Put a commencement on top of that and there is no version of the arithmetic where Malibu absorbs it. This is a structural shortage that exists year-round, which makes it more reliable than any single weekend’s occupancy figure.
Pepperdine’s own Villa Graziadio Executive Center sits on the Malibu campus and is the obvious first call. It publishes no commencement rate, minimum stay or cancellation policy, so there is nothing to report on that front rather than something guessed at.
The date is missing, and it does not stop you booking
Two Pepperdine schools have now published 2027 ceremonies, both at Alumni Park: Graziadio Business School on Saturday 17 April 2027 and the Caruso School of Law on Friday 21 May 2027. Seaver College, the undergraduate school, has not published a 2027 date, and neither has the Graduate School of Education and Psychology. Its most recent ceremony was 2 May 2026 at Alumni Park, kept here as a reference for the shape of a Pepperdine commencement rather than as a prediction. What that means for booking is narrower than it sounds. The map above and the booking links on this page carry no dates. They open on Malibu with the nights left blank for you to fill in. If Seaver has already told your graduate when the ceremony is, and colleges often tell students before the public page changes, put those nights in and reserve.
In a six-hotel town, waiting for an announcement is the expensive move. The rooms do not care whether the date is public yet.
Santa Monica at 25 minutes, Thousand Oaks at 30

Santa Monica, about 25 minutes down the coast, is the nearest genuinely deep hotel market. It is also a beach city with its own rates, so this is relief on availability rather than on price.
Thousand Oaks, about 30 minutes inland, is the option that actually breaks the coastal premium. Further in feel than in minutes, and the sensible choice if the budget matters more than the ocean.
Live per-night availability counts are missing for both, because the research method used for most clusters here would not complete. That is a gap in our data rather than a finding about either market.
What we checked, and what we could not
The six-hotel count and the advice to call ahead come from a local Malibu visitor guide. The 2026 ceremony date and venue come from Seaver College’s own graduation site.
What we could not establish: the 2027 ceremony date, its venue, any commencement-specific policy at the Villa Graziadio or any other Malibu property, and live availability counts for Santa Monica or Thousand Oaks. None of those is published or obtainable, so none is stated here rather than estimated.
