WT's 2026-2027 calendar lists four commencement slots for May 2027, 10 am and 2 pm on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 May, and three for December 2026, Friday 11 at 2 pm and Saturday 12 at 10 am and 2 pm, all in the First United Bank Center on campus and all marked "Colleges [to be determined]". Until the colleges are assigned you cannot know which day is yours; in May 2026 Agriculture, Engineering, Fine Arts and Nursing walked Friday and Education, Social Sciences and Business Saturday. Canyon's hotels are three chains on 4th Avenue within half a mile of the arena, 206 rooms between them per HotelGuides, plus a small downtown motel. Amarillo is 24 minutes north with the airport and a metro hotel base. No tickets, open seating, doors an hour before, each ceremony under two hours.

Three hotels on one avenue

The First United Bank Center sits on 4th Avenue at the edge of the WT campus, and so do Canyon’s hotels. The Holiday Inn Express & Suites, 2901 4th Avenue, is a third of a mile away with 66 rooms and suites over three floors per HotelGuides. Next door the Best Western Palo Duro Canyon Inn & Suites, 2801 4th Avenue, has 50 rooms. The Hampton Inn & Suites, 3101 4th Avenue, is the largest at 90 rooms over four floors. All three are a walk or a two-minute drive from the arena.

Downtown, about a mile away, the Buffalo Inn, 300 23rd Street, is a small vintage motel with no published room count and a website that did not load for this check.

None of the four publishes a commencement-specific minimum stay, prepayment or cancellation rule, and none is claimed here. WT does not publish a hotel list on its graduation page.

Eight slots, and every one says “Colleges [to be determined]”

WT’s 2026-2027 academic calendar is unusually specific this far out. For May 2027: Friday 14 May, “Graduation - Colleges [to be determined] (10 am)” and “(2 pm)”; Saturday 15 May, the same two slots. For December 2026: Friday 11 December at 2 pm, Saturday 12 December at 10 am and 2 pm. Every entry carries the same words after “Colleges”: the calendar prints the university’s three-letter abbreviation for “to be determined”, spelled out in brackets on this page.

That is the whole problem for a family booking now. In May 2026, per the graduation page, Friday 10:00 a.m. was Agriculture and Natural Sciences with Engineering, Friday 2:00 p.m. Fine Arts and Humanities with Nursing and Health Sciences, Saturday 10:00 a.m. Education and Social Sciences, Saturday 2:00 p.m. Business. If 2027 repeats that, an engineering family needs the Thursday night and a business family needs nothing in Canyon at all. Until the assignment posts, book Thursday and Friday on 4th Avenue and release what you do not need, or hold Amarillo, where a wrong guess costs a 24-minute drive.

Amarillo is the ring

Amarillo, 24 minutes and 18 miles north on I-27, has the airport and a hotel base along I-40 and I-27 that dwarfs Canyon’s. Most out-of-town families will stay there. Hereford, 37 minutes west on US-60, and Plainview, 62 minutes south on I-27, are the other directions, for families arriving from New Mexico or Lubbock.

Drive times are off-peak road routes computed on 20 September 2026, not measured journeys. No availability series has been run for any of them.

No tickets, doors at one hour, two hours long

From WT’s graduation page, read on 20 September 2026: “Are tickets required for the commencement ceremony? No.” “Doors will open an hour before the ceremony. Seating is open and is on a first-come, first-served basis.” “Each ceremony is approximately no more than 2 hours.” Parking is at the arena with overflow behind the Agricultural Sciences Complex and the Virgil Henson Activities Center. The ceremony weekend logistics page has the rest.

Not claimed here

No availability count, because none was measured. No graduate count, because WT does not publish one on the pages read. No 2027 college assignment, because the calendar marks every slot to be determined. No street address for the arena, because its own page returned 404 and the graduation page gives only “Canyon, Texas” and a campus map link.

Frequently asked questions

Which hotel is closest to the First United Bank Center?

The Holiday Inn Express & Suites at 2901 4th Avenue, about a third of a mile, 66 rooms and suites per HotelGuides. The Best Western Palo Duro Canyon Inn & Suites is next door at 2801 4th Avenue with 50 rooms, and the Hampton Inn & Suites at 3101 4th Avenue has 90. All three are on the same avenue as the arena.

Will Canyon sell out?

No matched-window availability series has been run for Canyon, so this page publishes no count, and no university or hotel statement about sell-outs was found. Structurally, 206 chain rooms against four ceremonies with no ticket cap is thin, and Amarillo is the reason it does not matter much.

Which nights do we need?

Unknown until WT assigns the colleges: the calendar says "Colleges [to be determined]" for every slot. A Friday 10 am ceremony needs the Thursday night; a Saturday 2 pm ceremony needs nothing if you drive from Amarillo. Book Thursday and Friday on 4th Avenue if you want certainty, and release a night when the assignment posts.

Where is the overflow?

Amarillo, 24 minutes and 18 miles north on I-27, with the airport and a hotel base along I-40 and I-27. Hereford, 37 minutes west, and Plainview, 62 minutes south, are the other directions and rarely needed.

Do we need tickets?

No. WT's graduation page: "Are tickets required for the commencement ceremony? No." Doors open an hour before, seating is open and first come, first served. Read on 20 September 2026.

What about December?

Three ceremonies in the First United Bank Center: Friday 11 December 2026 at 2 pm and Saturday 12 December at 10 am and 2 pm, colleges to be determined, per the calendar. The ceremony weekend logistics page tracks the assignment.
