WUFT News recorded the AC Hotel Gainesville Downtown going from $300 a night to $820, the Hyatt Place Downtown from $180 to $649, and Hotel Eleo from roughly $180 to $632. Parents interviewed had booked a full year ahead, and one booked two separate weekends because rooms "sell out very quickly". The next round is close: Friday 11 December 2026 with doctoral at 2:00 p.m. and a bachelor and master ceremony at 7:00 p.m., then three more on Saturday 12 December and an MBA ceremony on Sunday 13 December. Three hundred dollars becomes eight hundred and twenty
Most rate-spike claims on lodging sites are unsourced. This one comes from the university’s own newsroom.
WUFT News, UF’s public radio newsroom, documented specific before-and-after rates at named Gainesville properties for graduation weekend:
- AC Hotel Gainesville Downtown: $300 a night, rising to $820
- Hyatt Place Downtown: $180, rising to $649
- Hotel Eleo at the University of Florida: roughly $180, rising to $632
Roughly a tripling, at three separate named hotels, reported by a newsroom with no stake in selling you a room.
One honest qualification. That reporting is from 2022, and it is the most recent documented figure set we could find. It is strong evidence of the pattern and it is not a price list for December 2026. Rates will have moved; the shape of the spike is the durable finding.
What the parents in that story actually did
The most useful detail is not the rates. It is the behaviour.
Parents interviewed had booked a full year ahead. One booked two separate weekends because rooms “sell out very quickly”, holding both until the ceremony schedule firmed up.
That is a real strategy from real families responding to a real market, and it is more instructive than any general instruction to book early. If experienced UF parents are holding two weekends as insurance, the market is tight enough that a single speculative booking is genuinely risky.
Five ceremonies in December, split by college
UF’s next round is four months out and fully published.
Friday 11 December 2026 carries the doctoral ceremony at 2:00 p.m. and a bachelor and master ceremony at 7:00 p.m.
Saturday 12 December carries three more, at 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., divided by college.
Six ceremonies across three days means your college decides your day and your hour. A 9:00 a.m. Saturday and a 7:00 p.m. Friday are different bookings, and in a market that triples its rates you do not want to hold the wrong night.
There is a Sunday, and it is easy to miss. The Warrington MBA ceremony is at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday 13 December, which means an MBA family needs the Saturday night rather than checking out on it. UF publishes which colleges walk in which ceremony, so you can work out your night before you book rather than after.
Spring is three weeks, not a weekend
This is the detail most likely to catch a family out, because the round is far wider than a graduation weekend.
UF’s spring 2027 round runs from Sunday 25 April to Saturday 15 May. The dense part is the middle: college recognition ceremonies run Wednesday 28 April to Monday 3 May 2027, with the university-wide ceremony at 7:00 p.m. on Friday 30 April and the doctoral ceremony at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday 29 April. Either side of that sit an MBA ceremony on 25 April and, a clear fortnight later, Law on 14 May and Pharmacy on 15 May.
If your graduate’s college holds its recognition ceremony on the Monday, your trip has nothing to do with the weekend everyone else is booking. If your graduate is a law or pharmacy student, your trip is two weeks after it, in a Gainesville that has gone back to normal pricing. That is worth knowing before you pay a graduation-weekend rate you did not need to.
Forty-three minutes to real depth
Ocala is about 43 minutes south and returned 1,537 properties on a live check with no sold-out signals. It is a real Florida city with its own hotel base and it is the realistic answer when Gainesville’s rates bite.
Lake City is 53 minutes north and returned 143. Thinner, further, and the reserve rather than the plan.
For a 7:00 p.m. Friday ceremony, Ocala is comfortable. For a 9:00 a.m. Saturday one it means an early start, but against a $820 room the calculation is not close.
What we checked, and what we could not
The December and spring schedules come from UF’s own commencement pages, with every weekday cross-checked: 11 December 2026 is a Friday, 12 December a Saturday, and the spring span runs Wednesday to Monday as described. The rate figures and parent interviews come from WUFT News with its own 2022 date attached, stated above rather than hidden.
The December and spring schedules were re-read at source on 18 August 2026. The per-college assignments we previously could not establish are published, and are now set out on the ceremony logistics page along with the venues, guest door times and UF’s ticket position.
What we still could not establish: current 2026 rates at any of the three named hotels, and a dollar comparison for the ring towns, because the availability tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation.
