Two facts from WVU itself tell you what Morgantown's graduation weekend looks like. First, the university's own guidance confirms blackout dates at many local hotels during commencement, meaning negotiated rates stop applying and you pay whatever the market asks. Second, WVU Housing runs its own lodging program in Lincoln Hall, a campus residence hall, at $95 per room per night on double occupancy with a two-night minimum and reservations closing around 1 May. Universities do not put students' halls into service for visiting families unless the surrounding market has stopped clearing. The ring splits sharply: Fairmont at 25 minutes returned 178 properties, Pittsburgh at 82 minutes returned 3,077.

When a university opens a dorm, read it as a signal
WVU Housing runs a commencement lodging program in Lincoln Hall, a campus residence hall, and rents it to visiting families at $95 per room per night on double occupancy, with a two-night minimum.
Look at what that requires. Staff have to clean, staff, and administer a residence hall for a weekend, then hand it back. No housing office does that for the revenue. They do it because families were arriving with nowhere to sleep.
The booking details matter if you want it: reserve through WVU Conference Services online or on 304-293-2790, reservations typically stay open through 1 May, and cancellations go through by phone at least a week before check-in.
At $95 a room it is also, by a wide margin, the cheapest verified bed in this cluster.
Blackout dates are the quiet part
The second piece of evidence is less dramatic and more revealing.
WVU’s own lodging guidance for families confirms that many Morgantown hotels apply blackout dates during graduation weekend.
A blackout date is not a sold-out sign. It is a hotel saying: for these nights, no discounted or negotiated rate applies, pay what the market will bear. Hotels only set them where they are confident of filling at rack rate without help.
So the practical warning is not just that rooms are scarce. It is that any university, corporate or membership rate you were planning to use may simply switch off for the nights you need it, and the price you priced the trip against was never the price you were going to pay.
Morgantown is hemmed in by geography
The reason this compresses harder than a similarly sized town elsewhere is the terrain.
Morgantown is a river town in mountain country. There is no wide belt of suburban hotel development ringing it at fifteen or twenty minutes the way there is around a flat Midwestern campus. The road network follows the valleys, and so does the lodging.
That geography is why the ring, when you look at it, is two options at very different distances rather than a gentle gradient.
Fairmont first, Pittsburgh if you must
Fairmont, WV is 25 minutes south on I-79 and returned 178 properties on a live check for a representative graduation weekend, with no sold-out signals. It is the first place to look after Morgantown itself.
Pittsburgh, PA is 82 minutes north and returned 3,077. That is seventeen times Fairmont’s inventory, on a hotel economy that has nothing to do with WVU’s calendar. Pittsburgh will have rooms.
The trade is time. Eighty-two minutes each way on a ceremony morning, with parking and seating at the far end, makes for a long day and an early alarm. Take Fairmont if it is there. Take Pittsburgh if it is not, and add an hour to whatever departure time feels right.
What we checked, and what we could not
The Lincoln Hall rate, the two-night minimum, the phone number and the cancellation window come from WVU Housing’s own commencement lodging page. The blackout-date confirmation comes from WVU’s own family lodging guidance, and Hilton Garden Inn Morgantown is named there as a property families commonly use. Ring availability in both towns was checked live.
What we could not establish: which specific Morgantown hotels apply blackouts and on which nights, room counts or commencement cancellation terms at any named hotel, current Lincoln Hall availability for the December round, and a dollar comparison between the ring towns, because the availability tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation.

|---|---|---|---|
| Fairmont, WVCheck rooms in Fairmont, WV → | 25 min | Checked live for a representative May 14-15, 2027 weekend (Google Hotels, July 2026): 178 results, no sold-out signals. | Broad chain-hotel tier; not converted from the local currency the research tool returned (see note below). |
| Pittsburgh, PACheck rooms in Pittsburgh, PA → | 82 min | Checked live for the same weekend (Google Hotels, July 2026): 3,077 results, no sold-out signals, by far the deepest inventory of the two. | Broad hotel tier, budget to upscale; not converted from the local currency the research tool returned (see note below). |
Availability was checked live via Google Hotels for a representative weekend in July 2026; the tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation, so this reports confirmed inventory rather than a dollar comparison.

Frequently asked questions
Can I stay in a WVU dorm for graduation?
Yes. WVU Conference Services rents Lincoln Hall at $95 per room per night on double occupancy, with a two-night minimum. Book through its online system or by phone on 304-293-2790. Reservations typically stay open through 1 May, and cancellations are taken by phone at least a week before check-in.
What are the blackout dates?
WVU's own lodging guidance confirms that many Morgantown hotels apply blackout dates during graduation weekend. In practice that means any negotiated or discounted rate you were counting on stops applying for those specific nights.
When is the next ceremony?
Fall Commencement on Saturday 12 December 2026, then a spring window of 14 to 16 May 2027. WVU labels every forward date as projected and subject to change.
Fairmont or Pittsburgh?
Fairmont at 25 minutes returned 178 properties on a live check and is the sensible first move. Pittsburgh at 82 minutes returned 3,077, which is real depth but a genuine drive on a ceremony morning.
Is the two-night minimum negotiable at Lincoln Hall?
Not that we could establish. It is published as a minimum, so budget for two nights if you take the dorm option rather than assuming a single night will be accepted.
