Two real options for ASU's Monday, May 10, 2027 commencement. Mesa, AZ — about 11 minutes east — had 3,658 live results with no sold-out signals as of a July 2026 check. Scottsdale, AZ, about 13 minutes northeast, had 11,112 results — the deepest inventory anywhere in this project, thanks to its resort-market hotel base.

Two real Phoenix-metro cities, not overflow suburbs

ASU’s only genuinely on-campus hotel has just 330 rooms — a structural mismatch with one of the largest graduating classes in the country. Once that’s full, the next real options are Mesa and Scottsdale, both separate, well-established Arizona cities with their own large hotel economies, not clusters of highway hotels riding on ASU’s calendar.

What we actually checked

Live availability via Google Hotels for a representative May 9-10, 2027 commencement weekend, checked in July 2026: Mesa — 3,658 results, no sold-out signals. Scottsdale — 11,112 results, no sold-out signals, the deepest inventory of any location documented anywhere in this project. We couldn’t convert either tool’s prices out of the non-US currency it returned by IP geolocation, so we’re reporting confirmed inventory rather than a dollar figure we can’t stand behind.

Why Scottsdale is the deeper bet

Scottsdale is a major resort and convention destination with a hotel base built for tourism and business travel year-round — its depth has nothing to do with ASU’s calendar. If Mesa tightens up, Scottsdale’s much larger inventory is the more reliable fallback, even at the slightly longer drive.

Frequently asked questions

What's the closest fallback if ASU's on-campus hotel is full?

Mesa, Arizona, about 11 minutes east — a separate, large East Valley city with its own hotel market, not a Tempe overflow suburb.

Is Mesa likely to be tight too?

We checked live via Google Hotels for a representative May 9-10, 2027 weekend and found 3,658 results with no sold-out signals, as of July 2026.

What about Scottsdale?

About 13 minutes northeast — a well-known Arizona resort city with 11,112 results in the same live check, the deepest inventory of any location in this entire project.

Why is Scottsdale's inventory so much deeper than other fallback towns?

Scottsdale is a major resort and convention destination in its own right, with a hotel base built for tourism and business travel year-round — not one shaped by ASU's calendar at all.
