Two ceremonies at the Pan American Center: the graduate ceremony Friday, December 11 at 6:00 p.m., and the undergraduate ceremony Saturday, December 12 at a time NMSU has not yet announced. The Courtyard by Marriott on University Avenue is the closest branded property. El Paso, forty-five minutes south, is the deep market most visiting families overlook.

Friday evening, then Saturday
NMSU splits its December commencement across two days at the Pan American Center:
- Friday, December 11, 2026, 6:00 p.m. — doctoral, education specialist and master’s candidates
- Saturday, December 12, 2026 — undergraduate, at a start time NMSU has listed as to be announced
That structure matters more for booking than the ceremony times themselves. A Friday-evening event followed by a Saturday one is a two-night weekend for most families, and particularly for anyone flying into El Paso and driving up. The hotels nearest campus are being taken by people who need both nights, not one.
Forty-five minutes to a different state
Las Cruces reads as isolated on a map of New Mexico. It is not, in the way that matters here.
El Paso is about forty-five minutes south on I-10 — a full metro market with an international airport and hotel depth that Las Cruces cannot approach. Families from outside the region routinely miss it, because a state line reads as a bigger obstacle than the drive actually is.
Locally, the Courtyard by Marriott Las Cruces at NMSU on East University Avenue is the closest branded property to the Pan American Center, with a Hilton Garden Inn on Don Roser Drive and a Holiday Inn Express on South Valley Drive near the I-10 corridor. None publishes commencement-specific booking terms, and no Las Cruces property was confirmed sold out for a commencement weekend — which is why this cluster is graded toward the lower end of our scale rather than the top.
One start time still missing
NMSU has published the Saturday undergraduate ceremony as time to be announced.
That is a genuinely awkward gap for anyone booking travel, and it is the reason we would push back slightly on booking a non-refundable Saturday-night return before the time is set. A morning ceremony and an evening one produce completely different days, and there is no honest way for us to guess which it will be — a previous year’s start time is not evidence about this one.
NMSU’s commencement site is where it will appear. Until then, the Friday evening ceremony is the fixed point to plan around, and the Saturday is the variable.

- Courtyard by Marriott Las Cruces at NMSU: On University Avenue, the closest branded property to the Pan American Center. No commencement-specific booking terms are published.
- Hilton Garden Inn Las Cruces: On Don Roser Drive, a short drive from campus. Listed as a real option rather than on the strength of a published graduation policy.
- Holiday Inn Express & Suites Las Cruces: On South Valley Drive, near the I-10 corridor — useful if the campus-adjacent cluster is gone and you would rather not drive to El Paso.

The ring
| Town | Drive time | Typical availability | Rate vs. epicenter |
|---|---|---|---|
| El Paso, TXCheck rooms in El Paso, TX → | 45 min | A live per-night count was not obtained this session. El Paso is a full metro market with an international airport and hotel depth that Las Cruces cannot approach — comfortably the deepest inventory within an hour of campus. | Wider range than Las Cruces; not independently rate-compared this session. |
| Alamogordo, NMCheck rooms in Alamogordo, NM → | 75 min | A live per-night count was not obtained this session. Alamogordo is a small New Mexico town with a modest independent hotel base, serving its own tourism and military traffic. | Generally below Las Cruces; not independently rate-compared this session. |
Both ring coordinates verified on our mapping tool, as did the Las Cruces epicenter — an unusually clean result for this project, where a substitution is more often the norm than the exception. A live Google Hotels availability check could not be completed this session, so both entries describe market structure rather than a per-night count.

Frequently asked questions
When exactly are NMSU's December ceremonies?
Two of them, on consecutive days at the Pan American Center. The ceremony for doctoral, education specialist and master's candidates is Friday, December 11, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. The undergraduate ceremony is Saturday, December 12, 2026 — NMSU lists its start time as to be announced.
Why does that make it a two-night booking?
Because a Friday-evening ceremony followed by a Saturday one leaves no sensible way to do it in a single night for most families, particularly those flying into El Paso. If your graduate is in only one of the two, that logic weakens — but the hotels closest to campus are being booked by families who need both.
Which hotel is closest to the Pan American Center?
The Courtyard by Marriott Las Cruces at NMSU, on East University Avenue. The Hilton Garden Inn on Don Roser Drive and a Holiday Inn Express on South Valley Drive are the other usual options. None publishes commencement-specific terms.
Is El Paso a realistic alternative?
It is the best one, and the most overlooked. El Paso is about forty-five minutes south down I-10, in a different state, with a full metro hotel market and the international airport many families will already be flying into. See the [ring-town page](/nmsu/sold-out-now-what/).
Has NMSU published a spring 2027 date?
Not as of this check. Its commencement site carries the Fall 2026 ceremonies and references a Spring 2026 programme, with nothing for spring 2027. Check [commencement.nmsu.edu](https://commencement.nmsu.edu/) directly.
