Rutgers-New Brunswick and Rutgers Health hold the 261st Anniversary Commencement on Sunday 16 May 2027 at SHI Stadium in Piscataway. It is one university-wide ceremony lasting about 90 minutes, and Rutgers expects over 30,000 people, with traffic it describes as "extremely heavy" across both campuses. Tickets are free: each undergraduate, master's and PhD graduate gets one graduate ticket and TEN guest tickets, which is unusually generous. A digital parking pass is required and ordinary Rutgers permits are not valid that day. The catch is what is not scheduled: all 21 school convocations, which are where a graduate's name is read, still say "Date, time and location to be announced". There is no December or January ceremony; October, January, May and August completers all walk in May.

The date and the venue both hold up
Sunday 16 May 2027, SHI Stadium, Piscataway. The 261st Anniversary Commencement, with President Tate conferring degrees.
This is worth a sentence because it is unusual on this audit. Most clusters we have checked carried a venue that had been read off a page describing an already-held ceremony. Rutgers has not: its commencement site heads the Class of 2027 block with “Sunday, May 16” and “SHI Stadium” together, and its FAQ ties the two again when answering the parking question. The registrar’s academic calendar carries the same date. This is a venue genuinely published against the 2027 round, not a carry-forward.
The street address has gone, though. “1 Scarlet Knight Way” appears on no Rutgers page we could open, and this site would rather omit an unverified detail than print it.
Ninety minutes, thirty thousand people, one ceremony
Rutgers runs a single university-wide ceremony rather than a schedule of them, and its own numbers set the tone for the day.
- About 90 minutes, per the FAQ, which is short for a ceremony of this size and is deliberate: Rutgers describes it as “the perfect event for extended family”.
- Over 30,000 people expected. Rutgers’s own warning is that “traffic will be extremely heavy across the Piscataway and New Brunswick campuses” and asks guests to allow extra time.
- SHI Stadium’s capacity is 52,454, so the constraint on the day is roads and parking rather than seats.
The ceremony itself is a full production: a keynote, the conferral of degrees, the ringing of the Red Lion Bell, performances by the university’s orchestra and choruses, and cannon fire.
Ten tickets each, and they scan once
Rutgers is at the generous end of what this site has recorded. Each undergraduate, master’s and PhD graduate receives one graduate ticket and ten guest tickets, free of charge, with more available on request during registration and transfers possible between classmates.
For comparison, another cluster audited the same day caps guests at six per graduate. Ten changes what a family can plan.
Two mechanical details that catch people out: tickets are NFC-enabled and can only be scanned once, and Rutgers explicitly warns against accepting tickets from anyone other than a classmate transferring them directly. Tickets land in a Scarlet Knights account after the registration window closes rather than arriving by email.
Parking is the part to get right
This is where a Rutgers commencement differs from most, and where an unprepared family loses an hour.
- A Commencement digital parking pass is required. Ordinary Rutgers parking permits are not valid on Commencement Day.
- Graduates can claim up to two free passes during registration, and zones are assigned by that registration, so claiming early gets you a better zone.
- Extra passes cost $10, online or in cash on the College Avenue campus on the day.
- Some Blue Zone areas on Busch Campus are grass lots and Rutgers warns they may be muddy. Footwear is a real consideration for an outdoor ceremony reached across a field.
- Passes are digital, so download them to a phone wallet before you travel rather than relying on signal in a 30,000-person queue.
Free shuttles run from the Livingston and College Avenue campuses with drop-off at Busch near the stadium, and run again afterwards. There is no shuttle from Cook/Douglass, which is the single most useful sentence on this page if that is where you were going to park. Rutgers warns of shuttle queues after the ceremony and suggests bringing water.
Rain or shine, and it means it
SHI Stadium is open-air. Rutgers states that Commencement is held rain or shine, that guests “may experience direct rain or sun”, and that they should expect to sit for the full ceremony in all weather. It suggests planning for anywhere between 50 and 80 degrees, with skies that “can change rapidly”, and recommends a hat, sunscreen and a rain poncho depending on the forecast.
Indoor livestream viewing rooms are available at the Busch, Livingston and College Avenue student centres. Read those as an amenity for guests who would rather not sit in the weather, not as a wet-weather relocation of the ceremony.
The 21 ceremonies that have no dates
Here is the gap that should shape your booking.
