Most of this site’s logistics pages have to explain what a university has not published. This one gets to do the opposite.

December 2026

• Friday 7 May, 3:00 p.m. Graduate commencement and doctoral hooding

Every ceremony is at Pinnacle Bank Arena, 400 Pinnacle Arena Dr. Indoors, one venue, both rounds. All four dates were cross-checked against the calendar.

December is two afternoons. Spring is not.

The two rounds do NOT run the same pattern, and this page said they did.

December 2026 is two afternoon ceremonies, both at 3:00 p.m., a day apart. That is the friendliest shape on this cluster. A 3:00 p.m. start is reachable on a same-day drive from most of Nebraska and western Iowa, and comfortable from Omaha at 62 minutes without an early start. A family attending only one of the two December ceremonies may not need a room at all if they are within about ninety minutes.

What it does mean is that both ceremonies end in the evening in December, when it is dark by half past five and the drive home is the unpleasant part. The night most families actually want is the night OF their ceremony rather than the night before it, which is the reverse of the usual advice on this site.

May 2027 is the harder one. The Saturday carries two undergraduate sittings, at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and the 9:00 a.m. one is a genuinely early start: seated by half past eight means either sleeping in Lincoln or leaving Omaha before seven with a family group. For spring, the night before is the one to hold.

Two ceremonies, two nights

The most common booking error on this cluster comes from treating commencement as a single event.

A family with both a graduate and an undergraduate in the same weekend is attending on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. That is two ceremonies eighteen hours apart, and it needs two nights unless you live close enough to go home in between.

Nothing on the university’s schedule flags this, because from the registrar’s point of view they are separate ceremonies. From a travelling family’s point of view they are one trip with a night in the middle.

The May Saturday has two sittings

Spring 2027 adds a detail December does not have: the undergraduate ceremony runs twice on the Saturday, at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

That difference is worth chasing down before you book. A 9:00 a.m. sitting needs the Friday night. A 3:00 p.m. sitting is reachable from Omaha on the morning of, and may need no night at all for families within a couple of hours of Lincoln.

Which colleges attend which sitting was not published at this check, so it is the thing to confirm.

An indoor arena in December

Worth a sentence because it removes a variable that dominates other clusters on this site.

Pinnacle Bank Arena is an indoor arena. A Nebraska December can do whatever it likes outside and the ceremony is unaffected. What it does affect is the drive, and a 9:00 a.m. Saturday in December from Omaha is a different proposition than the same drive in May.

If your December ceremony is the Saturday morning one, the argument for sleeping in Lincoln rather than driving is stronger than the mileage suggests.

What we checked, and what we could not

All four dates, both start times for December, all three for May, and the Pinnacle Bank Arena venue come from UNL’s Office of the Registrar. The weekdays were cross-checked: 18 December 2026 is a Friday, 19 December a Saturday, 7 May 2027 a Friday and 8 May a Saturday.
