Tennessee's next round is Fall Commencement on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 December 2026. Doctoral Hooding opens it at 4:00 p.m. on the Thursday, then Friday carries three ceremonies: bachelor's at 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and master's at 7:00 p.m. Spring Commencement then runs Thursday 13 to Sunday 16 May 2027 across ten ceremonies. Everything in both rounds is at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center, 1600 Phillip Fulmer Way, so the variable is the hour rather than the address. Each ceremony runs about two to two and a half hours, doors open 90 minutes beforehand, and no tickets are required. There is no summer ceremony at all: UT says so in as many words.

The next ceremony is in December, not May
Search results for Tennessee graduation mostly surface the spring round, which is the larger one. It is not the next one.
Fall Commencement is Thursday 10 and Friday 11 December 2026, and UT publishes it in full: four ceremonies, every one with a time, a venue and a named list of colleges.
| When | Ceremony | Who |
|---|---|---|
| Thu 10 Dec, 4:00 p.m. | Doctoral Hooding | All doctoral candidates |
| Fri 11 Dec, 9:00 a.m. | Bachelor’s | Education Health and Human Sciences; Emerging and Collaborative Studies; Haslam Business; Natalie L. Haslam College of Music; Social Work; Tickle Engineering |
| Fri 11 Dec, 2:30 p.m. | Bachelor’s | Architecture and Design; Arts and Sciences; Communication and Information; Nursing; Herbert Agriculture |
| Fri 11 Dec, 7:00 p.m. | Master’s | All master’s candidates |
Everything is at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center, 1600 Phillip Fulmer Way.
The shape of that Friday is the thing to notice. Three ceremonies run from nine in the morning to nine at night, so a family with a bachelor’s graduate in the morning group and a master’s graduate in the evening is in Knoxville for a full day and, realistically, two nights. A family with one graduate in the 9:00 a.m. slot is also looking at the night before, because a nine o’clock start is not a drive-in.
Spring 2027, ten ceremonies across four days
Thursday 13 to Sunday 16 May 2027, again entirely at Thompson-Boling Arena.
| When | Ceremony | Who |
|---|---|---|
| Thu 13 May, 9:00 a.m. | Doctoral Hooding | All colleges except Winston College of Law and Veterinary Medicine |
| Thu 13 May, 2:30 p.m. | Winston College of Law | Law only |
| Fri 14 May, 9:00 a.m. | Bachelor’s | Arts and Sciences, surnames L to Z; Communication and Information |
| Fri 14 May, 2:30 p.m. | Bachelor’s | Baker School of Public Policy and Public Affairs; Arts and Sciences, surnames A to K; Herbert Agriculture |
| Fri 14 May, 7:30 p.m. | Master’s | All colleges except Winston College of Law |
| Sat 15 May, 9:00 a.m. | Bachelor’s | Education Health and Human Sciences; Social Work; Natalie L. Haslam College of Music |
| Sat 15 May, 2:30 p.m. | Bachelor’s | Architecture and Design; Emerging and Collaborative Studies; Nursing; Tickle Engineering |
| Sun 16 May, 9:00 a.m. | Bachelor’s | Haslam College of Business, surnames L to Z |
| Sun 16 May, 2:30 p.m. | Bachelor’s | Haslam College of Business, surnames A to K |
Two things in that table cost money if you miss them.
Arts and Sciences is split by surname across the same day, morning and afternoon. Haslam Business is split by surname across the same day too, on the Sunday. If your family has two graduates in one of those colleges with surnames either side of the divide, you are attending two ceremonies six hours apart, which is one long day rather than two trips.
And the round runs into a Sunday. A Sunday-afternoon ceremony finishing around 5:00 p.m. means a Sunday night in Knoxville for anyone not driving home the same evening, which is the night families most often forget to book.
The nine o’clock problem
With ceremonies at 9:00 a.m., 2:30 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., the hour you draw matters more than the date.
Families attending UT graduation frequently stay in Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg, 47 and 58 minutes out, because rooms near campus have been reported at over $500 a night. That trade is usually worth making. It stops being comfortable at 9:00 a.m.
A 9:00 a.m. ceremony from Pigeon Forge means leaving around dawn on mountain roads that carry tourist traffic even in May. A 2:30 p.m. ceremony from the same base is an easy morning. Same weekend, same distance, entirely different day. And the December 7:00 p.m. master’s ceremony finishes near 9:30 p.m., which makes the drive back into the mountains a real decision rather than a formality.
So find your ceremony’s hour first, then decide how far out you are willing to stay. Doing it the other way round is how families end up setting a 5:30 a.m. alarm on the morning of a graduation.
