Iowa State's December 2026 commencement runs across two days at Hilton Coliseum, and both times are published. Graduate College is 7:00 p.m. on Friday 18 December. Undergraduate is 1:30 p.m. on Saturday 19 December. Both weekdays check out. A family attending only one is looking at a single night; a family with a graduate in each is committed to two, and a 7:00 p.m. Friday start in Iowa in late December is an argument for arriving in daylight. Spring 2027 is looser: the days run Thursday 13 to Saturday 15 May by college, but the registrar states that times and details are not finalised and subject to change.

Two ceremonies, an evening and an afternoon
Iowa State’s December round splits by degree level rather than by college, which makes it simpler to plan than most.
Graduate College graduates at 7:00 p.m. on Friday 18 December 2026. Undergraduates at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday 19 December. Both are at Hilton Coliseum on campus.
Two ceremonies, one building, consecutive days. If you are attending one, that is a single night. If you have a graduate in each, the Friday evening and Saturday afternoon slots bracket a night between them and you need two.
What a 7 p.m. Friday in Iowa in December actually means
The time is the part worth thinking about, and not because of the ceremony itself.
A 7:00 p.m. start means the ceremony ends well after dark, in central Iowa, in the third week of December. Nobody is driving back to Cedar Rapids afterwards, and even the 34 minutes to Des Moines is a different proposition at 9:00 p.m. in December than at 3:00 p.m. in May.
The practical version is that a Friday evening ceremony wants a Friday night room near campus, and the drive you are willing to do beforehand in daylight is not necessarily the drive you want afterwards.
Saturday’s 1:30 p.m. is the easier of the two by some distance. It leaves the morning for travel and the evening for getting home.
Spring is a set of days, not a schedule
Iowa State has published the spring 2027 days and been honest about what is missing.
The round runs Thursday 13 to Saturday 15 May, split by college, with Veterinary Medicine on the Friday. What the registrar’s calendar also carries is a plain disclaimer: commencement times and details are not finalised and are subject to change.
So spring is bookable at the level of a weekend and not at the level of an hour. If your ceremony is in May, hold the days now and wait for the times before locking flights.
What we checked, and what we could not
Both December times, the venue and the spring day structure come from Iowa State’s own registrar calendar. The December weekdays were verified independently against the calendar: 18 December 2026 is a Friday, 19 December a Saturday.
Not established, and deliberately not filled in: spring 2027 ceremony times, the full college-by-college spring assignment, ticket limits and parking. The registrar’s own disclaimer covers the first two, and the others were simply not published at this check.

Frequently asked questions
What are the December 2026 ceremony times?
Graduate College at 7:00 p.m. on Friday 18 December 2026, and undergraduate at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday 19 December 2026. Both are at Hilton Coliseum.
Are they in the same building?
Yes. Both December ceremonies are at Hilton Coliseum on the Iowa State campus, so families attending both do not have to move between venues.
What about spring 2027?
The days are Thursday 13 to Saturday 15 May, split by college, with Veterinary Medicine on the Friday. The registrar's calendar carries an explicit disclaimer that commencement times and details are not finalised and subject to change, so the hours are not yet bookable-against.
How many nights do I need in December?
One if you are attending a single ceremony, two if you have graduates in both. The Friday ceremony is in the evening and the Saturday one is early afternoon, which brackets a night between them.
Where is Hilton Coliseum?
On the Iowa State campus in Ames, part of the main athletics complex. It is the venue for both December ceremonies.
