The University of Iowa does not hold one commencement. It holds a series of college ceremonies across four days, Thursday 13 May to Sunday 16 May 2027, and it publishes the timetable rather than making families hunt for it.
The shape of the weekend, from Iowa’s own schedule:

That published detail is genuinely unusual. Most multi-ceremony universities covered on this site announce the span and leave the college assignment unpublished for months, which forces families to book on a guess. Iowa lets you find your own ceremony and plan against it.
Dentistry graduates three weeks after everyone else, which changes everything for them
Worth its own section, because it is the sort of thing that is easy to miss and expensive to miss.
The College of Dentistry graduates on Friday 4 June 2027 at 3pm, not during the May weekend at all.
If that is your graduate, the practical consequence is good news. You are booking an ordinary Friday in early June in Iowa City, with none of the commencement-weekend demand this cluster otherwise describes. Nothing on the lodging page about booking early applies to you in the same way.
For everyone else, the June date is simply not your event, and you should not let it stretch your sense of when the weekend runs.
Check the building
Ceremonies are spread across campus venues including Carver-Hawkeye Arena rather than concentrated in one building.
That means the session schedule gives you two things to note, not one: the time and the place. A family that has the hour right and the building wrong has the same problem as one that has the day wrong, and on a campus running several ceremonies in a single day the buildings are not interchangeable.
Iowa publishes venues alongside sessions, so both are available before you travel.
What we checked, and what we could not
Every date and time on this page comes from the University of Iowa’s own published spring 2027 session schedule, read on 7 August 2026. The weekdays were cross-checked independently against the calendar: 13 May 2027 is a Thursday, 14 May a Friday, 15 May a Saturday, 16 May a Sunday and 4 June a Friday, all matching the university’s own labels. That check exists because a date carried forward from a previous year almost always fails it, and it has caught nine wrong dates on this project.
What we could not establish: doors-open and seating times, ticket limits per graduate, and parking arrangements for the individual venues. Those had not been published at the time of this check, so they are absent here rather than inferred.
