Two properties in town, nineteen twelve minutes north

Kahuku, twelve minutes up Kamehameha Highway, holds nineteen bookable properties, including the Turtle Bay resort area. That is nearly ten times what Laie has, at a drive most people would not think twice about.

Kailua is sometimes named as the fallback here, forty-five minutes in the other direction. It has one bookable property, which makes it both the furthest option and the smallest. Six nearer towns, Kahuku among them, are the better place to look and are in the ring below.

A warning for anyone checking this themselves. Searching a booking site for “Kailua, Hawaii” returns Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island, a different island reachable only by plane, showing 91 properties. If you search Kailua at all, disambiguate it as Kailua, Oahu.

There is no campus fallback

Worth stating plainly because several clusters on this site do have one.

BYU-Hawaii does not provide guest housing. Its own student housing operation says so. Dartmouth, Yale, Brown and Syracuse all open rooms to visiting families for commencement; Laie does not, and with two bookable properties in town that absence does real work.

So the sequence is: Laie first if you are early, Kahuku or Hauula if you are not, Honolulu only if you are willing to drive an hour on a ceremony morning.

What Laie actually has

The Courtyard Oahu North Shore is oceanfront, about half a mile from campus, and effectively the only conventional hotel in town. There is no published commencement rate, minimum stay or cancellation policy; the consistent advice in visitor guidance is simply to book early.

Beyond it, Laie’s market is vacation rentals, beach cottages and B and Bs. Those are worth searching, and they carry a specific risk this project has documented elsewhere: independent rentals in a town with almost no hotel competition tend to have unforgiving cancellation terms. Read them before you pay.

Two ceremonies, four months apart

Fall Commencement: Friday 11 December 2026. Winter Commencement: Friday 16 April 2027.

Both are Fridays, which is BYU-Hawaii’s established pattern, and both come straight from the registrar’s academic dates page.

There is a third entry on that page, a Spring 2027 graduation date in June. It is a conferral date with no ceremony attached, so nobody should build travel around it. It is the kind of entry that looks like a third commencement to anyone skimming.

What is not established

No ceremony time is published for either round, and the registrar’s dates page names no venue. The Cannon Activities Center is carried on this cluster because it hosted the most recent confirmed ceremony, not because BYU-Hawaii has named it for December.

No named Laie property was confirmed sold out, and no commencement-specific rate or minimum stay was verified at the Courtyard or anywhere else. Rates were not recorded.

Drive times are road estimates for the windward and North Shore route, which is a two-lane highway for much of its length and slows considerably at peak times. Treat them as optimistic on a Friday morning.
