This is one of the easier clusters on this site, and the reason is geography. EKU's ceremonies are at the Baptist Health Arena at Alumni Coliseum, and Richmond's chain hotels sit two miles away at the I-75 exit, three of them within a block: the Hampton Inn with 97 rooms, the Tru by Hilton with 92 and the TownePlace Suites with 93. Behind them, Berea is 18 minutes south, Winchester 30 minutes northeast, and Lexington, a city with hotel districts in every tier, 38 minutes up the interstate. Rooms will exist; the question is how far from the arena. What shapes the booking is EKU's two-day pattern: the Fall 2026 round is Thursday 10 and Friday 11 December, stated by the university, and the master calendar's "May 14" for Spring 2027 is almost certainly the second of two days. EKU flags that spring date itself as subject to change, so the rule for this cluster is simple: book the exit early, for the night before your ceremony, and only on a cancellable rate. Treat Lexington as the fallback rather than the default.

Two miles, one exit, three hotels
EKU’s ceremonies are held at the Baptist Health Arena at Alumni Coliseum, on the Eastern Bypass. Richmond’s chain hotels are two miles away at the I-75 interchange, and three of them sit within a block of one another.
Hampton Inn Richmond, 1099 Barnes Mill Road. 97 rooms per the Northstar Meetings Group directory.
Tru by Hilton Richmond, 1020 Amberly Way. 92 rooms per Cvent.
TownePlace Suites by Marriott Richmond, 2018 Colby Taylor Drive. 93 rooms per Northstar. Extended-stay format, which suits a family staying two nights.
About 280 rooms, five minutes from the arena. EKU’s graduation guide links “Richmond Area Hotel Info” rather than naming any of them; there is no university block.
What the numbers do not include
No graduate count was verified for EKU’s 2026 or 2027 rounds, so this page cannot set the 280 rooms against a class size the way most clusters on this site do. That is a gap, stated rather than filled. No matched-window availability series has been run for Richmond either.
What can be said is structural. Three named hotels at the exit, more in town, and a regional city 38 minutes up the interstate. Rooms will exist for this ceremony. The question is how close.
The ring is unusually deep
Berea, 18 minutes south on I-75. A college town with its own cluster of chain hotels at the exit. Berea College holds its own May commencement; check the date before assuming it is quiet.
Winchester, 30 minutes northeast. An I-64 town with branded hotels at its exits, smaller than Lexington and usually cheaper.
Lexington, 38 minutes north on I-75. A city with hotel districts across every tier, and inventory that pays no attention to EKU’s calendar. If the Richmond exit is gone, this is where the trip lands, and the only cost is the interstate on a ceremony morning.
Drive times are off-peak road routes computed on 12 September 2026, not measured journeys.
Which night, and why the calendar misleads
EKU runs commencement over two days and splits the colleges between them. The Fall 2026 round is Thursday 10 and Friday 11 December, stated in full on EKU’s graduation guide together with the arena.
For Spring 2027, EKU’s master calendar prints “May 14”**, one date with an asterisk meaning subject to change. Read that with care. The same calendar printed “May 8” for Spring 2026, and the ceremonies actually ran Thursday 7 and Friday 8 May. The calendar’s single date is the last day of the round, not the only one. Plan Spring 2027 as Thursday 13 and Friday 14 May until EKU says otherwise, and book the night before whichever day your graduate’s college is assigned.
Cancellable only, and the reason is EKU’s own footnote
The asterisk on “May 14*” resolves to *“Dates subject to change.” That is the university saying, in its own calendar, that the spring date is not final. Most clusters on this site suggest refundable rates as good practice; here it is the whole recommendation. Book Richmond’s exit hotels early, because 280 rooms go, and book them only on a rate you can cancel without penalty. A non-refundable room for a date the university has flagged is the one lodging mistake this page exists to prevent.
Not claimed
No hotel here publishes a commencement-specific minimum stay or cancellation rule. The Spring 2027 venue is unpublished; the arena is stated for December and is history for spring. The Spring 2026 guest-ticket rule was six per graduate, free, and it is not carried forward to either round.

Frequently asked questions
Which hotels are closest to the arena?
The Hampton Inn at 1099 Barnes Mill Rd, the Tru by Hilton at 1020 Amberly Way and the TownePlace Suites at 2018 Colby Taylor Drive, all at the I-75 exit about two miles and five minutes from the Baptist Health Arena. Room counts 97, 92 and 93 per Northstar and Cvent.
Does EKU publish a hotel list?
Its graduation and commencement guide links "Richmond Area Hotel Info" rather than naming properties. There is no university block.
Will the exit sell out?
No matched-window availability series has been run for Richmond, so this page publishes no count. About 280 rooms in the three named hotels against a two-day ceremony; no graduate count was verified for 2026 or 2027, so the class-size side of the arithmetic is missing here.
Is Lexington a realistic option?
Yes. 38 minutes north on I-75 with hotel districts in every tier and inventory that does not depend on EKU's calendar. The constraint is the interstate on a ceremony morning, not the rooms.
What about Berea?
18 minutes south, a college and interstate town with its own cluster of chain hotels at the exit. Berea College holds its own commencement in May, so check the date before assuming it is quiet.
Which nights do we need?
The night before your ceremony. For December that means Wednesday 9 or Thursday 10 December 2026, depending on which day your graduate's college is assigned. For Spring 2027 plan on Thursday 13 or Friday 14 May, hold both until EKU posts the schedule, and book only rooms you can cancel: EKU marks the spring date "subject to change".
Why does the calendar say one date if the ceremony is two days?
EKU's master calendar prints a single commencement date per term with an asterisk for "subject to change". It said "May 8" for Spring 2026, and the ceremonies ran Thursday 7 and Friday 8 May. The single date is the last day of the round, not the only day.
