BYU's commencement is Thursday 22 April 2027 at 10 a.m. in the Marriott Center, ending around 11:30. Two things decide your trip. First, THE NAME IS READ AT CONVOCATION, not at commencement: BYU's registrar says each college holds its own convocation where a graduate "walks" and receives a diploma cover, and convocations run across commencement day and the following day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. across five venues. Second, GUESTS ARE CAPPED AT THREE per graduate, all ticketed, and BYU warns that a ticket does not guarantee entry once the arena is full. The Marriott Center also runs a NO BAG policy. Assume two nights and confirm your college's convocation slot early.

The name is read at the other ceremony
This is the thing to get right before booking anything, and BYU states it plainly on its registrar site.
Commencement is the university-wide event: Thursday 22 April 2027, 10 a.m., Marriott Center, ending by about 11:30. The president conducts it, an invited speaker addresses the class, honorary degrees are conferred.
Convocation is your college’s own ceremony. In BYU’s words, it is where “your name is read and you ‘walk’ up to be recognized and receive a diploma cover.” It runs about one to two hours and the dean presides.
If a grandparent has flown to Utah to hear a name called, the convocation is the ceremony they came for, and it is not the one on the front page.
Two days, not one morning
Convocations do not all sit neatly after commencement. BYU spreads them across commencement day and the following day, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., across five venues: the Marriott Center, the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom, the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium, the Music Building Concert Hall and the Hinckley Center Assembly Hall.
So the trip depends entirely on where your college lands:
- A morning convocation on commencement day and you might get away with one night.
- A 7 p.m. slot on commencement day and you are staying that night.
- A next-day convocation and you need the Thursday night whatever else happens.
BYU had not published 2027 convocation times when we checked, so this page does not date them. What it will say is that two nights is the safe assumption, and that confirming your college’s slot is the single most useful thing your graduate can find out.
Three tickets, and a ticket is not a seat
BYU’s guest policy is among the tightest on this site, and it has an unusual second half.
Each graduate may request up to three tickets. All guests need one. The portal opens roughly three weeks before commencement and closes about five days before, and missing it is not something the page offers a remedy for.
Three is the number to plan the whole trip around. Two parents and one sibling and you are full. Grandparents make it a problem you have to solve before anyone books a flight.
Then the part most people would never expect:
“A ticket does not guarantee entry once the venue is full.”
Seating is general admission despite being ticketed. Guests are asked to be seated by 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. start, and standby entry begins after 9:30 based on whatever capacity is left. So a ticket gets you into the queue, not into a seat, and arriving at 9:25 with three tickets is a worse position than arriving at 8:45.
Graduates have their own timetable: report to the Bean Museum parking lot at 8:45 a.m., processional at 9:05.
The no-bag policy
The Marriott Center runs a NO BAG policy for commencement, not a clear-bag policy. The only general exception is a small clutch, roughly hand-sized. Medically necessary items and diaper bags are permitted after inspection, which is more generous than Baylor, where diaper bags are banned outright.
Weapons detection systems are in use at entry, so build in queue time on top of the 9:30 seating deadline.
If you are outside the three
BYU broadcasts commencement live on BYUtv, BYU Radio, Classical 89 KBYU-FM and byutv.org, and streams it through the BYUtv app.
Given a three-ticket cap against a class of nearly 6,900 graduates, that broadcast is not a consolation prize, it is the plan for most extended families.
Absent rather than estimated
BYU’s registrar commencement page still describes April 2026 in full and had not been rolled over at the time of writing. Everything above about tickets, bags, timings and broadcast is BYU’s standing arrangement as published for 2026, and is labelled that way rather than presented as confirmed for 2027. Expect the ticket portal dates in particular to move.
Not published for 2027: convocation dates and times, the ticket portal window, the commencement speaker, and any parking arrangement.
One oddity worth flagging in BYU’s own calendar: it lists commencement for 2027, 2029 and 2030 and skips 2028 entirely. That is a gap in BYU’s publication, not an inference we are willing to fill.
For where to sleep against a two-day event, see where to stay. If you are looking at Provo this autumn, Homecoming runs 6 to 10 October with a Friday night kickoff.

Frequently asked questions
How many guests can we bring?
Three. BYU states that all guests must have a ticket and that each graduate may request up to three tickets, through a portal that opens roughly three weeks before and closes about five days before. That is one of the tightest caps of any university covered here, and it means a party of four adults plus the graduate is already over.
Does a ticket guarantee a seat?
No, and BYU says so directly: "A ticket does not guarantee entry once the venue is full." Seating is general admission despite being ticketed, guests should be seated by 9:30 a.m., and standby entry begins after 9:30 based on remaining capacity. So arrive early even with tickets in hand.
Which ceremony actually matters?
Both, for different reasons. Commencement is the university-wide event at 10 a.m. in the Marriott Center. Convocation is where your college reads the graduate's name and hands over the diploma cover, and it lasts about one to two hours. If you can only attend one, the convocation is the one with your graduate's name in it.
When are the convocations?
Across commencement day and the day after, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., spread over the Marriott Center, the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom, the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium, the Music Building Concert Hall and the Hinckley Center Assembly Hall. BYU had not published 2027 convocation times when we checked, so this page does not date them. A 7 p.m. slot or a next-day slot both mean a second night.
What can we take into the Marriott Center?
Very little. There is a NO BAG policy, with an exception for a small clutch roughly the size of a hand. Medically necessary items and diaper bags are permitted after inspection. Weapons detection systems are in use, so allow time at the door.
Do some convocations need their own tickets?
Yes. BYU says family and friends are welcome at convocations although some require tickets, and in the published schedule the Honors and Law convocations were both marked as ticketed. Ask your graduate's college rather than assuming open entry.
Can relatives who cannot travel watch?
Commencement is broadcast live on BYUtv, BYU Radio, Classical 89 KBYU-FM and byutv.org, and streams on the BYUtv app. That is a real answer for the relatives who fall outside the three-ticket allocation.
