The December ceremony, and why Bozeman is expensive
Montana State holds a Fall ceremony on Friday 18 December 2026 at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse Arena, which this cluster did not carry. The ceremony is at 10:00 a.m., with the morning processional at 9:40 a.m.

Mid-range, and indistinguishable from its controls. Commencement is not what makes Bozeman hard.
What makes Bozeman hard is that it is a ski and Yellowstone resort town, and a December ceremony lands inside the ski season. The pressure on your wallet is real and it is seasonal: it does not relent because you booked early, and it will not spike because a graduation is happening.
That changes what you should do. Book for price and location rather than out of fear of a sellout, and if you are flying, look at Belgrade, which is where the airport actually is, fifteen minutes from campus.
Livingston is 30 minutes east over Bozeman Pass, which is worth respecting in December, and Butte is 85 minutes west and the cheapest option in reach.
A resort town that happens to have a university
Most campuses in this project sit in towns whose hotel demand is driven by the university. Bozeman inverts that, and it changes every piece of advice that follows.

Undergraduate Commencement is on 7 May 2027, with a Graduate Degree Ceremony on 3 May. That is inside the season he is describing, at the start of it rather than the peak, but inside it. You are competing with Yellowstone traffic, not just with other MSU families, and Yellowstone traffic books on its own schedule and does not care about a graduation.
What families have actually paid, and what that evidence is worth
MSU students have described paying $300 to $400 a night for a Bozeman hotel room during other big campus weekends.
That figure is worth quoting and worth qualifying in the same breath. The reporting behind it covers Parents Weekend, not Commencement. So it is real evidence about what Bozeman charges when demand spikes, and it is not a graduation-specific rate we can promise you will see.
We have graded this cluster on that distinction rather than smoothing it over. The underlying constraint is documented and it runs through the same May-to-September season Commencement falls in. The specific number belongs to a different weekend.
The one named property, and the limit of what we know
The Kimpton Armory Hotel is a downtown Bozeman hotel that has been reported sold out during a major MSU event weekend, which is the kind of specific, dated evidence this project prefers to a general warning.
What we could not find is any published commencement-specific policy: no minimum stay, no deposit deadline, no cancellation carve-out. The table below records what is published and leaves the rest empty rather than inventing terms that sound plausible.
The fallbacks are stranger here than anywhere else on this site
Normally the advice is simple: drive further, pay less. Bozeman breaks it.
Livingston is about 30 minutes east and is a real, separate town. It is also on the same Yellowstone-gateway season as Bozeman, so it is not an escape from the pricing, only from the immediate campus congestion. Convenient, not cheap.
Billings is Montana’s largest city with a genuinely deep hotel market that runs on its own business rather than on tourism, and it is clear of the gateway zone. It is also 2 hours 20 minutes away, which is a different kind of trip. For a Friday morning ceremony that is an early start or an extra night.
Belgrade is the town you would expect to use, closer than either. It does not resolve on the mapping tool this project uses to verify coordinates, so there is no working booking link to give you. It may well have rooms. We simply cannot stand behind a link to it, and saying so is better than leaving the gap unexplained.
What we checked, and what we could not
The dates, the fall venue and the fall times come from Montana State’s own commencement page, read in a real browser on 17 October 2026 after the site returned 403 to direct fetching, and 7 May 2027 was confirmed against the calendar as a Friday. The capacity quote and the sellout are from named local reporting with the reporter’s own dates attached.
What we could not do here, and did elsewhere: obtain a live per-night availability count for either ring town. The search tool’s results page failed to load repeatedly. So the ring is described structurally, by what those markets are, rather than by a number we did not actually see. That is why this cluster’s figure carries descriptions where others carry counts.
