Dartmouth's Commencement is Sunday, June 13, 2027, held outdoors on the Green. The Hanover Inn, the only hotel on campus, is reserved for Trustees, honorary degree recipients, and the 50-year reunion class — it's not bookable by graduating families at all. Six South St. Hotel, two blocks from the Green, is the closest real option, and its own site says return guests get booking priority during commencement season. Dartmouth's own advice: off-campus lodging sells out about a year in advance.

The on-campus hotel isn’t in play

Most campuses in this project have an on-campus or adjacent hotel that’s simply hard to book — full rates, deposits, tight cancellation windows. Dartmouth is different: the Hanover Inn, sitting right on the Green, isn’t for sale to graduating families during commencement weekend at all. The college’s own lodging page is direct about it — the Inn “is reserved for Trustees, honorary degree recipients, and the 50-year reunion class.” There’s no waitlist angle or early-booking trick here; it’s simply not the hotel you’re trying to get into.

The real closest option

Six South St. Hotel sits about two blocks from the Green, and its marketing is refreshingly honest about what commencement season does to its availability: “Return guests are rewarded with priority booking,” and the more times you’ve stayed, “the better your chances of securing a guest room for important milestones.” Translation — if this is your first Dartmouth graduation and you’re booking cold, you’re behind families who’ve stayed here for parents’ weekends and reunions in past years. We didn’t find a published minimum-stay or deposit policy specific to commencement; call ahead and confirm terms directly.

The other on-campus option: a dorm room

Dartmouth runs its own Commencement guest housing program, renting out standard residence hall rooms to visiting families — twin beds, shared bathrooms in most cases, linens provided. It’s not a hotel substitute, but it’s real, bookable inventory that most campuses in this project don’t offer. The most recently published rate was $70 per person, per night; the application window for 2027 hasn’t opened yet, but in the most recent cycle it closed by early April. Call the Commencement and Reunion Housing Office at 603-646-3288 for current-cycle timing.

  • Hanover Inn Dartmouth (on-campus): Dartmouth's own hotel, on the Green. Not an option for graduating families: the college's own commencement lodging page states it "is reserved for Trustees, honorary degree recipients, and the 50-year reunion class." Listed here for completeness, not as something to try booking.
  • Six South St. Hotel: A boutique hotel two blocks from the Green — the closest real option actually in Hanover. Its own site is candid about demand: "Return guests are rewarded with priority booking at Six South St during the busy commencement season," and "the more you visit, the better your chances of securing a guest room." No published minimum-stay or deposit policy specific to commencement as of this check.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book the Hanover Inn for graduation weekend?

No. Dartmouth's own commencement lodging page states the Hanover Inn "is reserved for Trustees, honorary degree recipients, and the 50-year reunion class." It's not a matter of booking early enough — graduating families aren't the audience for it during commencement weekend at all.

What's the closest hotel a family can actually book?

Six South St. Hotel, about two blocks from the Green. Its own site is unusually direct about demand during commencement season, saying return guests get priority booking and that repeat visits improve your odds of getting a room for "important milestones."

Is there an on-campus option besides the Hanover Inn?

Yes — Dartmouth runs a Commencement guest housing program in its own residence halls. Rooms are standard dorm rooms (twin beds, most without private bathrooms) rather than a hotel experience, but they're real, bookable, and priced separately from any hotel. See the details below.

When should I book?

As close to a year out as you can manage. Dartmouth's own commencement office tells families that off-campus lodging "begin[s] taking reservations one year in advance and sell[s] out quickly" — that's the university itself setting the expectation, not us guessing.
