Two real options outside campus for IU's May 7-8, 2027 commencement weekend. Nashville, Indiana (Brown County) is 25 minutes away and built around genuine inns and B&Bs, not chain hotels — 647 results with no sold-out signals as of a live July 2026 check. Columbus, Indiana is 50 minutes out with deeper mainstream chain inventory — 146 results, also no sold-out signals. Both get tighter the closer you get to May.

The ring here is actually a nice place to stay

Most campuses in this project have a ring town that’s purely functional — a highway exit with a Hampton Inn, nothing more. Bloomington, IN’s isn’t. Nashville, Indiana is the Brown County seat, a small historic town about 25 minutes east on IN-46 that’s built its whole identity around art galleries, inns, and a genuine town square anchored by a 19th-century courthouse. If you end up staying there instead of on campus, it’s not really a consolation prize.

What we actually checked

Live availability via Google Hotels for the exact May 7-9, 2027 commencement weekend, checked in July 2026: 647 results for Nashville, no sold-out signals, with properties ranging from the Artists Colony Inn & Restaurant to the Brown County Inn to smaller places like the Lil Black Bear Inn. For Columbus, IN, 30 minutes further at about 50 minutes total from campus: 146 results, also no sold-out signals, with deeper mainstream chain coverage — Holiday Inn, Fairfield by Marriott, Country Inn & Suites among them. We couldn’t convert either tool’s prices out of the non-US currency it returned by IP geolocation, so we’re reporting confirmed inventory rather than a dollar figure we can’t stand behind.

Why two ring towns instead of one

They’re genuinely different options, not just different distances. Nashville is closer and more charming but smaller and more tourist-driven — its own festival and leaf-season crowds mean availability can shift for reasons that have nothing to do with IU’s calendar. Columbus, IN is further but deeper: real chain inventory that isn’t competing with a tourism economy the same way.

Frequently asked questions

What's the closest fallback if the Biddle Hotel is full?

Nashville, Indiana — the Brown County seat, about 25 minutes from campus. It's not a highway strip of chain hotels; it's a small, genuinely historic tourist town built around inns and bed-and- breakfasts, which makes it a more interesting stay than most ring towns in this project, not just a fallback.

Is Nashville likely to sell out for graduation weekend too?

We checked live via Google Hotels for the exact May 7-9, 2027 window and found 647 results with no sold-out signals, as of July 2026 — about ten months out. Nashville also draws leaf-peeping and festival crowds at other times of year, so availability isn't guaranteed to hold as the date gets closer, but there was no scarcity signal at the time we checked.

What if Nashville is full too?

Columbus, Indiana, about 50 minutes from campus, has real depth — Holiday Inn, Fairfield by Marriott, Country Inn & Suites, and other mainstream chains, 146 results with no sold-out signals in the same check. It's a genuinely separate city, not a Bloomington, IN suburb, with its own hotel market independent of graduation weekend.

Why not Indianapolis?

We haven't independently checked Indianapolis for this cluster yet. It's roughly an hour from campus — likely the deepest inventory in the region if both Nashville and Columbus, IN are tight — but we're not going to list drive times or availability we haven't verified ourselves.
