Ball State holds Fall Commencement on Saturday 12 December 2026. It is ONE ceremony recognising all graduates together, roughly two hours long, and it is not ticketed: open seating, no guest limit, doors one hour before. A clear bag policy applies. What Ball State has NOT published is the start time or the venue for December 2026, and its Fall Commencement page still shows last year's ceremony, so nothing on this page treats the 2025 arrangement as current. Spring Commencement follows on Saturday 1 May 2027 and works completely differently: a university-wide ceremony plus separate college ceremonies running late into the evening.

One ceremony, and anyone may come
Ball State’s December round is structurally the simplest on this site, and its guest policy is the most generous.
Saturday 12 December 2026. Ball State’s fall page states it in one line: “There is one ceremony that takes place in the Fall that recognizes all graduates together.” No college splits, no staggered start times, no choosing which of two ceremonies your family attends. It is estimated at about two hours.
Then the part worth travelling on:
“Ball State Commencement ceremonies do not require tickets for graduates and guests.”
Open seating. Venues open one hour before. And from the fall page, graduates are welcome to invite as many guests as they would like.
Almost every other university covered here rations seats. Four tickets, six, eight, reserved inside a window that sometimes does not reopen. Ball State asks for none of that. If a graduate wants their grandparents, both parents, four siblings and two cousins in the room, that is permitted.
Two practical consequences. First, arrive early, because open seating means the good seats belong to whoever gets there when the doors open rather than to whoever has the right ticket. Second, if you are the one booking hotel rooms, ask your graduate how many people they have actually invited before you assume it is four.
One rule that does bite: Ball State enforces a clear bag policy, published separately as a PDF. It is the sort of thing discovered at a security line, so check it before you pack.
What Ball State has not published for December
This is the honest part, and it is more than usual.
Ball State has published the date and nothing else. No start time, no venue.
Its Fall Commencement page does show a time and a venue, and it is important to explain why they are not on this page. That page is still headed “2025 Fall Commencement” and describes Saturday, December 13, at 10 a.m. in Worthen Arena, with the arena opening at 9:00 a.m. 13 December was the Saturday in 2025. 12 December is the Saturday in 2026. The page is awaiting its annual rollover, so its details describe last year’s ceremony.
The fall round has been a single ceremony at Worthen for some time, so a 10 a.m. Worthen start would surprise nobody. That is a reasonable expectation, and it is still not a published fact, so this page will not print it as one. Check back once the page rolls over.
Spring is a different animal entirely
If your graduate finishes in spring rather than December, do not plan the same trip.
Spring Commencement is Saturday 1 May 2027. Based on how Ball State ran the 2026 round, the day looks like this:
| Time | Ceremony | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 10 a.m. | Main, university-wide | The Quad |
| 12:30 p.m. | Fine Arts / Sciences and Humanities | Emens Auditorium / Worthen Arena |
| 4 p.m. | Architecture and Planning / Health and Teachers College | Emens Auditorium / Worthen Arena |
| 7:30 p.m. | Business / Communication, Information and Media | Worthen Arena |
The detail that changes travel plans: master’s and undergraduate candidates are not individually recognised at the main ceremony. Ball State says so directly. They cross the stage as their name is called at their college ceremony, and the university encourages attending both.
So a spring family that wants to hear the name read is committed from 10 a.m. until as late as 9:30 p.m., depending on the college. That is a two-night trip by any sensible reading. December, a single two-hour ceremony, is not.
The 2027 times and venues have not been published; the table above is the 2026 shape, shown to explain the structure rather than to be booked against.
Where to sleep
Muncie returned 12 bookable properties on a live check for the December window, Anderson 10, and Indianapolis 275. Anderson is nearer but smaller, so it is not the fallback it looks like. Full reasoning and the campus hotel’s 24 rooms are on the where to stay page, and the ladder above will check your own dates against all three.
Absent rather than estimated
Not published at the time of writing and therefore not stated here: the December 2026 start time and venue, the 2027 venues and college schedule, parking arrangements for the December round, and whether the 2025 fall page will roll over before or after tickets and logistics are finalised. Nothing from the 2025 fall round or the 2026 spring round has been carried across to stand in for December. Where this page describes either, it says which year it is describing.

Frequently asked questions
What time does the December ceremony start?
Ball State has not published it. The Fall Commencement page on the university site is still headed "2025 Fall Commencement" and gives Saturday 13 December at 10 a.m. in Worthen Arena, which was last year's date. That is a page awaiting its annual rollover, not a statement about 2026, so this page does not repeat the time or the venue as though they were confirmed.
Do we need tickets, and is there a guest limit?
No tickets, and no limit. Ball State states that its commencement ceremonies "do not require tickets for graduates and guests", with open seating and venues opening one hour before each ceremony. The fall page adds that graduates are welcome to invite as many guests as they would like. Arrive early if seating together matters, since open seating rewards whoever turns up first.
How long is it, and is it one ceremony or several?
In December it is a single ceremony that recognises all graduates together, estimated at about two hours. That is different from spring, where a university-wide ceremony is followed by separate college ceremonies at other venues.
What is different about the spring round?
Almost everything about the shape of the day. In 2026 the main university-wide ceremony ran at 10 a.m. on the Quad, and college ceremonies followed at 12:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Emens Auditorium and Worthen Arena. Crucially, master's and undergraduate candidates are NOT individually recognised at the main ceremony; they cross the stage at their college ceremony. Families who want to hear the name read need both, which turns spring into a very long day.
Is there a bag policy?
Yes. Ball State enforces a clear bag policy, published as a PDF and linked from its security and safety guidance. Worth checking before you travel, because it is the kind of rule that gets discovered at the door.
When is the 2027 ceremony?
Saturday 1 May 2027, from Ball State's Upcoming Commencement Ceremony Dates table. No venue or start time is attached to it yet, and the college-by-college schedule for 2027 has not been posted.
