Mizzou Graduation Hotels: 15 Percent of Columbia Is Available

Fifteen percent, and the tourism bureau said it out loud

Cities usually talk up their capacity. Columbia’s did the opposite.

A Convention and Visitors Bureau spokeswoman told local news that for graduation weekend “most Columbia hotels are sold out or nearly sold out”, with “a few scattered rooms left”.

Separate local reporting supplies the arithmetic. Columbia holds roughly 3,300 hotel rooms, of which about 15 percent are available on graduation weekend, against more than 5,900 Mizzou students graduating across it.

Fifteen percent of 3,300 is under 500 rooms. That is the entire city, for a weekend serving nearly six thousand graduates and the families who travel for them. This is one of the few clusters on this site where a tourism office has effectively told you not to bother trying late.

Your college picks your building, not just your day

Missouri’s December round is among the most fragmented calendars in this project, and the fragmentation runs in an unusual direction.

Ten ceremonies across two days. Friday 18 December 2026 runs from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday 19 December runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. And they are split between two different venues, the Hearnes Center and Jesse Auditorium, by college.

So a Mizzou family needs to know two things before booking, not one: which day, and which building. The two venues are close enough to walk between, but a family attending ceremonies for two graduates in different colleges can find themselves crossing campus between them on the same day.

One hotel across the road, and it is small

The Hampton Inn and Suites Columbia at the University of Missouri sits directly across Highway 740 from campus, minutes from Faurot Field, the Hearnes Center and Mizzou Arena. It holds roughly 132 to 134 rooms.

Against 5,900 graduates, that is not a solution. It is the best-located of a small set, and it publishes no commencement-specific policy that we could find, so the table below leaves those terms blank rather than inventing them.

The ring is unusually unhelpful here

Most clusters on this site offer a fallback twenty or thirty minutes out with real depth. Missouri offers a choice between close-and-shallow and deep-and-far.

Jefferson City is about 35 minutes away and returned just 116 properties. The state capital, genuinely close, and thin.

Kansas City is 113 minutes and returned 2,446. All the depth you could want, at nearly two hours each way.

For a Friday afternoon ceremony, Jefferson City is the realistic move and it will go early. For a Saturday morning one, Kansas City means leaving before six. There is no comfortable middle, and pretending otherwise would not help anyone.

What we checked, and what we could not

The December schedule, ceremony times and per-college venues come from Missouri’s own December commencement page, with both weekdays verified: 18 December 2026 is a Friday, 19 December a Saturday. The sellout quote, the room count and the 15 percent figure come from named local reporting.

What we could not establish: any commencement policy at the Hampton Inn, a current rate for graduation weekend, and a dollar comparison for either ring city, because the availability tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation.
