JMU Commencement 2027: Three Days, Split by College

Three days, and only one of them is yours

JMU does not hold a single Commencement. It holds a series of them across Thursday 13, Friday 14 and Saturday 15 May 2027, all at the Atlantic Union Bank Center, divided by college.

That structure is the whole logistical story. A family whose graduate is in the College of Arts and Letters is attending a 9:00 a.m. ceremony on the Thursday with doors at 7:30 a.m. A family whose graduate is in a college scheduled for the Saturday is on an entirely different trip, with different flights and probably a different number of nights.

The College of Health and Behavioral Studies illustrates the point on its own: it graduates twice on the Thursday, at 2:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 p.m. Two ceremonies, one college, one day. Knowing which of the two applies to you is not a detail.

What a 7:30 a.m. door time is telling you

Universities publish door times for a reason, and ninety minutes ahead of a 9:00 a.m. start is a longer runway than most.

Read practically, it makes driving in on the morning of a Thursday ceremony a poor plan. Winchester is roughly 68 minutes away and Staunton about 34. Leaving Winchester in time to be seated comfortably means being on I-81 before 6:00 a.m., on a weekday, on a corridor that carries freight traffic. Arriving the night before is the difference between a manageable morning and a bad one.

The venue does not move, which helps

One thing here is simpler than most campuses in this project: every ceremony across all three days is in the same building, the Atlantic Union Bank Center at 395 Bluestone Drive on campus.

Families attending two ceremonies for two different graduates do not have to cross town between them. The variable is the day and the hour, not the address.

What we checked, and what we could not

Dates, the college-by-college order and the 7:30 a.m. door time all come from JMU’s own commencement page. Each date was cross-checked against the calendar: 13 May 2027 is a Thursday, 14 May a Friday and 15 May a Saturday, matching what the university publishes. That check exists because a schedule carried over from a previous year almost always fails it.

Tickets are published and they matter. JMU states that “All ceremonies held at the Atlantic Union Bank Center will require tickets”, and that “Each graduate may reserve up to six guest tickets and must also secure a ticket for themselves. Ticket reservations will open mid-Fall 2026.” Six guests is a real cap rather than a suggestion, so a larger family needs to know it now rather than in the spring.

There is also a WINTER COMMENCEMENT this page did not previously mention: Saturday 19 December 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at the Atlantic Union Bank Center, a single university-wide ceremony rather than the six-college split the spring uses.

What is still not here: parking arrangements and the full college-by-college grid for the Friday and Saturday, neither of which JMU had published in a form we could cite at the time of this check. Rather than reconstruct last year’s version and present it as this year’s, those are left out. JMU’s own page is the place to look, and it is linked below.
