Bowdoin's Commencement is Saturday 29 May 2027, held outdoors in front of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art and lasting about two hours. Guest seating opens at 8:00 a.m. and Bowdoin asks everyone to be seated by 9:15 a.m. for the procession. There is NO LIMIT on guests, which is unusual and generous. The catch is the weather: if severe conditions force the ceremony into Sidney J. Watson Arena, TICKETS BECOME REQUIRED AND ARE CAPPED AT FOUR PER GRADUATING SENIOR, and that decision is made at 6:00 a.m. on the morning itself. Ordinary rain does not trigger it, and umbrellas are fine. Bowdoin publishes future dates too: 27 May 2028 and 26 May 2029, always the Saturday before Memorial Day.

The guest rule changes at six in the morning
Most universities on this site tell you your ticket allowance months ahead. Bowdoin tells you there is no allowance at all, and then attaches one condition that is worth planning your whole trip around.
Saturday 29 May 2027, outdoors, in front of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. About two hours.
Bowdoin’s position on guests is as generous as any covered here: “There is no limit on the number of guests graduating seniors may invite to attend Commencement Weekend.” Bring the whole family.
Then the condition:
“Tickets to the Commencement ceremony will be required in the event of severe weather.”
And if that happens, they are limited to four per graduating senior, claimed by the senior and handed out by them.
The decision is made by 6:00 a.m. on Commencement morning.
Read that as a planning problem rather than a curiosity. This is an outdoor ceremony in coastal Maine in late May. A family of eight can fly in, book two rooms, and discover at breakfast that four of them are watching on a laptop. That is not a remote risk, it is a published procedure with a stated cap.
Two practical responses. Install the Commencement mobile app before you travel, because Bowdoin uses it for the 6 a.m. notification alongside email and the websites. And if your party is larger than four, agree in advance who goes rather than deciding it in a hotel lobby at 6:15 in the morning.
Ordinary rain does not trigger any of this. Bowdoin’s guidance for that is simply to bring an umbrella and rain gear, which incidentally makes it one of the few ceremonies on this site where an umbrella is not confiscated at the gate.
Tickets are separately required, weather regardless, for the Friday night Lobster Bake and the Saturday Commencement Luncheon.
The morning, in order
| Time | What |
|---|---|
| 6:00 a.m. | Indoor or outdoor decision announced |
| 8:00 a.m. | Guest seating opens |
| 9:15 a.m. | Bowdoin asks all guests to be seated |
| Shortly after | Commencement procession |
| About two hours | Ceremony |
Seating is open except where marked reserved, so arriving near 8:00 rather than near 9:15 is what gets a large party seated together.
Your graduate will be in the white chairs in front of the stage, alphabetically. Facing the stage, A to K on the right, L to Z on the left.
Dress is business casual, and Bowdoin’s own advice about the weather is blunt: May in Maine is extremely variable, so bring rain gear, warm layers and something for sun, and wear shoes you can cross wet grass in.
Three years of dates, published
Bowdoin does something helpful here and states the rule rather than only the date:
“The Commencement ceremony is always held on the Saturday before Memorial Day (Memorial Day Weekend.)”
And then lists them out:
- Class of 2027: Saturday 29 May 2027
- Class of 2028: Saturday 27 May 2028
- Class of 2029: Saturday 26 May 2029
That rule is also the reason this weekend is hard to book, and the where to stay page is about exactly that: Bowdoin has permanently scheduled its graduation onto coastal Maine’s busiest tourism weekend.
Practical odds and ends
Watching remotely is a real option rather than a consolation. Both Commencement and Baccalaureate are live streamed at Bowdoin Live, and the recording appears on Bowdoin’s YouTube channel the day after.
Accessibility. All events are accessible, a limited number of wheelchairs can be reserved through the Events Office, and golf carts and shuttle buses run between main campus and Watson Arena or Farley Field House.
Photographs. GradImages photographs every senior receiving their diploma and again coming off the stage, with proofs emailed about two weeks later, so nobody in your party needs to be the designated photographer.
Eating on campus. Moulton Union is open to graduates and guests from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at a guest rate of $11.00.
Pets are prohibited inside campus buildings and at all dining events. Service animals are welcome.
Absent rather than estimated
One caution about the source. Bowdoin’s FAQ is only partly rolled over: its move-out answer still refers to seniors vacating rooms by 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, 23 May 2026, which is last year’s date sitting beside correctly updated 2027, 2028 and 2029 commencement dates. Read each answer on its own rather than assuming the page has a single vintage, and treat the move-out timing as unconfirmed for 2027.
Not published at the time of writing: the 2027 Commencement Weekend schedule of events, including times for the Baccalaureate ceremony, the Friday Lobster Bake and the Saturday Luncheon; and any parking arrangements for the weekend.
If you are looking at Brunswick this autumn instead, Homecoming runs 25 to 27 September 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Do guests need tickets?
Normally no. Bowdoin states there is no limit on the number of guests a graduating senior may invite to Commencement Weekend. But tickets become required if severe weather moves the ceremony indoors to Watson Arena, and in that case they are limited to four per graduating senior and have to be claimed by the senior to pass on. Tickets are also required for the Friday night Lobster Bake and the Saturday Commencement Luncheon regardless of weather.
When is the weather decision made?
By 6:00 a.m. on Commencement morning. Bowdoin communicates it through the college and Commencement websites, by email, and via notifications on the Commencement mobile app. Install the app before you travel if your party is larger than four, because that is the alert that tells you whether everyone can attend.
What time should we arrive?
Guest seating opens at 8:00 a.m. and Bowdoin asks all guests to be seated by 9:15 a.m. so they can watch the procession. Seating is open apart from reserved areas, so ask an usher if you are unsure. The ceremony runs about two hours.
Where will our graduate be sitting?
In white chairs in front of the stage, in alphabetical order by surname. Facing the stage, surnames A to K are on the right and L to Z on the left. Useful to know before you choose your own seats.
What should we wear?
Business casual, and plan for Maine in late May, which Bowdoin itself describes as extremely variable. Bring rain gear and warm layers as well as something for sun. Wear shoes you can walk on wet grass in, because the ceremony is outdoors on the lawn.
What if someone cannot get a seat or cannot travel?
Both the Commencement and Baccalaureate ceremonies are live streamed at Bowdoin Live, and the recording goes up on Bowdoin's YouTube channel the day after. That is the fallback if the four-ticket cap is triggered on the morning.
Is the weekend accessible?
Bowdoin says all events are accessible and keeps a limited number of wheelchairs available to reserve through the Events Office on 207-725-3433 or events@bowdoin.edu. Golf carts and shuttle buses run between the main campus and Watson Arena or Farley Field House for guests who need them.
