Three hotels, already gone, ten months early
Most pages on this site describe pressure. This one describes a result.
When we checked in July 2026, three of Madison’s best-known near-campus hotels were already fully booked or waitlisted for 2027 Commencement Weekend:
- Wisconsin Union Hotel, on campus, confirmed fully booked on its own page
- Concourse Hotel
- The Edgewater
Ten months ahead. Not “filling fast” on a booking widget, but three named properties with no rooms, verified against their own sites.
The Edgewater explains why
The mechanism is not mysterious once one of the hotels tells you how it works.
The Edgewater’s own published timeline shows it opens commencement inventory thirteen months in advance.
Set that against how most families behave and the outcome is arithmetic rather than bad luck. A family that starts thinking about a May ceremony the previous autumn is arriving four or five months after the doors opened. By then the rooms are not expensive, they are gone.
There is a second constraint at the Union worth knowing: even when it has rooms, it caps parties at two rooms maximum. For a large family travelling together, that limit can matter more than availability.
December comes first, and it is not the weekend those bookings are for
Worth separating the two rounds, because the sellout evidence above concerns spring.
Winter Commencement is 10:00 a.m. on Sunday 13 December 2026, at the Kohl Center. Indoors, single ceremony, four months out.
Spring runs 7 and 8 May 2027. That is the round the three hotels are already booked for.
If your ceremony is December, you are in a materially better position than the spring evidence on this page suggests. If it is May, the position is the one described above, and the honest advice is to look outward now rather than keep refreshing near-campus pages.
A ten o’clock Sunday in December
The winter ceremony’s timing is worth a sentence of its own. A 10:00 a.m. Sunday start means arriving the night before for anyone not already in Madison, because a December morning drive across southern Wisconsin is not something to attempt on a tight schedule.
That pushes demand onto the Saturday night specifically, which is the night to book rather than the Sunday.
Close and thin, or far and deep
Madison’s ring splits cleanly into two kinds of option.
Sun Prairie at 22 minutes returned 442 properties, and DeForest at 27 minutes returned 463. Close, ordinary suburban inventory, and the sensible first move.
Wisconsin Dells at 60 minutes returned 1,071 and Baraboo at 56 minutes 1,026. Both are tourism markets with hotel bases built for the Dells’ own visitor season rather than for a university, which is exactly why they still have rooms when Madison does not.
Janesville at 49 minutes returned 194 and is the weakest of the five.
For a 10:00 a.m. Sunday ceremony, an hour’s drive from the Dells is a genuine early start in December. Sun Prairie is the better trade if it is available.
What we checked, and what we could not
The Union’s booked status and the two-room cap come from its own page, confirmed in July 2026. The Edgewater’s thirteen-month timeline is its own published figure. The December date, time and venue come from UW-Madison’s own commencement site, with the weekday verified as a Sunday.
What we could not establish: current 2027 waitlist positions at any of the three, published rates for commencement weekend, and a dollar comparison for the ring towns, because the availability tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation.
