The Saturday starts at quarter to nine

Most homecoming pages tell you the date. The number that actually decides your booking here is a time.

Ball State’s homecoming Saturday, 24 October 2026, opens with the Chase Charlie 5K at 8:45 a.m. and the Homecoming Parade at 9 a.m., running from Muncie Central through downtown and onto campus.

Nine in the morning is early enough to break the commute. Indianapolis, the only market with real depth near Muncie, is an hour away. To stand on a parade route at nine you are leaving Indianapolis around half past seven, in the dark, in late October, and then looking for parking in a town where every street near the route is closed or full.

So the recommendation is simple and it is the whole point of this page: book the Friday night. If anyone in your party is running the 5K, riding in the parade, or in one of the organisations staging it, the Friday night is not a preference.

Friday has its own draw anyway. The Bed Race runs at noon on Riverside Avenue, which is exactly the sort of thing people arrive early for.

The full week, as Ball State publishes it

Unusually, Ball State posts the entire week with times attached rather than a vague banner. Here it is.

The three TBDs are all downstream of one unknown. The kickoff has not been set, and the tailgate and Reunion Row are scheduled around it. This page will not guess at them; for a MAC game the time often lands only a fortnight out.

The royalty tradition, incidentally, dates to 1938, which is a decent indication of how seriously the week is taken locally.

Nine hotels, and why that is the tighter number

Ball State’s graduation weekend is the one people assume is hardest. The live numbers say otherwise.

A check on 11 August 2026, same day, same method, two-night stays:

• Homecoming weekend, 23 to 25 October: 9 bookable properties in Muncie.
• Commencement weekend, 11 to 13 December: 12 bookable properties in Muncie.

Three fewer properties for homecoming, and homecoming is the nearer date. Both are small numbers, but the ordering is worth knowing if you assumed graduation was the crunch.

There is a structural reason. Ball State plays only four home games in the entire 2026 season, and the games at Massachusetts and against Buffalo fall on Wednesdays in the MAC’s midweek television window. Muncie gets very few Saturdays where the stadium, the alumni programme and the town all fire at once. This is the one.

Sacramento State is a MAC newcomer making its first trip to Muncie, which adds a visiting contingent that has never booked this town before.

The fallback, and the one that is not

Anderson looks like the sensible near miss and it is not. It is a smaller hotel market than Muncie, so on a weekend when Muncie sells out there is little reason to expect Anderson to hold. Indianapolis is the fallback, at the cost of an hour each way, and against a 9 a.m. parade that hour is exactly the problem.

Which loops back to the same conclusion: the Friday night in Muncie is worth more here than it looks.

What is not established

The football kickoff time, and therefore the CharlieTown tailgate and Reunion Row start times, all of which Ball State lists as TBD or TBA. No parade route map or road closure list was published at the time of writing. No named Muncie hotel was confirmed sold out for the weekend; the nine-property figure is total bookable supply on the date checked, not a sellout claim. Ticket prices for the game were not recorded here, since the university sells them through athletics and they change.
