BYU–Hawaii's registrar lists Fall Commencement on December 8, 2026 and Winter Commencement on April 16, 2027. The Courtyard Oahu North Shore, oceanfront and about half a mile from campus, is effectively the only conventional hotel in Laie — and BYU–Hawaii states it does not provide guest housing. Kailua is 45 minutes away, Honolulu about an hour.

One hotel, half a mile from campus

The Courtyard Oahu North Shore sits oceanfront off Kamehameha Highway, about half a mile from the BYU–Hawaii campus, and it is the only Marriott in Laie. For practical purposes it is the only conventional hotel in the town.

That is the entire local supply. Everything else in Laie is a vacation rental, a beach cottage or a B&B — real options, and worth searching, but not a hotel market in the sense that word usually carries on this site.

No dated sellout for the Courtyard was independently confirmed, and we are not going to invent one. The visitor guidance we found says consistently that it is popular and to book early, which is softer evidence than a named sellout and is reported as such.

The university does not house guests

BYU–Hawaii’s housing operation states plainly that it does not provide guest housing.

That sentence does more work than it looks like it should. Across this project, the campuses with the tightest local hotel markets have usually had a release valve — Dartmouth rents residence halls, Yale runs residential-college guest housing, Brown and Syracuse both operate commencement housing programmes, Williams opens vacated dorms. When the town runs out, the college absorbs some of it.

Here that door is closed, and it is closed by the university’s own statement rather than by our inference. One hotel, no dorms, and an island.

The ring is a 45-minute drive down the coast

The nearest alternatives are Kailua at roughly forty-five minutes and Honolulu at about an hour.

Neither is a fallback in the way a twenty-minute ring town is a fallback. Waikiki has effectively unlimited rooms, so this is not a page about running out of inventory — it is a page about the difference between staying half a mile from the Cannon Activities Center and driving the windward coast on a ceremony morning.

Six closer towns that ought to soften that gap are absent from this cluster: Kahuku, Turtle Bay Resort, Haleiwa, Hauula, Punaluu and Kaneohe all failed to resolve on our mapping tool. Kahuku and Turtle Bay in particular sit ten to fifteen minutes up the coast and are exactly where a family would look first. We cannot place a verified pin on any of them, so none is listed — search them yourself, because on distance alone they beat both towns above.

  • Courtyard Oahu North Shore: Oceanfront off Kamehameha Highway, about half a mile from campus, and the only Marriott property in Laie. No commencement-specific booking terms are published; the recurring advice in visitor guidance is simply to book early.
  • Vacation rentals, beach cottages and B&Bs in Laie: Named here as a category rather than a property because that is genuinely what the local market is beyond the Courtyard. Worth searching early, and worth reading cancellation terms carefully — independent rentals in a one-hotel town carry the risk documented in this project's Virginia Tech cluster.

This ring is short for a specific reason: six closer North Shore and windward towns failed to resolve on our mapping tool — Kahuku, Turtle Bay Resort, Haleiwa, Hauula, Punaluu and Kaneohe. Several are genuinely the first places a family would look, particularly Kahuku and Turtle Bay at around ten to fifteen minutes. None is listed with a coordinate we could not verify, and all are worth searching manually. A live Google Hotels availability check could not be completed this session.

Frequently asked questions

When are BYU–Hawaii's next commencements?

Its registrar's academic calendar lists Fall Commencement on December 8, 2026 and Winter Commencement on April 16, 2027. One caution: the December date falls on a Tuesday, while recent winter ceremonies have been Fridays — Winter 2026 was Friday, April 17. Confirm the day with the registrar before booking flights.

How many hotels are actually in Laie?

Essentially one. The Courtyard Oahu North Shore is oceanfront off Kamehameha Highway, roughly half a mile from campus, and is the only Marriott in Laie. Beyond it the local market is vacation rentals, beach cottages and B&Bs rather than hotels.

Can families stay on campus?

No. BYU–Hawaii's housing operation states directly that it does not provide guest housing. That closes a route several other clusters on this site rely on — Dartmouth, Yale, Brown and Syracuse all run some form of guest or dorm accommodation for commencement. Here there is none.

Is Honolulu a realistic alternative?

Realistic, but understand what you are choosing. Waikiki is one of the deepest hotel markets in the country, so rooms exist — the cost is about an hour each way around the island, on roads that are not fast, on a ceremony morning. See the [ring-town page](/byu-hawaii/sold-out-now-what/).

What about Turtle Bay or Kahuku, just up the coast?

They would be the obvious near options and neither is on this page. Both failed to resolve on the mapping tool we use to verify every coordinate before publishing it, along with Haleiwa, Hauula, Punaluu and Kaneohe. They are worth searching directly — we simply cannot map them for you.
