Stay in Brookings. The hotel cluster along Sixth Street and the I-29 interchange is the only lodging within 40 miles of the First Bank & Trust Arena. If Brookings is full, Watertown at 43 miles is marginally closer than Sioux Falls at 53, and gets overlooked because Sioux Falls is the bigger name. Book early for the reason that with no fall ceremony, two terms of graduates arrive on one Saturday. One more thing to size before you book rooms: the ceremony is ticketed at six guest tickets per graduate, so the size of the travelling party is capped by SDSU rather than by the hotel.

Brookings, and then a 43-mile gap
There is no hotel on the SDSU campus. The nearest beds are the cluster along Sixth Street and the I-29 interchange, a few minutes from the First Bank & Trust Arena.
After that, nothing for more than forty miles.

Two things about that table are worth pausing on.
Watertown is closer than Sioux Falls, and almost nobody checks it first, because Sioux Falls is the name everyone in the region knows. If Brookings looks tight for your dates, Watertown is the more sensible first call on distance alone.
There is no row under 40 miles. Eastern South Dakota between these towns is farmland. Most college towns we cover have some nearby exit with a couple of chain hotels; Brookings does not.
Why nine months ahead is not paranoid here
SDSU’s spring commencement is Saturday 8 May 2027, already published on the university’s own pages.
The reason to act on it early has nothing to do with hype and everything to do with an administrative decision, and SDSU states it rather than leaving it to be inferred: its academic calendar carries the note “There is no fall 2026 commencement ceremony”, and its senior year handbook adds that “the university does not hold a commencement ceremony in December or August”. Students finishing in autumn are invited to walk the following spring.
At most universities a December ceremony draws off a share of the year’s graduates and their families. Here it does not. Two terms arrive together, on one Saturday, in a town with no overflow inside forty miles.
The sitting you draw changes what you need
SDSU has not published 2027 ceremony times. In 2026 the day ran in three sittings by college, at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
If that holds, a morning sitting makes driving in from Sioux Falls realistic, if early. An evening sitting finishing after dark, with the nearest alternative bed 43 miles off, is the case where a room in Brookings stops being a preference. Since you cannot know which you have yet, something refundable in town is the cheap hedge.
What we could not put on this page
We would rather give you a number to divide: a graduating-class figure set against a room count at the nearest hotel, the way the Kansas State and Binghamton pages do. Neither number was available for SDSU.
No class-size figure appeared on SDSU’s own pages, and no reliable room count for the Brookings cluster was established. No Brookings property has been confirmed sold out for a commencement weekend, and none publishes commencement-specific booking terms that we could find.
So the case here is the date, the missing fall ceremony, the six-ticket limit and the 43-mile gap. That is genuinely enough to act on, and we would rather leave it there than dress it up with a figure we have not checked.
We have not measured availability either, and we will not guess at it. The round is nine months out. A single reading at that range is one uncontrolled observation, not a measurement, and this site does not publish those.

Is there anywhere closer than 43 miles?
No. That is the defining feature of this market. Eastern South Dakota between Brookings and its neighbours is farmland, and the hotel inventory is at the towns. There is no convenient half-hour overflow option the way there is at some campuses.
Do Brookings hotels have commencement booking rules?
None that we could find published. No minimum-stay requirement, deposit-forfeit date or commencement-specific cancellation policy turned up for any Brookings property. Assume standard terms and read them before committing.
Why does the map show the town rather than the arena?
The First Bank & Trust Arena's own coordinate returns a 404 on the booking map we use. Rather than drop an unverified pin, the map is anchored on central Brookings, which sits nearer the hotels in any case.
