Book the nights either side of Monday, August 31, 2026, and book them for move-in rather than for a seat: Amherst says Convocation is intended for faculty and first-year students, and that families watch by live stream. The ceremony is at 7:30 p.m. in Johnson Chapel.

Who gets a seat
Amherst College states who Convocation is for, in its own words: it “is intended for faculty and first-year students.” Returning students, staff, alumni, families and community members are “invited to watch via live stream.” A video recording and a transcript follow afterwards.
That is worth reading twice before booking, because it inverts the usual reason to be in town for a college ceremony. If the plan was to sit in Johnson Chapel at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 31, the college’s own page is saying that seat is not on offer.
Why the rooms go before the ceremony does
Convocation is traditionally held on the evening before classes begin. So the week’s real lodging demand is not the ceremony, it is the move-in days stacked in front of it: a first-year student arriving, a car unloaded, a family staying a night or two either side.
Book for that, and Convocation becomes something you watch from the room on the last evening rather than the thing you travelled for.
Where to look, in order
Hotel UMass sits at 1 Campus Center Way on the neighbouring UMass Amherst campus, roughly 112 rooms, and is the closest hotel to both downtown Amherst and Amherst College’s own campus. No convocation-specific minimum stay or cancellation rule was confirmed for the property.
Past that, Northampton is about 20 minutes away and Springfield about 30. Northampton is a college town in its own right, so it is a change of address rather than a reliable escape from a busy week. Springfield is the Pioneer Valley’s largest city and its hotel economy does not follow any single college’s calendar.
The map and booking links on this page are set to the nights either side of August 31, 2026. If your move-in slot is earlier in the week, change the dates before you search.
What we could not establish
Amherst has not published any lodging, room-block or room-release policy tied to Convocation, so there is no booking deadline to give you here.
Whether families can attend in person under any circumstance is not stated beyond the live-stream sentence quoted above. The college is the only authority on that and it is a short email to ask.
We also did not obtain a live per-night availability count for Amherst, Northampton or Springfield in this pass. The search tool used for that check on other clusters failed to load its results page repeatedly, so the ring below is described by structure and drive time, not by a count we watched.
Finally, UMass Amherst runs its own move-in on its own calendar next door, and a clash would tighten every room in this table. We did not read UMass’s calendar at source this session, so we are not claiming one either way.

Frequently asked questions
When is Amherst College Convocation 2026?
Monday, August 31, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. in Johnson Chapel, per Amherst College's own Convocation page.
Can parents attend Convocation in person?
Amherst's own wording is that Convocation "is intended for faculty and first-year students", and that returning students, staff, alumni, families and community members are "invited to watch via live stream". The college also publishes a recording and a transcript afterwards. Treat an in-person seat as something to confirm with the college, not to assume.
Then why would a family book a room that week at all?
Because Convocation is traditionally held on the evening before classes begin, so it sits at the end of the move-in period. The lodging pressure belongs to the days before the ceremony, which is when a first-year student is actually being moved in.
What happens inside the ceremony?
A formal procession, President Elliott and the faculty in academic regalia formally welcoming the first-year class, honorary Amherst College degrees for some recently promoted professors, and performances by the Amherst College Glee Club.
Which hotel is closest to campus?
Hotel UMass, on the neighbouring UMass Amherst campus at 1 Campus Center Way, roughly 112 rooms. Northampton is about 20 minutes out and Springfield about 30.
