The University of Delaware holds its 2027 commencement on Saturday 29 May at 9:15 a.m. at Delaware Stadium in Newark, with gates open at 7:00 a.m., per UD's own Commencement Schedules page, and Memorial Day is Monday 31 May, so commencement is the Saturday of the holiday weekend. Delaware Stadium is open-air and UD says ceremonies are rain or shine. UD runs a Doctoral Hooding Ceremony on Wednesday 26 May and college convocations from Wednesday 26 to Saturday 29 May, and ticketed ceremonies each carry their own guest allocation (four per graduate for commencement).

Saturday 29 May, at Delaware Stadium
The University of Delaware’s 2027 commencement is on Saturday 29 May, at Delaware Stadium on the Newark campus.
That is on UD’s own Commencement Schedules page, read on 17 October 2026. It was earlier carried from UD’s 2026-2027 academic year calendar, read on 7 August 2026. The weekday was cross-checked independently: 29 May 2027 is a Saturday, matching the calendar’s own label.
The same document carries the detail that shapes the weekend more than the ceremony does. Memorial Day 2027 is observed on Monday 31 May. Commencement is the Saturday of that three-day holiday weekend.
What the holiday overlap actually changes
Not the ceremony. The travel around it.
Newark sits on the I-95 corridor between Wilmington and Philadelphia, which is one of the busiest stretches of road in the country on an ordinary weekend and considerably worse on Memorial Day, when holiday traffic moves between the mid-Atlantic cities and the Delaware and New Jersey shores.
So two things get harder at once. Hotel demand along the corridor rises for reasons that have nothing to do with the university, and the drive in on Saturday morning competes with holiday traffic. Neither is a reason to panic, and both are reasons to book and to plan the journey earlier than a normal May graduation would need.
The start time is published
UD’s Commencement Schedules page gives 9:15 a.m. for Commencement, with gates open at 7:00 a.m. and parking lots open at 6:30 a.m. It also says commencement and convocation ceremonies are ticketed and that additional information on securing tickets will be shared soon.
Delaware Stadium is open-air. A late-May ceremony in Delaware can be hot or wet, and UD says all ceremonies are rain or shine; it has published no further weather plan for 2027, so this page does not describe one.
If you check UD’s calendar yourself, read the heading
Worth spelling out, because UD’s live academic calendar is easy to misread and the misreading points at the wrong year.
That calendar currently shows “Commencement | Sat May 23”. That line sits under the heading SPRING 2026, and it is the ceremony that has already been held. The weekday proves it: 23 May is a Saturday in 2026, and a Sunday in 2027, so “Sat May 23” cannot be a 2027 date.
The same block’s only May 29 entry is “Alumni Weekend Begins | Fri May 29”, which is again 2026.
UD’s live calendar publishes Fall 2026 and Winter 2027, and then jumps to Spring 2026 and Summer 2026. There is no Spring 2027 block on it at all, which is the whole reason this page says the 29 May 2027 date cannot currently be re-checked at source.
Rain or shine, and the stadium does not move
UD is unusually direct about this, and it changes what you pack rather than what you book.
In its own words, “all graduation ceremonies (Convocations and Commencement) are rain or shine events.” Delaware Stadium is open-air and the ceremony is not relocated for ordinary rain.
What UD does provide is a refuge rather than a relocation: in the most recent cycle the Bob Carpenter Center was opened for ticket holders who preferred to watch from indoors, with the livestream playing and access through Delaware Stadium. That is a seat out of the weather, not a seat at the ceremony.
If someone in your party cannot sit through rain for a couple of hours, plan for that specifically.
Tickets are allocated per ceremony
UD publishes a per-ceremony guest allocation rather than one number for the whole round. For 2027 its schedule page lists four guest tickets per graduate for Commencement, and between four and eight for the convocations and hooding; for example, eight for the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony and for the Lerner College of Business & Economics undergraduate convocation, six for most others. The ROTC commissioning ceremonies and some others do not require tickets. Which figure applies depends on which ceremony your graduate is in, and UD says ticket-request details will follow.
The convocations can move your arrival
The stadium ceremony has the published date. It is often not the event that decides when you need to be in Newark.
UD holds college convocations and doctoral hooding around the main commencement, and for many families those matter more, because that is where a graduate crosses a stage and is named rather than sitting in a stadium crowd.
UD’s 2027 schedule runs convocations from Wednesday 26 to Friday 28 May ahead of Saturday’s commencement, and the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony is Wednesday 26 May at 2:00 p.m. Which convocation is your graduate’s comes from their own college, and on a holiday weekend where rooms are already under pressure, knowing it early is worth more than usual.
What we checked, and what we could not
The commencement date, time, venue and the convocation span come from the University of Delaware’s own Commencement Schedules page, read on 17 October 2026. The Memorial Day observance (Monday 31 May 2027) comes from UD’s 2026-2027 academic year calendar, read on 7 August 2026, a PDF UD has since taken offline. Weekdays were cross-checked: 29 May 2027 is a Saturday and 26 May a Wednesday.
What we could not establish: how to request tickets, which UD says it will share soon, and the 2027 weather plan beyond “rain or shine”. The time and location of every individual college convocation is on UD’s schedule page, not reproduced here.

Frequently asked questions
When is UD's 2027 commencement?
Saturday 29 May 2027, at Delaware Stadium, per UD's Commencement Schedules page, read on 17 October 2026. An earlier version of this page carried the date from a 2026-2027 academic calendar PDF that UD has since taken offline; it is now confirmed at source. The weekday cross-checks.
What time does it start?
9:15 a.m., with gates open at 7:00 a.m. and parking lots open at 6:30 a.m., per UD's Commencement Schedules page. Commencement and convocations are ticketed, and commencement allows four guest tickets per graduate.
Is it really on Memorial Day weekend?
Yes. The same calendar lists Memorial Day as observed on Monday 31 May 2027, so the Saturday ceremony sits inside the three-day holiday weekend. That matters more for traffic and hotels than for the ceremony itself.
When are the college convocations?
Wednesday 26 to Saturday 29 May 2027, at various locations, per UD's Commencement Schedules page. The Doctoral Hooding Ceremony is Wednesday 26 May at 2:00 p.m. in the Bob Carpenter Center. Convocations are often where a graduate's name is read, so ask the college which one is theirs; it can move your arrival day.
What happens if it rains?
Delaware Stadium is open-air, so it is a fair question for a late-May ceremony. UD says all ceremonies are rain or shine, and has not published a 2027 weather plan beyond that, so this page does not describe one.
Where is Delaware Stadium?
On the University of Delaware campus in Newark, Delaware, directly on the I-95 corridor between Wilmington and Philadelphia.