Getting in: doors, tickets, bags, parking
UT publishes more guest detail than most universities on this site, and all of it is worth knowing before the morning itself.
- No tickets. UT states plainly that tickets are not required for guest entry and all guests are welcome.
- Doors open 90 minutes before each ceremony, for graduates and guests alike.
- Guests enter through the upper-level concourse gates.
- Seating and parking are both first come, first served. Wheelchair-accessible seating is on the concourse level, and UT asks that the top few rows of each section be kept free for guests with limited mobility.
- A clear bag policy is enforced and everyone is screened. The arena cannot store prohibited items, so anything that fails the check goes back to the car.
- Parking details, including accessible parking, sit on UT’s Parking and Transportation commencement page rather than the commencement site.
With three ceremonies on the December Friday, the arena empties and refills twice in a day. The 90-minute door opening is what makes an early arrival worth it: the queue for a 2:30 p.m. ceremony forms while the 9:00 a.m. crowd is still leaving.
Two and a half hours, and what that does to a day
UT puts each ceremony at roughly two to two and a half hours.
A 9:00 a.m. ceremony has you out around midday, which leaves the afternoon open and makes a same-day return feasible. A 2:30 p.m. one has you out around 5:00 p.m., which generally means another night. The 7:00 p.m. December master’s ceremony and the 7:30 p.m. May one both end late enough that the following morning, not that evening, is when you travel.
No summer ceremony
Worth stating because families do look for one: there isn’t one.
UT’s own wording is that summer graduates “are invited to participate in either the spring 2027 or fall 2027 commencement ceremonies, as no summer ceremony is held.” A graduate finishing in August walks in December. That is a confirmed absence rather than an unchecked gap.
What we checked, and what we could not
Every date, time, venue and college assignment above was read directly from UT’s own fall 2026 and spring 2027 commencement pages on 17 August 2026. Every day of the week was checked against the calendar independently.
Not published, and each of these is a real gap rather than an oversight on our part:
- The College of Veterinary Medicine’s own ceremony. Vet Med appears on UT’s spring page only as an exclusion from Doctoral Hooding, which implies a separate ceremony. Its date, time and venue appear nowhere we could open.
- Ticket or guest limits. UT says none apply “at this time”, which is a statement that can change.
- Any venue exception. Both pages carry the qualifier “unless otherwise noted” and then note nothing, so all fourteen ceremonies read as being in the same building.
One thing to distrust. Search engines paraphrase UT as holding graduate hooding on Friday 11 December and name a “degree conferral date” of Saturday 12 December. UT’s own page puts Doctoral Hooding on Thursday 10 December, and no conferral date appears on it at all. Book against the university’s page, not the snippet.
We have not measured hotel availability for either round. December is four months out and May is nine, and a single reading that far ahead tells you nothing you can act on. What the arithmetic says is on the where to stay page.
Frequently asked questions
When is the next UT Knoxville commencement?
Thursday 10 and Friday 11 December 2026. Doctoral Hooding is at 4:00 p.m. on the Thursday. Friday carries bachelor's ceremonies at 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and a master's ceremony at 7:00 p.m.
What are the spring 2027 dates?
Thursday 13 to Sunday 16 May 2027, ten ceremonies in all. Both endpoints were checked against the calendar: 13 May is a Thursday and 16 May a Sunday.
Which colleges go on which day in December?
Friday 11 December at 9:00 a.m. covers Education Health and Human Sciences, Emerging and Collaborative Studies, Haslam Business, the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music, Social Work and Tickle Engineering. The 2:30 p.m. ceremony covers Architecture and Design, Arts and Sciences, Communication and Information, Nursing and Herbert Agriculture. The 7:00 p.m. ceremony is all master's candidates.
Are all the ceremonies in one place?
Yes. UT states that both the fall 2026 and spring 2027 ceremonies are at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center, 1600 Phillip Fulmer Way, "unless otherwise noted", and no exception is listed on either page.
Do guests need tickets?
No. UT states that tickets are not required for guest entry and all guests are welcome. Doors open 90 minutes before each ceremony, guests enter through the upper-level concourse gates, seating and parking are first come first served, and a clear bag policy is enforced.
Is there a summer ceremony?
No, and this is stated rather than inferred. UT's own wording is that summer graduates "are invited to participate in either the spring 2027 or fall 2027 commencement ceremonies, as no summer ceremony is held."
Which start time is hardest to travel to?
The 9:00 a.m. ones. Many families stay in Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg, 47 and 58 minutes away, and a 9:00 a.m. ceremony from either means leaving around dawn. The 2:30 p.m. slots are far easier from the same base, and the 7:00 p.m. December master's ceremony is an overnight for almost everyone.
