Both UC Berkeley rounds have dates, and you have to read two different Berkeley sources to find them. Winter Commencement is Saturday 19 December 2026 at Haas Pavilion, published on the commencement site. Commencement is Saturday 15 May 2027, printed in Berkeley's own registrar academic calendar, which is the only place it appears: the commencement site still says spring details come later. The registrar returns the favour by listing Winter Commencement as "To Be Determined". No venue is published for the May round, so do not assume California Memorial Stadium. The structural difference that decides your trip is this: Berkeley says departmental and college graduations run "in the spring semester only", so a December family attends one ceremony and a May family may be attending two on different days.

Two rounds, two sources, and neither one has both
| Round | Date | Venue | Where Berkeley publishes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter 2026 | Saturday 19 December 2026 | Haas Pavilion, 220 Bancroft Way | commencement.berkeley.edu |
| Spring 2027 | Saturday 15 May 2027 | not published | the registrar’s academic calendar |
That split is the whole story of this cluster, and it is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly.
Berkeley’s commencement site publishes December in full and says of the other round: “Details for Spring 2027 Commencement will be announced later this year.”
Berkeley’s registrar calendar publishes May, printing “Commencement Saturday, May 15, 2027”, and says of the other round: “Winter Commencement To Be Determined, commencement.berkeley.edu.”
Each source hands you to the other. Read only one and you will come away believing one of the two ceremonies has no date.
The May date is in the registrar’s calendar, not on the commencement site
Berkeley publishes its two rounds in two different places, and it is worth knowing that before you go looking.
Winter Commencement is on the commencement site. The May 2027 date is not. It is printed in Berkeley’s own registrar academic calendar for 2026-27, corroborated two lines above by “Spring Semester Ends Friday, May 14, 2027”, and 15 May 2027 is a Saturday.
So if you check the commencement site and find no spring date, that silence is not evidence the date does not exist. It is one Berkeley publisher deferring to another, and the registrar has it. The commencement site still says spring details will be announced later in the year, which is about the ceremony’s arrangements rather than its date.
No venue for May, and the obvious guess is a stale page
Haas Pavilion is confirmed for December. It is an indoor arena on the west side of campus.
For May 2027, Berkeley publishes no venue at all. The registrar calendar gives a date and nothing else.
The name that will come up is California Memorial Stadium, and it is where Berkeley holds its spring ceremony. But on Berkeley’s own site that venue currently sits on the spring subpage attached to the already-held May 2026 ceremony, which is a stale page rather than a forward-looking one. The commencement site’s subpages are stale in both directions at the moment: the winter subpage still shows the December 2025 ceremony.
An arena and an open stadium are different problems. An arena has a fixed seat count, so guest limits are more likely to bite, and it takes weather out of the day entirely. A stadium does neither. If which of those you are walking into changes your plans, that detail is not published yet.
December is one ceremony, May is probably two
This is the difference that actually decides how many nights a family books, and Berkeley states it directly:
In addition to the campuswide Commencements in May and December, many departments and student groups hold smaller, more personal graduations in the spring semester only.
For a December graduate, the campuswide ceremony at Haas Pavilion is the event. One day, one building.
For a May graduate, the campuswide ceremony on 15 May may not even be the one the family cares most about. Departmental graduations are smaller, they are where the graduate’s name is read to people who know them, and they run on their own schedules across the spring semester rather than all landing on Commencement day.
None of those departmental dates is published for 2027 yet. If your graduate’s department holds one, ask the department rather than waiting for the university, because the department will know first.
Around 470 properties, and December measured flat
Five matched two-night searches in Berkeley, one session, 16 August 2026:
| Window | Bookable properties |
|---|---|
| 13 to 15 November | 474 |
| 20 to 22 November | 489 |
| 18 to 20 December (commencement) | 487 |
| 8 to 10 January 2027 | 456 |
| 15 to 17 January 2027 | 457 |
The ceremony window came back above its control median of 465.5. At roughly 470 bookable properties Berkeley is the deepest epicenter market measured anywhere on this site, and a single winter ceremony does not register against it.
That is a real result rather than a shrug. Most of this site’s clusters are about a town running out of rooms. This one is not, and the page says so.
What we checked, and what we could not
The May 2027 date comes from Berkeley’s registrar academic calendar PDF for 2026-27, read 17 August 2026. The December date and Haas Pavilion come from Berkeley’s commencement site, read the same day. The departmental-ceremony wording comes from Berkeley’s own department graduations page. Both weekdays were verified: 19 December 2026 and 15 May 2027 are both Saturdays.
Unestablished: ceremony times for either round, the May 2027 venue, all departmental and college ceremony dates for 2027, ticket limits, guest allocations and parking.
What the room market actually costs, and why BART matters more than drive times here: where to stay.

Frequently asked questions
When is UC Berkeley's commencement?
Two rounds. Winter Commencement is Saturday 19 December 2026 at Haas Pavilion. Commencement is Saturday 15 May 2027. Both weekdays check out against the calendar.
Where does the May 2027 date come from?
Berkeley's own registrar academic calendar for 2026-27, which prints "Commencement Saturday, May 15, 2027" and corroborates it with "Spring Semester Ends Friday, May 14, 2027". It is not on the commencement site, which still says spring details will be announced later this year.
Why is the May date not on the commencement site?
Because Berkeley publishes its two rounds in two different places. Winter Commencement is on the commencement site; the May 2027 date is in the registrar's academic calendar instead. If you check the commencement site and find no spring date, that silence is not evidence the date does not exist. It is one Berkeley publisher deferring to another, and the registrar has it.
Where will the May 2027 ceremony be held?
Berkeley has not published a venue for it. California Memorial Stadium is where Berkeley holds its spring ceremony, and it appears on the commencement site's spring subpage attached to the already-held May 2026 ceremony. That is a past round's venue, not a published 2027 one, and we are not printing it as fact.
Are there departmental ceremonies too?
In spring only, and this is the most useful structural fact on the cluster. Berkeley states that "in addition to the campuswide Commencements in May and December, many departments and student groups hold smaller, more personal graduations in the spring semester only." For many families the departmental ceremony is the one they actually attend. In December there is no such second event.
What time do the ceremonies start?
Not published for either round. Berkeley says further details for Winter 2026 will be announced later this year, and the May entry in the registrar calendar is a date only.
Is Berkeley hard to book?
No, and it is the least tight cluster on this site. Five matched two-night searches on 16 August 2026 returned 474, 489, 487, 456 and 457 bookable properties, with the 18 to 20 December window the 487, slightly above a control median of 465.5. Around 470 properties makes this the deepest epicenter market we measure.
