walking, and UW says so

A small thing that catches families out at UW specifically, because the university spells it out where most do not:

Commencement is a ceremony held twice per year (winter and spring) honoring students who have recently or will soon graduate… Participating in commencement does not automatically mean that a student has graduated.

A student can walk before finishing, and a student can finish without walking. If you are travelling for the ceremony, the thing to confirm with your graduate is that they have registered to walk, which is a separate step from applying to graduate. The registration deadline is set each cycle and was in early April for the May 2026 round.

December in Laramie is its own problem

The ceremony detail above is the easy half. The hard half is the drive.

Laramie sits at over 7,000 feet on I-80, and the stretch either side of it closes in winter often enough that the local tourism bureau publishes a guide to hotels for when the interstate shuts. A December graduation and a road closure draw on exactly the same rooms, and the second crowd arrives with no notice.

That is not a reason to panic, and we have not measured a graduation sellout in Laramie. It is a reason to hold a room earlier than the size of the town would suggest, and to build slack into the drive rather than the schedule. What we checked, and how we had to check it

All three dates were read from UW’s registrar academic calendar and cross-checked against its 2026-2027 full-year Academic Administrative Calendar on 18 August 2026. Days of the week were verified independently: 19 December 2026 is a Saturday, 15 May 2027 a Saturday and 17 May 2027 a Monday.

An access note, recorded because the next check will hit the same wall. uwyo.edu refuses automated clients from our environment on both of the usual routes: the reading proxy times out on its HTML pages and returns a cached advertising-tracker snapshot instead of the page, and a direct request has the connection dropped. The pages above were read in a real browser. The one exception is the full-year calendar PDF, which does return through the proxy. A failure to load uwyo.edu is a block, not evidence that a date is unpublished.

Not published, and each is a real gap: a start time for any of the three dates, the number of ceremonies on each day, any college split, and any venue for the Casper ceremony. Nor does UW list a Casper ceremony for December; the calendar carries one for spring only, which we record as unpublished rather than as confirmed absent.
