The December round, and a rare December dip

Mississippi State holds a Fall round the cluster did not carry: four ceremonies across two days and two cities.

If your graduate is at MSU-Meridian, that ceremony is in Meridian, about an hour and a half away, and none of the Starkville advice below applies to you.

Starkville was measured across five matched two-night windows on 12 August 2026:

A fall of about a quarter, with controls either side.

That is worth flagging, because December commencements rarely move a hotel market at all. Twenty-four properties is a small base to begin with, so losing a quarter of it matters more than the percentage makes it sound.

Ring counts for the same window: Tupelo about 18 to 29 an hour north, West Point about 16 to 30 at 25 minutes, Columbus about 11 to 15 at 30 minutes. Louisville was checked and holds two to four.

Two hotels, four days

Starkville is one of the most hotel-poor towns in the SEC, and MSU’s commencement is one of the longest on this site. Those two facts together are the entire argument.

Local guidance names two primary hotel options in town, the Hilton Garden Inn and the Hampton Inn, both of which fill quickly for football weekends and Family Weekend. Graduation-weekend rates have been reported reaching $300 to $400 when rooms are available at all. Starkville has other lodging and two is not the literal count of every bed in town, but it is the number of mainstream hotels the town’s own guidance points visitors toward.

Now set that against the length of the event. MSU does not hold a graduation weekend. It holds a graduation week, Tuesday 11 May to Friday 14 May 2027, with ceremonies on four of those days. Families do not all arrive and leave together; they cycle through the same small supply across most of a week.

We should be clear about what is and is not established. No named Starkville property has been independently confirmed sold out for the 2027 dates. The rate figures are local guidance about the pattern rather than a 2027 quote. This cluster rests on supply arithmetic rather than a documented sellout.

Twenty-eight minutes to Columbus, seventy to Tupelo

The figure above sorts by drive time, and the choice here is unusually clear-cut.

Columbus is about 28 minutes away and returned roughly 118 properties on a live availability check with no sold-out signals. It is the obvious first call.

Tupelo is about 70 minutes, two and a half times the drive, and returned about 155 properties. That is barely more inventory for a great deal more driving, repeated on every day of a four-day commencement week.

Neither is a deep market. If your ceremony is one of the Thursday or Friday Starkville sittings and Columbus is gone, the honest position is that this cluster’s options are thin, which is why the advice here is to book as soon as you know your date rather than to rely on a fallback.

Both checks ran in July 2026 for the commencement window, and the tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation, so inventory depth and hotel tier are what we can stand behind rather than a converted dollar figure.

The Meridian ceremony is a different city

Worth stating plainly, because both appear on the same university calendar.

MSU-Meridian graduates on 12 May 2027 at 11 a.m. at the Riley Center. Meridian is roughly 90 miles from Starkville, a separate campus and a separate city.

If that is your graduate’s ceremony, none of the lodging guidance on this page applies. This cluster is anchored on Starkville, and its ring towns, drive times and hotel counts all measure from there.

What we checked, and what we could not

Every ceremony date and time comes from Mississippi State’s own registrar spring 2027 academic calendar, read on 7 August 2026. The weekdays were cross-checked independently against the calendar: 11 May 2027 is a Tuesday and 14 May is a Friday, which fits the Tuesday-to-Friday run the calendar sets out. That check exists because a date carried forward from a previous year almost always fails it, and it has caught nine wrong dates on this project.

The hotel count and the rate range come from local guidance rather than from the properties themselves.

What we could not establish: which colleges sit in which Starkville ceremony, since MSU’s own calendar still lists them as to be determined; any commencement rate, minimum stay or cancellation policy at a named Starkville property; a confirmed sellout; and a dollar comparison for Columbus or Tupelo.
