BYU Homecoming runs Tuesday 6 to Saturday 10 October 2026, and the football game is the unusual part: BYU hosts Iowa State on FRIDAY 9 OCTOBER at 8:15 p.m. MDT on ESPN, not on the Saturday. A game kicking off at quarter past eight finishes near midnight, so the FRIDAY night is the one to book and nobody is driving back to Salt Lake afterwards. The week opens with the Opening Ceremony at the Marriott Center at 11 a.m. on the Tuesday and the Hike and Light the Y on Y Mountain at 5 p.m. Provo has 13 bookable properties and Orem 17 ten minutes away.

The game is on Friday, and it starts at quarter past eight
Almost every homecoming page on this site is about a Saturday. BYU’s is not, and that single fact should decide your booking.
Friday 9 October 2026, 8:15 p.m. MDT. BYU against Iowa State at LaVell Edwards Stadium, on ESPN.
Work the clock forward. A game kicking off at 8:15 runs to somewhere near midnight once stoppages and a television window are counted. Then thirty thousand people leave a stadium in north Provo at the same moment.
Nobody drives forty-five minutes to Salt Lake City after that. Realistically nobody drives much past Orem.
So where most homecoming weekends load the Saturday night, or the Friday because of an early Saturday start, this one loads the Friday night specifically, and it does it harder than a Saturday game would because all the demand lands on one night instead of spreading across two.
| Where | Drive | Bookable properties |
|---|---|---|
| Provo | on campus | 13 |
| Orem, UT | 10 min | 17 |
| Lehi, UT | 25 min | 19 |
| Salt Lake City, UT | 46 min | 260 |
Orem is the deeper of the two close options and it is ten minutes out. Salt Lake has the volume, and a midnight finish is exactly the wrong time to need it.
The week starts on a mountainside
Homecoming opens on Tuesday 6 October:
- 11 a.m., Opening Ceremony at the Marriott Center, with performances from campus groups.
- 5 p.m., Hike and Light the Y on Y Mountain.
The second of those is the one visitors travel for. The Y on the mountain above campus is lit for homecoming, and the hike up to it is part of the tradition rather than a spectator event. It is a steep trail rather than a walk, so bring proper footwear and expect it to take longer than the map suggests.
Between Tuesday and Friday the programme runs alumni events, an Alumni Achievement Award presentation and college activities. BYU publishes those through a day-by-day schedule on its homecoming site; individual times beyond the two above are not reproduced here, because this page does not restate times it has not read directly at source.
The fixture worth knowing about
If you are choosing a weekend on the strength of the opponent rather than the homecoming programme, look one week later.
BYU hosts Notre Dame at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday 17 October, kickoff still TBA. That is the marquee home fixture of BYU’s season and it will be a harder booking than homecoming, in a market with 13 properties in town.
The rest of the home slate: Utah Tech on 5 September at 6 p.m., Arizona on 12 September at 1:30 p.m. on FOX, Arizona State on 31 October, Baylor on 14 November and Cincinnati on 28 November, all TBA.
What is not established
Kickoff-adjacent parking and road closures for LaVell Edwards Stadium were not verified here; BYU Athletics operates game-day parking under its own rules, separate from anything the university publishes for commencement.
Ticket prices for the Iowa State game were not recorded, since BYU sells them through its athletics ticketing and they move. Individual homecoming event times beyond the Opening Ceremony and Light the Y were not reproduced, because BYU distributes them through a tabbed daily schedule rather than a single published list.
No named Provo or Orem hotel was confirmed sold out for the weekend. The property counts are total bookable supply on the date checked, not a sellout claim.
Planning for graduation instead? BYU’s commencement is Thursday 22 April 2027, and the where to stay page explains why it is a two-day trip rather than a morning.

Frequently asked questions
When is BYU Homecoming 2026?
Tuesday 6 October to Saturday 10 October 2026. It opens with the Opening Ceremony at the Marriott Center at 11 a.m. on the Tuesday, followed by the Hike and Light the Y on Y Mountain at 5 p.m. that evening.
When is the football game?
Friday 9 October at 8:15 p.m. MDT, BYU against Iowa State at LaVell Edwards Stadium, televised on ESPN. It is a Friday night game rather than the usual Saturday afternoon, which is the single most important thing on this page for anyone booking rooms.
Which night do I book?
Friday 9 October. A game that kicks off at 8:15 p.m. finishes somewhere near midnight, and nobody drives forty-five minutes back to Salt Lake City at that hour, nor much further into Utah County than Orem. If you are coming for the whole week, the Tuesday evening Light the Y also pulls people in early.
What is the Hike and Light the Y?
A BYU tradition in which the Y on the mountainside above campus is lit, with a hike up Y Mountain beforehand. It is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday 6 October. It is a genuine hike on a steep trail rather than a stroll, so footwear matters.
How tight is lodging?
Provo returned 13 bookable properties on a live check and Orem 17 ten minutes away, with Lehi at 19 and Salt Lake City at 260. A Friday night game concentrates demand on a single night, which is harder on a small market than a Saturday afternoon game spread across two.
Is there a bigger home game this season?
Arguably yes. BYU hosts Notre Dame at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday 17 October, a week after homecoming, with kickoff still TBA. If your interest is the fixture rather than the homecoming programme, that is the weekend to watch, and it will be a harder booking than this one.
