GW's Commencement Weekend runs Thursday 13 May to Sunday 16 May 2027, with Spring Degree Conferral on the Sunday — confirmed in the university's own bulletin academic calendar, every weekday cross-checked. The fact that reorganises the whole trip is the venue: GW holds its University Commencement on the NATIONAL MALL. Not on campus, not in an arena — on federal parkland in the middle of Washington, outdoors. That changes what a good hotel is. The Mall has no parking of its own and sits inside a controlled public space, so a hotel's walk to a Metro station is worth more than its drive to the ceremony, which is the reverse of how most campuses work. Two other things to settle: the individual school celebrations are spread across the four days and were not published at this check, and GW has a negotiated lodging discount its own office says is open to "parents and visitors" — worth finding before you book.

What’s confirmed
GW’s own bulletin academic calendar gives Commencement Weekend as Thursday 13 May to Sunday 16 May 2027, with Spring Degree Conferral on Sunday 16 May. Every weekday was cross-checked and agrees. The same calendar ends classes on Monday 26 April and runs final examinations from Saturday 1 to Friday 7 May.
A correction worth recording, because it nearly went into this page. A first pass reported “Commencement Weekend, Saturday 1 May – Friday 7 May 2027” — which is in fact the final examination period on the very same calendar. A search summary had collapsed two adjacent rows into one. Reading the calendar directly separated them. It is the second time on this site that a summary has produced a plausible, wrong, well-formatted date.
The ceremony is on the National Mall
This is the fact that reorganises everything else.
GW publishes “Commencement on the National Mall” as a standing part of its ceremony arrangements. The University Commencement is not in a campus building and not in an arena — it is outdoors, on federal parkland, in the middle of Washington.
Four consequences follow, and none of them is obvious from a hotel booking page:
There is no venue car park. The Mall is public parkland, not a stadium with a lot attached. Whatever you are driving, you are not parking at the ceremony.
Access is on foot. From surrounding streets and Metro stations, through a controlled public space whose arrangements belong to the federal authorities rather than to the university.
Weather is live. Mid-May in Washington can be pleasant or it can be otherwise, and there is no roof.
Seating fills from the front. Open ground has no assigned seats, so arrival time buys you more than it would at a ticketed arena.
Which reverses the usual advice about hotels
On almost every other page on this site, the question is how close a hotel is to campus. Here that is close to the wrong question.
Judge a hotel by its walk to a Metro station. A venue with no parking, in a city with a good rail network, makes rail proximity worth more than road distance. A hotel two stops away that is a three-minute walk to the platform will beat one that is nominally nearer but awkward on foot with a family in formal clothes.
Arlington is a good illustration: across the river, cheaper than central DC, and on the Metro lines that serve both Foggy Bottom and the Mall. On paper it is further. In practice it is often easier.
The discount most families will never find
GW’s International Services Office states that the university “has negotiated hotel lodging discounts offering reduced pricing at specific properties” near the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses — and, in its own words:
“These rates are available for GW students and employees as well as parents and visitors!”
That eligibility wording is broader than most university rates and covers precisely the people who travel to a graduation. The specific properties and rates sit behind GW’s separate P2P booking site, which we could not capture, so this page names no hotel and no percentage — only that the programme exists and that you probably qualify.
In a market where rates are set by conventions and government travel rather than by anything at GW, a negotiated rate is a more reliable saving than shopping around.
The four days are not one event
Commencement Weekend spans Thursday to Sunday, with school-level celebrations distributed across it alongside the University Commencement. That school schedule was not published at this check.
So the Sunday conferral date may not be the only day you need. A family attending a Thursday school event and the Sunday ceremony is booking the whole weekend, not two nights.

Frequently asked questions
When is GW's 2027 commencement?
Commencement Weekend runs Thursday 13 May to Sunday 16 May 2027, with Spring Degree Conferral on Sunday 16 May. Both come from GW's own bulletin academic calendar and both weekdays check out. The same calendar ends classes on Monday 26 April and runs final examinations from Saturday 1 to Friday 7 May.
Where is the ceremony held?
The University Commencement is held on the National Mall — GW publishes "Commencement on the National Mall" as a standing part of its ceremony arrangements. It is outdoors, off campus, on federal parkland rather than in a university building.
What does an outdoor Mall ceremony change?
Most of the practical planning. There is no venue car park, because the Mall is public parkland rather than a stadium. Access is on foot from the surrounding streets and Metro stations. Weather is a live variable in mid-May. And seating on open ground fills from the front, so arrival time matters more than it would with assigned arena seats.
So how should we choose a hotel?
By its walk to a Metro station rather than its drive to the Mall. That is the opposite of the usual advice on this site, and it is specific to a venue with no parking in a city with a good rail network. A hotel two Metro stops away can beat one that is nominally closer but awkward to reach on foot.
Is there a discount we should know about?
Yes, and it is easy to miss. GW's International Services Office states that "GW has negotiated hotel lodging discounts offering reduced pricing at specific properties" and that "These rates are available for GW students and employees as well as parents and visitors!" The specific properties and rates sit behind GW's separate P2P booking site, which we could not capture, so check it directly — but the eligibility wording is unusually broad and covers exactly the people who travel to a graduation.
What about the school ceremonies?
GW runs school-level celebrations across the weekend alongside the University Commencement, and that schedule was not published at this check. If your graduate's school holds its own event, the Sunday conferral date may not be the only day you need.
How many nights?
Depends where in the four days your school celebration falls, which is the unpublished part. Two nights around the Sunday conferral is the minimum; a family attending both a Thursday school event and the Sunday ceremony is looking at the whole weekend.
