Two things decide this booking, and neither is distance to campus. FIRST, GW has negotiated lodging discounts and its own International Services Office says the rates are "available for GW students and employees as well as parents and visitors" — broader eligibility than most university rates, and exactly the people travelling to a graduation. Find that list before you compare prices anywhere else; in a city whose rates are set by conventions and government travel, a negotiated rate is a more reliable saving than shopping around. SECOND, the University Commencement is on the NATIONAL MALL, which is federal parkland with no car park of its own. So judge a hotel by its walk to a Metro station rather than its drive to the ceremony. Arlington makes the point: across the river, cheaper than central DC, and on the lines serving both Foggy Bottom and the Mall — on paper further, in practice often easier.

Start with the rate you may already have
Most families booking a Washington hotel go straight to comparing prices. On this cluster that is the second step, not the first.
GW’s own International Services Office states that the university “has negotiated hotel lodging discounts offering reduced pricing at specific properties” convenient to the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses — and then, in its own words:
“These rates are available for GW students and employees as well as parents and visitors!”
That last part is the unusual bit. Most university rates are for students and staff. This one names parents and visitors explicitly, which is the entire population travelling to a graduation.
The specific properties and rates sit behind GW’s separate P2P booking site, which we could not read — so this page names no hotel and quotes no percentage. What it can tell you is that the programme exists, that you almost certainly qualify, and that it is worth finding before you compare anything else.
That matters more here than it would elsewhere. Washington’s hotel rates answer to conventions, government travel and the city’s own event calendar — none of which has anything to do with GW. You cannot out-shop a convention. A negotiated rate is the one lever that reliably works.
Then book for the Metro, not the Mall
The University Commencement is held on the National Mall: federal parkland in the middle of the city, outdoors, with no car park of its own.
Which means everyone arrives on foot, from the surrounding streets and Metro stations, regardless of where they started the morning. The usual question on this site — how close is the hotel to campus — is close to the wrong one here.
Judge a hotel by its walk to a Metro platform. A hotel two stops out that is three minutes from the station will beat one that is nominally nearer but awkward to reach on foot with a family in formal clothes and no parking at the other end.
The areas
Downtown Washington, minutes east of Foggy Bottom, is the densest concentration and effectively the campus’s own neighbourhood. Walkable in parts. The most likely place for GW’s negotiated rate to apply — check the university’s list before booking direct.
Arlington, about fifteen minutes west across the Potomac, is the one I would look at first after the GW list. A substantial hotel base, generally below central DC for equivalent quality, and on the Metro lines that serve both Foggy Bottom and the Mall. Further on a map, easier in practice — which on this cluster is what counts.
Alexandria, about twenty-five minutes south, is a separate historic town rather than a suburb, with its own inventory and its own visitors. Cheaper than central DC and on a direct Metro line. Worth it if the trip is partly a holiday.
Silver Spring, about twenty minutes north on the Red Line, is the plain value option — and on a weekend morning the commuter flow runs against you rather than with you.
Why no hotel is named here
Most pages on this site name the closest property with a room count read from its own page. This one cannot, and the reason is specific: the properties nearest Foggy Bottom appear mainly on third-party booking sites, and the ones GW itself recommends sit behind its own login.
Publishing a room count or a rate we have not read would look more helpful and be worth less. The programme above is real and checkable; the areas are real. Between them they answer the question better than a padded table would.
One honest gap
This site publishes matched-window availability counts for some campuses — five equal-length searches in the same town, the ceremony window third, two controls either side. That measurement has not been run for Washington. Nothing on this page claims a supply figure. The judgement is that a market this size is not moved by one ceremony, and that on this cluster the variables that matter are the negotiated rate and the walk to a train.
The ring
| Town | Drive time | Typical availability | Rate vs. epicenter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Washington, DCCheck rooms in Downtown Washington, DC → | 10 min | Not measured for this cluster. The densest hotel concentration in the city and effectively the campus's own neighbourhood. | Full range, set by conventions and government travel rather than by GW. |
| Arlington, VACheck rooms in Arlington, VA → | 15 min | Not measured for this cluster. A substantial hotel base immediately across the Potomac. | Generally below central DC for equivalent quality. |
| Silver Spring, MDCheck rooms in Silver Spring, MD → | 20 min | Not measured for this cluster. A suburban downtown just over the district line. | Below central DC. |
| Alexandria, VACheck rooms in Alexandria, VA → | 25 min | Not measured for this cluster. A separate historic town with its own inventory and its own visitors. | Below central DC. |
Drive times are typical off-peak road times, not measured journeys, and on this cluster they are close to the wrong measure entirely. The ceremony is on the NATIONAL MALL, which has no parking of its own, sits inside a controlled federal space, and is served by several Metro stations. Judge a hotel by its walk to a Metro station rather than its drive to the Mall, and expect the approach on the day to be on foot regardless of where you started.

Frequently asked questions
Will we struggle to find a room?
No. Central Washington is one of the largest hotel markets in the United States and a single university weekend does not move it. No matched-window availability series has been run here so this page publishes no count, but supply is not the constraint on this cluster.
What sets the price then?
Conventions, government travel and the city's own calendar — none of which has anything to do with GW. That is worth knowing because it is checkable in advance, unlike graduation demand. If rates look high for your dates, find out what else Washington is hosting before assuming the ceremony is the cause.
What is the GW discount?
GW's International Services Office states that "GW has negotiated hotel lodging discounts offering reduced pricing at specific properties" close to the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses, and that "These rates are available for GW students and employees as well as parents and visitors!" The property list and rates sit behind GW's separate P2P booking site, which we could not read, so this page names no hotel and no percentage — only that the programme exists and that visitors are explicitly covered.
Why does the Metro matter so much here?
Because the ceremony is on the National Mall, which is public parkland rather than a stadium and has no car park attached. Everyone arrives on foot from the surrounding streets and stations regardless of where they started, so a hotel's walk to a Metro platform is worth more than its road distance to the Mall.
Is Arlington really a good idea?
Often the best one. It sits across the Potomac with a substantial hotel base, generally prices below central DC for equivalent quality, and is on the Metro lines serving both Foggy Bottom and the Mall. It is further on a map and easier in practice.
What about Alexandria or Silver Spring?
Both are cheaper than central DC and both are on direct Metro lines. Alexandria is a separate historic town rather than a suburb, which makes it a better base if the trip is partly a holiday. Silver Spring is plainer and closer in, with weekend traffic running against you rather than with you.
Why is no specific hotel named on this page?
Because none could be confirmed at source in a way worth publishing. The properties nearest Foggy Bottom appear mainly on third-party booking sites, and the ones GW itself recommends sit behind its P2P login. This site does not publish a room count or a rate it has not read, so the page gives you the programme and the areas instead.
