There are plenty of rooms here — that is not the problem. Maryland's ceremonies run Sunday 23 to Wednesday 26 May 2027 with the main ceremony on Monday 24 May, so you need a Washington-area hotel on Monday and Tuesday nights, which is exactly when this market prices for government and corporate travel. Booking early here saves money rather than saving a room. The closest bed is The Hotel at the University of Maryland at 7777 Baltimore Ave, described on its own site as "directly across from the entrance to the University of Maryland" — walkable, and the first thing to go. After that the useful move is outward and away from Washington rather than toward it: Hyattsville at about ten minutes and Greenbelt at about twelve are both below College Park on rate, while central DC is the most expensive direction and adds a weekday commute into the bargain.

The problem here is price, not supply

Most pages on this site are about finding a room. This one is not, and saying so plainly is more useful than manufacturing urgency.

College Park sits inside the Washington DC metropolitan hotel market. It is enormous, and a graduation is not going to empty it. What Maryland does instead is unusual: it holds its ceremonies Sunday 23 to Wednesday 26 May 2027, with the main ceremony on Monday 24 May. So the nights you need are Monday and Tuesday — the nights this particular market fills with government and corporate travel and has no reason to discount.

Booking early here buys you a better rate, not a bed.

Closest first

The Hotel at the University of Maryland, 7777 Baltimore Ave, describes itself on its own site as “adjacent to the University of Maryland campus” and “directly across from the entrance to the University of Maryland in College Park”. That makes it the only genuinely walkable option and the first to sell. We could not confirm its room count at source and so state none, and we found no university rate advertised on its site.

Then go outward, not inward

The instinct with a DC-area trip is to move toward Washington. On this cluster that is usually the wrong direction.

Hyattsville, about ten minutes south, is the nearest alternative and prices below College Park.

Greenbelt, about twelve minutes north-east near the Beltway, is a conventional suburban chain cluster. Unremarkable in a way that works in your favour on a midweek — it has no reason to be full.

Silver Spring, about twenty minutes west, is a substantial suburban downtown with more depth and more to do in the evening, at rates comparable to College Park with a wider spread.

Washington DC itself, about thirty minutes south, is the most expensive direction and the one whose prices have nothing to do with your ceremony — conventions and government travel set them. It is the right choice if you are making a Washington trip of it. It is a costly mistake if you are not, because you also inherit a weekday commute into campus on a ceremony morning.

Two things to check before booking

The times. Unpublished when this page was written, and due to be announced in September 2026. A 9 a.m. Monday ceremony means arriving Sunday; an afternoon one may not. That is a whole night either way.

Your direction of travel at rush hour. With ceremonies Sunday through Wednesday, at least one leg runs inside Washington-area weekday traffic. The off-peak drive times on this page are a floor, not a plan.

One honest gap

This site publishes matched-window availability counts for some campuses — five equal-length searches in the same town, the ceremony window third, two controls either side. That measurement has not been run for College Park or the wider DC market. The judgement on this page rests on the published ceremony dates and the structure of the market they land in, and it is labelled as judgement rather than dressed up as a count.

A room count could NOT be confirmed on the hotel's own pages on 4 September 2026, so none is stated here rather than a figure taken second-hand. No university rate was mentioned on its site either, and no commencement-specific minimum-stay or cancellation policy was independently confirmed; book direct and ask.

Drive times are typical off-peak road times, not measured journeys, and on this cluster that caveat carries more weight than usual. The ceremonies fall Sunday to Wednesday, so at least some of your travel happens inside Washington-area weekday rush hour, which is among the worst in the country. A figure that holds on a Sunday afternoon will not hold at 8 a.m. on the Monday of the main ceremony.

Frequently asked questions

Will we struggle to find a room?

Almost certainly not, and this page will not pretend otherwise. College Park sits inside one of the largest hotel markets in the United States and no graduation is going to exhaust it. No matched-window availability series has been run here, so there is no count on this page — but the structural picture is deep supply, not scarcity.

Then what is the actual problem?

Price, and the reason is the calendar. The ceremonies fall Sunday through Wednesday, so your nights are Monday and Tuesday — the nights a Washington-area hotel fills with business and government travel. Most campuses on this site squeeze a small town on a Saturday. Maryland puts you into a huge market on its strongest nights.

What is the closest hotel?

The Hotel at the University of Maryland, 7777 Baltimore Ave. Its own site describes it as "adjacent to the University of Maryland campus" and "directly across from the entrance to the University of Maryland in College Park". We could not confirm a room count at source, so none is stated here. It also advertises no university rate that we could find.

Should we just stay in Washington?

Only if the trip is partly a Washington visit. Central DC is the most expensive direction, its rates are set by conventions and government travel rather than by anything at College Park, and you add a weekday commute into campus on a ceremony morning. If you want the city, go knowingly. If you only want the ceremony, go the other way.

Where is the value?

Hyattsville at about ten minutes and Greenbelt at about twelve, both below College Park on rate. Greenbelt in particular is an unremarkable suburban cluster near the Beltway, which is precisely what makes it useful on a busy midweek. Silver Spring at about twenty minutes has more going on in the evening and a wider range of rates.

Does traffic matter?

Yes, more than the mileage suggests. With ceremonies Sunday to Wednesday, at least one of your drives runs through Washington-area weekday rush hour. Check which direction you would be travelling at what hour before you decide a town is close enough.

When exactly is the ceremony?

Main ceremony Monday 24 May 2027, with school and college ceremonies Sunday 23 to Wednesday 26 May. Confirmed by two independent university sources that agree. Times were unpublished when this page was built and were due in September 2026.
