The name is read at the last ceremony of the day

Brown’s Sunday looks like it builds to the University Ceremony. For a family, it does not.

Brown states it plainly: all degrees are conferred symbolically at the University Ceremony. Afterwards, academic departments hold separate ceremonies where graduating students’ names are read and seniors cross the stage to receive their diplomas.

Those departmental ceremonies run roughly 2:30 to 4:45 p.m., in various locations across campus.

So the moment most families travel for is the last thing on a day that starts at 9:45 in the morning. Anyone planning to slip away after the University Ceremony finishes will miss it.

Wristbands, not tickets

Brown’s access control is unusual and worth understanding before the day.

Wristbands are required for all graduating students and guests to access College Green for the University Ceremony. They are also required for guests to watch the College Ceremony livestream from the Green, and medical students and their guests need them to access College Green throughout the weekend.

The one genuinely ticketed event is Campus Dance on the Friday night, and Brown is explicit that all attendees must have a ticket to enter.

Medical students are the exception to the wristband-only pattern: each receives four tickets, distributed at a mandatory rehearsal on the Saturday.

Two ceremonies your family cannot attend

This surprises people, so it is worth stating directly.

Baccalaureate, Saturday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in America, is a multifaith ceremony for undergraduates. Due to limited seating, only seniors are allowed into the church. All guests and family watch via livestream from designated locations.

The undergraduate College Ceremony on the Sunday works the same way: only seniors on the church grounds, with family and friends remaining on College Green where large screens carry a continuous view.

Neither is a snub, both are capacity limits, but a family that has flown in expecting to sit in a church pew should know in advance.

Sunday runs about seven hours end to end. Add a Friday night dance and a Saturday afternoon, and this is a genuine three-day weekend rather than a ceremony with some events around it.

Times are Brown’s own, several marked estimated, and they come from the May 2026 version of the schedule, which was still the live page when we checked.

The Procession, and why to watch it on a screen

The University Procession is the tradition Brown is known for. Graduates march through the Van Wickle Gates, which students pass through only twice: inward when they arrive and outward when they graduate.

Brown’s own guidance is unromantic about spectating. The Procession involves roughly 7,000 participants, which it says makes photography and lines of sight challenging for guests, and it advises parents and relatives to find seats on College Green and watch the livestream from there.

Take that advice. A seat on the Green before ten in the morning is also how you are positioned for the University Ceremony at 1:15.

The dates are confirmed, on the registrar rather than the commencement site

Commencement Weekend 2027 is Saturday 29 to Sunday 30 May, with the University Ceremony on the Sunday.

That comes from Brown’s 2026-2027 Academic Calendar, which states verbatim: “SAT, MAY 29 UNTIL SUN, MAY 30 | Commencement Weekend.” Both weekdays cross-check.

Worth knowing where to look, because the two Brown sources disagree. commencement.brown.edu still displayed the May 2026 weekend when we checked on 12 August 2026, including its full schedule. The registrar had the 2027 dates. If you find yourself comparing the two and they seem to conflict, the registrar is the one holding the current date.

Brown’s commencement site still shows the May 2026 weekend, so it is easy to conclude the 2027 dates are unpublished. The registrar carries them.

One wrinkle on the Friday. The registrar’s official span is Saturday to Sunday. Brown’s published 2026 schedule additionally put Campus Dance on the Friday evening, outside that span. So if Campus Dance matters to your family, you want a Friday night that the official dates do not cover. This page does not widen the window to absorb it; it just tells you it is there.

Absent rather than estimated

Not published for 2027 at the time of writing: ceremony times, the departmental ceremony schedule, and the on-campus housing registration and cancellation dates. The DATES are published, on the registrar calendar. Brown’s Residential Life housing programme published 2026 rates and a second-Friday-of-May cancellation deadline; the 2027 equivalents were not out.
