BGSU's next commencement runs Friday 11 and Saturday 12 December 2026 at the Stroh Center, and the two days are split by degree rather than being two halves of one event. The registrar lists the Friday as "Doctoral, Masters, and Undergraduate Commencement" and the Saturday as "Undergraduate Commencement", so SOME UNDERGRADUATES GRADUATE ON THE FRIDAY. Establish which before booking anything, because Bowling Green has five hotels. No December ceremony time has been published. For its summer round BGSU required no guest tickets, seated guests from one hour before, ran each ceremony about two hours and provided free parking with no permit.

Some undergraduates graduate on the Friday

The most useful thing on this page is a distinction BGSU publishes and almost nobody reads.

From the registrar’s Fall 2026 calendar, verbatim:

Dec. 11 Doctoral, Masters, and Undergraduate Commencement Dec. 12 Undergraduate Commencement

Two days, split by degree, and undergraduate appears on both. This is not a Friday rehearsal and a Saturday main event. If you book the Saturday because graduations happen on Saturdays, you may be a day late for your own graduate.

In a town with five hotels, that mistake has no cheap correction.

Ask your graduate which ceremony they are assigned to before you book anything. The where to stay page covers why the margin for error is so thin.

One more thing from the same calendar: final exams run 7 to 11 December, ending on the first ceremony day. Students are sitting papers while the earliest families are arriving.

What has not been published for December

Being direct about this, because the gap is wider than usual.

BGSU has published the dates and nothing else for December. No ceremony times, no doors time, no ticket policy, no venue named per round.

Its Commencement Ceremony Information page is detailed and current, but it opens by saying the details “apply to candidates participating in our summer ceremonies”, and BGSU had not rolled it over when we checked.

So everything in the next section is last round’s arrangement, given because it is the best available guide to how BGSU runs a ceremony, and labelled so you do not mistake it for December’s.

How BGSU ran the summer round

Guest tickets were not required. BGSU’s wording: “Guest tickets are not required for entry to the summer ceremonies. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.” Guests could be seated from one hour before.

That combination has a consequence. No tickets means no cap on how many people come, and first-come seating means the good seats belong to whoever arrives when the doors open. If December repeats it, arriving early is the whole strategy.

Each ceremony ran about two hours, and BGSU asked guests to stay to the end rather than leaving once their own graduate had crossed.

Parking was free and needed no permit, in the lots around the Stroh Center, with staff and police directing. Handicap parking sat in the nearest lots and required a state-issued placard or plate. Golf carts ran for anyone with accessibility needs, with designated pick-up points.

Accessibility is handled through Accessibility Services in advance, and an ASL interpreter appears on all video screens and broadcasts, which is unusually thorough.

Everything is livestreamed on BGSU’s YouTube channel and the Commencement site, so relatives who cannot travel are properly covered.

The summer structure, for shape rather than as a December promise: Doctoral Hooding and Graduate College at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Undergraduate at 9 a.m. Saturday, both at the Stroh Center.

Two things your graduate has to do

Worth passing on, because families often assume attendance is automatic.

The RSVP. BGSU requires every graduate who wants to attend to complete an online RSVP, sent to their BGSU email with a window of about a month. No RSVP, no ceremony.

The 45-minute arrival. Graduates must arrive no later than 45 minutes before, entering through a specific door, to collect the announcer card that carries their name for the stage reading. Late arrivals may not be seated with their college.

There is also a separate, earlier deadline for an approved graduation application. Miss it and a graduate can still walk and receive their diploma cover, but BGSU cannot guarantee their name in the printed programme or on the screen as they cross.

Absent rather than estimated

Not published at the time of writing: December ceremony times, doors time, December ticket policy, December parking arrangements, and any venue named for the December round specifically. The Stroh Center is BGSU’s standing commencement venue and is carried at that standing.

Nothing from the summer round has been silently carried across. Where this page describes summer, it says so.

One aside that says something about BGSU’s default: the summer 2026 ceremonies were moved indoors to the Stroh Center for weather, which means summer normally runs outdoors. December will be indoors regardless.

Frequently asked questions

Which day is my graduate's ceremony?

It depends on the degree, and the split is published. BGSU's Fall 2026 registrar calendar lists Friday 11 December as "Doctoral, Masters, and Undergraduate Commencement" and Saturday 12 December as "Undergraduate Commencement". So doctoral and masters candidates are certainly on the Friday, and some undergraduates are too. Ask your graduate rather than assuming the Saturday.

What time do the ceremonies start?

Not published for December at the time of writing. For guidance only, BGSU's summer 2026 round ran the Doctoral Hooding and Graduate College ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on the Friday and the Undergraduate ceremony at 9 a.m. on the Saturday. That is last round's schedule, not December's, and this page will not print it as though it were confirmed.

Do guests need tickets?

For summer 2026 BGSU stated: "Guest tickets are not required for entry to the summer ceremonies. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis." Guests could be seated from one hour before. December's arrangements had not been published when we checked. If the pattern holds, arriving early is what secures seats together, since nothing is reserved.

How long does it last?

Each ceremony ran approximately two hours in summer, and BGSU asked that guests stay until the conclusion out of respect for graduates whose names come later in the alphabet.

Where do we park?

In summer, free parking with no permit required in the lots surrounding the Stroh Center, with parking staff and police directing traffic. Handicap parking was in the nearest lots and required a state-issued disability placard or plate. Golf-cart transport ran for anyone with accessibility needs.

Can relatives who cannot travel watch?

Yes. BGSU livestreams all ceremonies on its YouTube channel and through the Commencement website, and an American Sign Language interpreter appears on all video screens and broadcasts.

Does my graduate have to do anything beforehand?

Yes, and it is easy to miss. BGSU requires graduates to complete an online RSVP to attend, sent to their BGSU email with a fixed window, and to arrive no later than 45 minutes before the ceremony to collect an announcer card. There is also a separate deadline for an approved graduation application if their name is to appear in the printed programme and on screen.
