Look at Orem before Provo. A live check for the 2027 window returned 13 bookable properties in Provo and 17 in ORem ten minutes up I-15, with Lehi at 19 and Salt Lake City at 260. Book TWO NIGHTS, because BYU commencement is not a single morning: the university ceremony is Thursday 22 April at 10 a.m., and college CONVOCATIONS, which are where a graduate's name is actually read, run across that day and the next from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. One thing works in your favour on room count: BYU caps guests at THREE tickets per graduate, so your party is smaller than it would be at an unticketed university.

Orem has more hotels than Provo
The counterintuitive result first, because it changes where you start looking.

Orem is deeper than Provo and ten minutes away. Lehi is deeper still at 19, on newer stock built for the Silicon Slopes tech corridor rather than for BYU, which is exactly why it does not empty when BYU has an event.
One warning before the table. Spanish Fork has four bookable properties. Figures in the hundreds are sometimes quoted for it, and those are search-result totals for the wider region rather than hotels in the town, which makes the weakest option on the map look like the strongest. Orem and Lehi are better on every axis.
Book two nights, because the name is read on a different day
The mistake available here is not booking the wrong town, it is booking one night.
Commencement is Thursday 22 April 2027 at 10 a.m. in the Marriott Center, done by about 11:30. That is the university-wide ceremony.
Convocation is where your graduate’s name is read and where they collect the diploma cover. BYU’s colleges hold them across commencement day and the following day, anywhere from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., across five different venues on campus.
So the shape of the trip depends on a detail your graduate has to look up: a Thursday-morning convocation might be a one-night trip, a 7 p.m. Thursday slot certainly is not, and a Friday convocation means you are there until Friday evening.

The ticket cap is the one thing on your side
BYU limits each graduate to three guest tickets. Every guest needs one.
On this site that is unusually strict, and for the clusters with no cap at all, Ball State and Baylor among them, an uncapped guest list is precisely what makes the room maths brutal. Here it works the other way: your party is structurally small. Most BYU families are booking one or two rooms, not four.
It does not remove the pressure entirely. Nearly 6,900 degrees were conferred in BYU’s 2026 ceremony, so even at three guests each the ceiling is around 20,000 people arriving in Utah County on the same Thursday.
And there is a sting in the ticket rule worth knowing before you choose a hotel: a ticket does not guarantee entry once the arena is full, guests should be seated by 9:30 a.m., and standby entry starts after that. Staying 45 minutes away in Salt Lake City and leaving at 8:30 is a worse plan than it looks.
Where that leaves the choice
Orem if you want the best odds at close range. Lehi if Orem is gone and you do not mind 25 minutes. Salt Lake City if you are flying in, renting a car and want the deepest market and the airport, accepting a 45-minute drive against a hard seating deadline.
Provo itself for the properties within walking distance of campus, which is worth more here than the raw count suggests, because BYU does not publish commencement parking arrangements and the Marriott Center sits on a campus with a weapons-detection queue at the door.
What is not established
No named Provo or Orem hotel was confirmed sold out for the 2027 window, and no commencement rate, minimum stay or cancellation policy was verified at any property, including the Provo Marriott. Rates were not recorded, since a rate captured eight months out says little.
BYU’s registrar commencement page still describes April 2026 and had not rolled over when we checked, so the ticket portal dates and any parking guidance should be re-read closer to the time.

Frequently asked questions
Should I stay in Provo or Orem?
Check Orem first. It returned 17 bookable properties against Provo's 13 on the same live check and it is about ten minutes up I-15, so it is deeper and barely further. Provo's advantage is walking distance to campus for the few properties that have it, which matters more here than usual because parking at the Marriott Center is not something BYU publishes for commencement.
How many nights do I need?
Two, unless you know your college's convocation is early on commencement day. Commencement is Thursday morning, and convocations run across Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. A late Thursday slot or any Friday slot means the Thursday night is not optional.
Does the three-ticket cap change my booking?
Yes, and helpfully. BYU allows each graduate up to three guest tickets, so the travelling party is structurally smaller than at the universities on this site with no cap at all. Most families here are booking one or two rooms rather than four.
What about Salt Lake City?
