Flat. Las Cruces is a city of around a hundred thousand with a hotel base that does not depend on NMSU’s calendar.
El Paso sits 45 minutes south across the Texas line, with an order of magnitude more rooms and an international airport. For anyone flying in, or booking late, that is the answer rather than a fallback. We are not quoting a precise El Paso figure because the booking engine’s counts for it disagreed sharply with each other; its scale relative to Las Cruces is not in any doubt.
Alamogordo is 70 minutes north east past White Sands with roughly 11 to 49 properties, and Deming 60 minutes west with 4 to 10.

Friday evening, then Saturday
NMSU splits its December commencement across two days at the Pan American Center:
- Friday, December 11, 2026, 6:00 p.m., doctoral, education specialist and master’s candidates
- Saturday, December 12, 2026, 10:00 a.m., undergraduate
That structure matters more for booking than the ceremony times themselves. A Friday-evening event followed by a Saturday one is a two-night weekend for most families, and particularly for anyone flying into El Paso and driving up. The hotels nearest campus are being taken by people who need both nights, not one.
Forty-five minutes to a different state
Las Cruces reads as isolated on a map of New Mexico. It is not, in the way that matters here.
El Paso is about forty-five minutes south on I-10, a full metro market with an international airport and hotel depth that Las Cruces cannot approach. Families from outside the region routinely miss it, because a state line reads as a bigger obstacle than the drive actually is.
Locally, the Courtyard by Marriott Las Cruces at NMSU on East University Avenue is the closest branded property to the Pan American Center, with a Hilton Garden Inn on Don Roser Drive and a Holiday Inn Express on South Valley Drive near the I-10 corridor. None publishes commencement-specific booking terms, and no Las Cruces property was confirmed sold out for a commencement weekend, which is why this cluster is graded toward the lower end of our scale rather than the top.

NMSU lists the Friday graduate ceremony at 6:00 p.m. and the Saturday undergraduate ceremony at 10:00 a.m., both in the White Sands FCU Arena at the Pan American Center, and asks graduates to arrive one hour early. The Saturday time was listed as to be announced until recently.
For a family with graduates in both ceremonies it is still a two-night weekend. For a family with only an undergraduate, a 10 a.m. Saturday start points at the Friday night; that is our reading of the schedule, not NMSU’s. NMSU’s commencement site is where any change would appear.
