Book early rather than counting on a fallback, because there is not a deep one. A live check for the December window returned 14 bookable properties in Mount Pleasant, 16 in Saginaw forty-five minutes away and 12 in Midland at thirty. Those are all much the same size, so unlike most college towns there is no larger city nearby waiting to absorb an overflow, and the whole ladder is roughly 45 properties. Central Michigan graduates TWICE a year, on Saturday 19 December 2026 and 7-8 May 2027 (a Friday-Saturday pair), both at McGuirk Arena, so that ladder is compressed twice rather than once.

A flat ladder, which is its own problem
Most clusters on this site have a shape: a thin college town and a deeper city an hour away doing the rescuing. Mount Pleasant does not have that shape, and it is worth knowing before you assume a fallback exists.
A live availability check on 12 August 2026, for the nights spanning both ceremony days:
| Where | Drive | Bookable properties |
|---|---|---|
| Mount Pleasant | epicenter | 14 |
| Midland, MI | 30 min | 12 |
| Saginaw, MI | 45 min | 16 |
| Alma, MI | 25 min | 3 |
| Clare, MI | 25 min | 3 |
Fourteen, twelve and sixteen. Nothing on this ladder is meaningfully deeper than the campus town itself.
That changes the instruction. On a cluster with a big city nearby, the honest advice is often “book late if you must, the ring will hold you”. Here it is not. The whole practical market is around 45 properties, and if the December weekend goes, driving forty-five minutes to Saginaw buys you two more hotels than staying put would have.
Book early. That is the whole strategy, and there is no clever alternative to it.
It happens twice a year
Central Michigan graduates in December and May, not once a spring.
- Saturday 19 December 2026
- Friday 7 and Saturday 8 May 2027
And it publishes further ahead than most: its Future Commencement Dates page also carries 17-18 December 2027 and 5-6 May 2028.
So those 45 properties absorb a graduation surge twice a year, every year. It is the same structural point that applies at BYU-Idaho and Bowling Green State: a small market that never gets a long quiet stretch to recover in.
The upside of publishing that far ahead is real, though. If your student is a sophomore, you can book their graduation weekend now against a date the university has already committed to.
Which night?
December is now a single day, Saturday 19 December 2026, at McGuirk Arena, in three ceremonies: 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. for undergraduates by college, and 4:00 p.m. for the graduate ceremony. Spring 2027 is still a Friday-Saturday pair, 7-8 May, and its times are not published.
Our reading, not CMU’s: a 9:00 a.m. start makes Friday night the sensible booking for a family driving in, and the 4:00 p.m. graduate ceremony moves the question to Saturday night. In a town with fourteen hotels, either way, book early.
What is not established
The Spring 2027 ceremony times and college split, doors times and parking guidance for either round, and CMU’s guest-ticket policy, which this page has not summarised.
No named Mount Pleasant property was confirmed sold out for the December window, and no commencement rate, minimum stay or cancellation policy was verified anywhere on this ladder. Drive times are fair-weather estimates on central-Michigan roads in December, which is optimistic by definition.

The ring
| Town | Drive time | Typical availability | Rate vs. epicenter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alma, MICheck rooms in Alma, MI → | 25 min | 3 bookable properties on a live check for the same window. Small, and listed because it is closer than Saginaw rather than because it is deep. Clare, tested at the same time, also returns 3. | Small-town tier, limited choice. |
| Midland, MICheck rooms in Midland, MI → | 30 min | 12 bookable properties on a live check for the December window on 12 August 2026, none flagged sold out. Comparable in size to Mount Pleasant itself rather than deeper, so it is a genuine alternative but not a rescue. | Broad chain tier, generally comparable to Mount Pleasant. |
| Saginaw, MICheck rooms in Saginaw, MI → | 45 min | 16 bookable properties on a live check for the same window, none flagged sold out. The deepest single market on this ladder, though only modestly ahead of the other two. | Broad chain tier, typically the cheapest of the three. |
Counts come from a live per-window availability check run on 12 August 2026 for the three nights spanning both ceremony days. The useful result is the flatness: MOUNT PLEASANT 14, SAGINAW 16, MIDLAND 12 are all much the same size, so unlike most clusters on this site there is no deep city waiting to absorb an overflow. Alma and Clare hold three properties each. The whole ladder is roughly 45 properties, and it fills twice a year rather than once because Central Michigan graduates in both December and May.

Frequently asked questions
How many hotels are there?
14 bookable properties in Mount Pleasant on a live check for the December window, 16 in Saginaw and 12 in Midland. Alma and Clare hold three each. The whole practical ladder is about 45 properties.
Which is the real fallback?
There is not an obvious one, and that is the useful finding. Saginaw is the largest at 16 and it is forty-five minutes away. Midland is closer at thirty minutes but slightly smaller than Mount Pleasant itself. Nowhere on this ladder is deep enough to rescue a sold-out weekend, so the advice is to book early rather than to plan a retreat.
When are the ceremonies?
Saturday 19 December 2026 (three ceremonies, at 9:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.), then Friday 7 and Saturday 8 May 2027. Central Michigan's Future Commencement Dates page also lists 17-18 December 2027 and 5-6 May 2028, so it publishes further ahead than most universities on this site.
Do I need one night or two?
For December, it depends on the session. Everything is on Saturday 19 December: 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. for undergraduates by college, 4:00 p.m. for the graduate ceremony. Our reading is that a 9:00 a.m. start makes Friday night the sensible booking for anyone travelling in, and the 4:00 p.m. ceremony makes Saturday night the question. For May 2027 it is still a Friday-Saturday pair with no times published, so establish the day before booking.
Why does graduating twice a year matter?
Because the same 45 properties absorb a surge in December and again in May, rather than once a spring. A town of this size does not get a long quiet stretch to recover in, which is the same structural point that applies at BYU-Idaho and Bowling Green State.
Is there anything else on that weekend?
Nothing we found for December. Mount Pleasant's other big visitor weekend is Homecoming, 1 to 4 October 2026, which has its own page here.