University Commencement confers the degrees. The school convocations are where a graduate’s name is read, and every single one of Rutgers’s 21 schools currently shows the placeholder “Date, time and location to be announced” for 2027.
That list includes the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering, Rutgers Business School, the School of Graduate Studies, both medical schools, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Social Work, Public Health, Mason Gross, Bloustein, Douglass Residential College and the Honors College, among others.
So the university-wide ceremony is fixed to a Sunday and the ceremony most families care about is unscheduled. In practice that means holding the Saturday as well until Rutgers publishes, because convocations at other universities of this shape routinely occupy the day before.
No December round, stated rather than assumed
Rutgers is explicit where most universities leave it to inference: “Most students who expect to receive degrees in October 2026, January 2027, May 2027, or August 2027 are eligible to participate in the May 2027 school-based convocations and Commencement events.”
Four completion dates funnel into one ceremony. There is no separate December or January event, and the registrar’s calendar carries no commencement entry for the whole span between now and next May other than 16 May 2027 itself.
One contradiction Rutgers has not resolved
On a single page, its FAQ, Rutgers answers the parking question with “Sunday, May 16, 2027” and the livestream question with “Sunday, May 17”, with no year attached.
17 May 2026 was a Sunday and was the 260th Commencement, so the second string is almost certainly a leftover from last year’s page. Rutgers has not said so, and we are not going to resolve it on the university’s behalf. The same residue appears on the main commencement page, where several photo captions still read “Sunday, May 17, 2026”.
The practical rule: on that site, trust a date only if it carries the year. 16 May 2027 does, from two independent Rutgers sources, and that is the one to book against.
What we checked, and what we could not
Every fact above was read from Rutgers’s own commencement site, its FAQ, its venue page, its school convocation listing and the registrar’s academic calendar on 17 August 2026. The weekday was checked independently: 16 May 2027 is a Sunday.
Not published: the ceremony start time, the street address of SHI Stadium, and any date, time or venue for any of the 21 school convocations.
Not measured: hotel availability. The round is nine months out, and a single reading at that range is one uncontrolled observation rather than a measurement. What the New Brunswick and Route 1 market looks like is on the where to stay page.

Frequently asked questions
What day is Rutgers's 2027 Commencement?
Sunday 16 May 2027, the 261st Anniversary Commencement, at SHI Stadium. Rutgers's commencement site heads its Class of 2027 block with "Sunday, May 16 / SHI Stadium" and its registrar's academic calendar carries the same date. We checked the weekday: 16 May 2027 is a Sunday.
How long is the ceremony, and is my graduate's name read?
About 90 minutes, per Rutgers's own FAQ, and no. The university-wide ceremony confers all degrees with a keynote, the ringing of the Red Lion Bell, the orchestra and choruses and cannon fire. Individual names are read at the school convocations, which are separate events.
When are the school convocations?
Not scheduled. All 21 schools, from the School of Arts and Sciences to the Graduate School of Education, currently show "Date, time and location to be announced" for 2027. For most families that is the ceremony they are actually travelling for, so it is the thing to watch before finalising nights.
How many guests can we bring?
Ten. Rutgers gives each undergraduate, master's and PhD graduate one graduate ticket and ten guest tickets, free of charge, with additional tickets available on request during registration. Tickets are NFC-enabled and scan once each, so they cannot be reused.
Do we need a parking pass?
Yes. A Commencement digital parking pass is required, and regular Rutgers parking permits are not valid on Commencement Day. Graduates can claim up to two free passes; extra passes are $10. Some Blue Zone areas on Busch Campus are grass lots and can be muddy.
Are there shuttles?
Yes, free, running from the Livingston and College Avenue campuses with drop-off at Busch near the stadium, and returning after the ceremony. There is no shuttle from Cook/Douglass, which matters if that is where you were planning to park. Rutgers warns of queues afterwards and suggests bringing water.
What happens if it rains?
It goes ahead. SHI Stadium is open-air and Rutgers states Commencement is held rain or shine, with guests seated in all weather for the duration. It suggests dressing for a range of 50 to 80 degrees. Indoor livestream viewing rooms are available at the Busch, Livingston and College Avenue student centres as an alternative, not as a relocation plan.
Is there a December or January ceremony?
No. Rutgers states that students expecting degrees in October 2026, January 2027, May 2027 or August 2027 are all eligible to take part in the May 2027 convocations and Commencement. Four completion dates, one ceremony.
