The date moved, and Cal Poly’s own site has not caught up
Before anything about hotels, the thing that will actually cost someone a trip.
Cal Poly’s 2027 commencement is 21 to 23 May. In 2026 it was 13 to 14 June. That is a shift of nearly three weeks, earlier.
The registrar’s academic calendar states it plainly: “May 21, 22-23 | Friday | Saturday - Sunday | Commencement.” The same calendar describes a 15-week term with Spring 2027 beginning on 25 January, where 2026 ran on a quarter calendar that pushed graduation into mid-June.
And when we checked on 12 August 2026, Cal Poly’s own commencement site still described the June 2026 ceremonies. Anyone reading the obvious page, or working from last year, books the wrong three weeks.
This is the single most consequential fact on the cluster, which is why it is above the lodging.
The hotels here are documented selling out a year ahead
Cal Poly is one of the best-evidenced clusters on this site, and the evidence is people saying so on the record.
Local news quoted Hotel SLO’s director of guest services: “We have almost every room sold to Poly parents this weekend”, with 68 of 78 rooms already booked. The owner of the 29-room Morro Shores Inn and Suites in Morro Bay said “tomorrow is sold out.”
The same reporting noted that downtown San Luis Obispo hotels routinely sell out a year in advance, some within hours of opening.
Two named properties confirming their own sellouts in their own words is the strongest tier of evidence this project tracks.
Where to look, in order

Pismo Beach is deeper than San Luis Obispo itself and about fifteen minutes south, and it was not on this page at all before. Paso Robles at thirty minutes is the only market with real depth.
One warning about figures quoted elsewhere. Morro Bay and Paso Robles are sometimes described with counts in the thousands. Those are metro-wide search totals rather than hotels in either town; the real figures are 30 and 162.
Atascadero deserves a specific mention: it is the only inland option on the ladder, so it is the least exposed to the Central Coast’s own tourist demand. On a coastal weekend that is worth more than its modest count suggests.
Six ceremonies, so check which one is yours
Cal Poly runs six ceremonies across three days, at 8:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., split by college, at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Each lasts roughly two to two and a half hours.
So “graduation weekend” is not one booking. A College of Agriculture family and a College of Liberal Arts family need different nights. The logistics page has the 2026 college split, which is the best available guide until Cal Poly posts 2027.

Cal Poly had not published its 2027 ceremony times, college assignments or ticket allocation when we checked; its commencement site still described June 2026. Everything on this page about ceremony structure is the 2026 arrangement, labelled as such.
The sellout quotes describe specific past weekends reported by KSBY, not a forecast for May 2027. No named property was confirmed sold out for the 2027 window itself, and no commencement rate or minimum stay was verified anywhere on this ladder.

How many nights should I book?
