WVU publishes its commencement dates further ahead than almost any university on this site, and labels every one of them projected and subject to change. That honesty is worth respecting rather than ignoring. The next round is Fall Commencement on Saturday 12 December 2026, four months out and worth booking against now, and it is at the WVU Hope Coliseum. Spring 2027 is not a date but a three-day window, Friday 14 to Sunday 16 May, inside which individual college ceremonies will eventually be scheduled, and WVU has published no spring venue. If yours is the spring round, book flexible nights across the window rather than committing to one day, because the day you commit to may not be the day you end up attending. No tickets are required for any WVU ceremony, doors open an hour before, and a clear bag policy with weapons detection applies at the Coliseum.

A university that admits its dates might move

WVU does something on its own future dates page that deserves more credit than it gets: it publishes commencement dates years ahead, and then labels every single one projected and subject to change.

Most universities dodge this by publishing nothing beyond the next round. WVU gives you the planning horizon and tells you honestly how much weight it will bear.

We have carried that label through to this page rather than presenting the dates as settled, because the difference matters when you are deciding whether to book a refundable rate or a cheaper non-refundable one.

December is a date. May is a window.

The two upcoming rounds are not the same kind of thing, and treating them the same is how families get this wrong.

Fall Commencement is Saturday 12 December 2026. A single day, four months out at the time of writing, and the round you can genuinely plan around.

Spring 2027 runs Friday 14 May to Sunday 16 May. That is a window, not a ceremony. WVU schedules individual college ceremonies inside it, and which college lands on which day had not been published when we checked.

So if you are booking for spring, you are booking against a range. The sensible response is refundable nights spanning the window, trimmed once the college schedule is released, rather than a confident guess at the Saturday.

Two ceremonies, two different lodging problems

The December round and the May round face very different markets, which is worth spelling out because this cluster’s lodging evidence mostly concerns spring.

December is a single Saturday. Most families need one night, the Friday, and the blackout-date pressure documented on the lodging side of this cluster is at its worst for the spring weekend rather than a December one.

May is three days of ceremonies in a mountain town whose housing office runs a residence hall as overflow accommodation. That is the round where Lincoln Hall at $95 a night, with its two-night minimum, starts to look less like a curiosity and more like the plan.

December’s venue is published. Spring’s is not.

December ceremonies are at the WVU Hope Coliseum. WVU states it outright on its December commencement page. The spring venue is a different matter and is not published.

Spring is a different matter, and the distinction is deliberate. WVU publishes no venue for the 14 to 16 May 2027 window. We are not carrying the Coliseum across to it: WVU uses more than one venue over a spring window, and assuming December’s building would risk sending a family to the wrong place on the one morning it matters.

So: for December, the Hope Coliseum. For May, check WVU’s own graduation site once your college’s ceremony is scheduled, and treat any venue quoted elsewhere for 2027 with suspicion until then.

Getting in: doors, bags and the detection gates

WVU publishes this as general policy rather than per round, and it is stricter than most.

  • No tickets. WVU states plainly that tickets are not required. Seating is first come, first served, and seats cannot be reserved or held ahead of time.
  • Doors open one hour before the ceremony start time, and guests may enter through any of the gates at the Coliseum.
  • A clear bag policy applies, and has done to every commencement since December 2019. You may bring a one-gallon clear freezer bag, a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, and a small clutch about the size of a hand, 4.5 by 6.5 inches, in addition to a clear bag.
  • Weapons detection devices are in use. WVU cites an exemption under the West Virginia Campus Self-Defense Act. Guests with prohibited bags, or outside food and drink, cannot enter.
  • Prohibited: purses larger than a clutch, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, luggage, computer bags, camera bags, and seat cushions or chair backs larger than 16 inches with pockets, zippers, compartments or covers.
  • No signs or banners inside the Coliseum, so that nobody’s view is blocked.
  • Shuttles run from the parking lots to the ceremony location, and University Police and Parking staff direct guests on arrival.

For guests who need accessible seating, Guest Services tables sit at the Gold and Blue Gates before, during and after each ceremony, and volunteers there will direct you. Accessible parking is available with a placard visible on entry.

What we checked, and what we could not

The December date, the May window and the projected label all come from WVU’s own future dates page. Saturday 12 December 2026 was cross-checked against the calendar, as were the Friday and Sunday bounds of the May window. The Lincoln Hall rate and minimum come from WVU Housing.

Three things families usually have to chase are published here. The December venue is one, and it is the Hope Coliseum. Tickets are not required, which WVU states on its families-and-guests page. Parking is published, including shuttles from the lots and accessible parking arrangements.

Still unestablished, and each is a real absence: ceremony times, which WVU says will come with a detailed schedule released early in the Fall 2026 semester; which college graduates on which spring day, the assignment that actually determines your nights; and any spring venue. Those are the things to watch for.

Frequently asked questions

When is WVU's next commencement?

Fall Commencement on Saturday 12 December 2026. The weekday checks out against the calendar. WVU lists it as projected and subject to change, like all its forward dates.

What about spring 2027?

A window of Friday 14 May to Sunday 16 May 2027. Individual college ceremonies are scheduled inside it, and those assignments were not published at this check.

Why does WVU call its dates projected?

Because it publishes them years ahead, before venues and college schedules are locked. Most universities avoid the problem by not publishing that far out at all. Treat WVU's dates as a strong planning signal rather than a booked fact.

Where are the ceremonies held?

Venues for these rounds had not been published when we checked. WVU uses more than one venue across a spring window, so this page does not name one.

Which round should I be planning for?

If December, book now: it is four months out and it is a single Saturday. If May 2027, you are planning against a window rather than a date, so flexibility is worth more than precision.
