Stay in Hattiesburg itself. The hotel cluster along US 49 and Plaza Drive is roughly a mile from the Bernard Reed Green Coliseum, which is as close as this market gets. The fallback order after that is Laurel at 28 miles, then Gulfport and the coast at 68, then Jackson at 84. With three ceremonies spread across Thursday 10 and Friday 11 December, book against both nights and release one once your ceremony time is confirmed. One warning for the spring: the Saturday 15 May 2027 ceremony is for Coast-based students and it is in Biloxi, seventy miles away, so none of this Hattiesburg arithmetic applies to that one.

Hattiesburg first, and it is not close
There is no on-campus hotel at Southern Miss, so the nearest beds are the chain cluster along US 49 and Plaza Drive, roughly a mile from the Bernard Reed Green Coliseum. That is the whole of the walk-adjacent market. Everything else is a drive.
What makes this cluster worth booking early is not that it is small in absolute terms. It is what sits behind it.
The fallback ladder is steep
| Option | Distance from campus | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Hattiesburg (US 49 / Plaza Dr) | ~1 mile | The whole close-in market |
| Laurel, MS | 28 miles | Small city, own I-59 cluster. The only sub-30-minute fallback |
| Gulfport / the coast | 68 miles | Deep casino-driven inventory, own pricing cycle |
| Meridian, MS | 81 miles | Comparable to Jackson, offers nothing extra |
| Jackson, MS | 84 miles | Largest hotel base in the state |
Laurel is the important row. It is the single thing standing between Hattiesburg filling and a family committing to more than an hour of driving either side of a ceremony. If you are checking alternatives, check Laurel before you look at the coast.
Book both nights, then give one back
Southern Miss runs three ceremonies across two days: Thursday 10 December at 5:00 p.m. for graduate candidates, then Friday 11 December at 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. for undergraduates. The college split is published, so unlike most clusters on this site you can work out your hour before you book.
The 9:00 a.m. ceremony is Business and Economic Development plus Education and Human Sciences. The 2:00 p.m. one is Arts and Sciences plus Nursing and Health Professions.
Read your hour off that, then book. A 9:00 a.m. ceremony effectively requires the Thursday night: Laurel is 28 miles and the coast is 68, and neither is a comfortable pre-nine run in December. A 2:00 p.m. ceremony finishes as the light is going, which makes a 68-mile drive to the coast or 90 minutes to Jackson an unappealing way to end the day, so most families take the Friday night instead.
Families with a master’s candidate on Thursday and an undergraduate on Friday need both nights regardless, and families with graduates in both Friday ceremonies are in town from breakfast to mid-afternoon.
Spring 2027 splits across two cities
Spring is three days rather than two, and the third one is not in Hattiesburg.
| When | Who | Where you need a room |
|---|---|---|
| Thu 13 May, 5:00 p.m. | Graduate candidates | Hattiesburg |
| Fri 14 May, 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. | Undergraduates | Hattiesburg |
| Sat 15 May, 2:00 p.m. | All Coast-based students | Biloxi |
The Saturday ceremony is at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, about seventy miles and an hour and a quarter south. For a Gulf Park family, everything above about Hattiesburg’s thin market is beside the point: the coast is a casino market with far deeper inventory, and its rates move on its own event calendar rather than on anything happening at a university.
The genuinely awkward case is a family with graduates on both campuses. That is Thursday to Saturday across two cities seventy miles apart, and the sensible shape is usually Hattiesburg for the first two nights and the coast for the Saturday, rather than driving the corridor twice in a weekend.
What this page deliberately does not claim
We wanted to put a room count next to the university’s degree-candidate figure, the way our Kansas State and Binghamton pages do. We could not.
Southern Miss reported roughly 1,986 degree candidates for a recent semester, which is sourced and real. But three separate listings for the same Hampton Inn on Plaza Drive gave 66, 79 and 94 rooms, and Visit Hattiesburg’s own directory publishes no counts at all. A capacity figure that three sources disagree about is not a fact, so this page does without one.
We also found no Hattiesburg hotel publishing graduation-specific booking terms, and no named property confirmed sold out for a graduation weekend. The case for booking early here rests on the distance table above, not on a sellout we cannot evidence.

- Hampton Inn by Hilton Hattiesburg (120 Plaza Dr): About a mile from campus, in the Plaza Drive cluster off US 49. Listed here for location only: three separate sources give conflicting room counts for this property and Visit Hattiesburg's own directory gives none, so we are not quoting a capacity. No commencement-specific minimum-stay or cancellation policy was found published.

The ring
| Town | Drive time | Typical availability | Rate vs. epicenter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laurel, MSCheck rooms in Laurel, MS → | 30 min | A live per-night count was not obtained this session. Laurel is a genuinely separate small city with its own interstate hotel cluster on I-59, and it is the only real option inside half an hour. | Not independently rate-compared this session. |
| Gulfport, MSCheck rooms in Gulfport, MS → | 70 min | A live per-night count was not obtained this session. The Mississippi coast carries a deep, casino-driven hotel base that runs on its own demand cycle entirely independent of the university calendar. | Wide range. Coast pricing moves with casino and event demand rather than with anything happening in Hattiesburg. |
| Jackson, MSCheck rooms in Jackson, MS → | 90 min | A live per-night count was not obtained this session. Jackson is the state capital with the largest hotel base in Mississippi, serving government and convention traffic year-round. | Broad metro range; not independently rate-compared this session. |
Distances above are straight-line miles from campus; the minute figures are estimates for I-59 and US 49 driving rather than journeys we timed. No live availability check was completed this session, so these entries describe market structure rather than a per-night count. Meridian, MS sits at a comparable 81 miles and also resolves on our mapping tool; it is not listed separately because it offers nothing Laurel or Jackson does not.

Frequently asked questions
How close can we stay to the Coliseum?
About a mile. Hattiesburg's chain hotels cluster along US 49 and Plaza Drive, just off the highway and a short drive from College Drive. There is no on-campus hotel here, so that cluster is the closest option rather than a compromise.
Which nights should we book?
Thursday 10 and Friday 11 December, then release whichever you do not need. A 9am Friday ceremony effectively requires the Thursday night unless you already live locally. A 2pm Friday ceremony finishes as the December light is going, which makes a 68-mile drive to the coast or 90 minutes to Jackson an unattractive way to end the day.
Is Laurel far enough out to be worth it?
Laurel is 28 miles north on I-59, which is close enough to be genuinely useful and the only fallback inside half an hour. It is a small city with its own interstate hotel cluster. If Hattiesburg looks tight, Laurel is the first place to look rather than the coast.
What about staying on the Gulf Coast?
It is 68 miles and a real option, with the deepest inventory in reach because of the casino market. Two things to weigh. The drive is over an hour each way, and coast pricing moves on its own casino and event cycle rather than on anything happening in Hattiesburg, so it can be cheap or expensive for reasons that have nothing to do with graduation.
Do Hattiesburg hotels have graduation booking rules?
None that we could find published. No minimum-stay requirement, deposit-forfeit date or graduation-specific cancellation policy turned up for any Hattiesburg property. Assume standard terms and check them yourself before committing.
Does any of this apply to the spring Coast ceremony?
No, and that is the point of asking. The Saturday 15 May 2027 ceremony is for Coast-based students and it is at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, about seventy miles from Hattiesburg. Book the coast for that one. The thin-market reasoning on this page is about Hattiesburg and does not transfer.
Why does the map show the city rather than the campus?
Because the Bernard Reed Green Coliseum's own coordinate returns a 404 on the booking map we use. Rather than drop a pin we have not verified, the map is anchored on central Hattiesburg, which is where the hotels are.
