UC Santa Cruz's 2027 commencement starts Friday 11 June at Upper East Field — both of the university's own sources agree on that. They do NOT agree on when it ends. The registrar's calendar gives the span as "06/11-13 Friday-Sunday". The commencement office says "Friday, June 11 to Monday, June 14". Every one of those dates weekday-cross-checks cleanly, so this is a real conflict between two university sources, not a typo in either. Book to the MONDAY. Being wrong that way costs one extra night; being wrong the other way leaves you without a room on the day of the ceremony. Ceremony slots are published as 9 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., but which college takes which is not — the office says the full schedule will be released by January 2027. Unlike most campuses in this batch, the venue IS published.

The university disagrees with itself

Both of UC Santa Cruz’s own sources agree that 2027 commencement starts Friday 11 June, at Upper East Field. They do not agree on when it ends.

Office of the Registrar, future calendars 06/11-13, Friday–Sunday
Commencement office Friday, June 11 to Monday, June 14

This is not one of them mistyping a date. Every date in both readings weekday-cross-checks cleanly: 11 June 2027 is a Friday, 13 June is a Sunday, 14 June is a Monday. Each page is internally consistent. They simply describe different spans.

What to do about it

Book to the Monday. The reasoning is not that the commencement office is more likely to be right, though it is the more specific authority on ceremonies. It is that the two errors are not equally expensive.

Book to Monday and the ceremonies end Sunday: you have paid for one night you did not need.

Book to Sunday and your ceremony is Monday: you have nowhere to sleep on the day you travelled for, in a small coastal town, in June.

Those are not the same mistake, so the cautious span is the right one until someone resolves the conflict.

A plausible explanation is that the Monday holds a graduate ceremony sitting outside the registrar’s undergraduate span. That is a guess. Nobody has confirmed it at source, and this page records it only so that whoever re-checks knows what to look for.

What is published, and what is not

Published: the venue, Upper East Field — genuinely useful, and unusual for the campuses built in this batch, most of which had no 2027 venue at all. Also the ceremony slots: 9 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Not published: which college takes which slot. The commencement office says the event schedule will be released by January 2027. That gap matters because a 9 a.m. ceremony and a 5:30 p.m. ceremony on the same day imply different arrival nights.

Two things specific to this campus

Campus is above the town. UC Santa Cruz sits up in the hills, so every hotel in this cluster involves a drive up to the ceremony, not a walk across. Build that into a 9 a.m. slot in particular.

This is the tight market of the batch. Santa Cruz is a small coastal city with no suburban chain belt to absorb overflow, and commencement falls at the opening of its beach season. Unlike a college town in a quiet week, the town is already filling with people who have nothing to do with the university. Waiting genuinely costs you here in a way it does not at College Park or Minneapolis.

Frequently asked questions

When is UC Santa Cruz's 2027 commencement?

It starts Friday 11 June 2027 at Upper East Field, and the end date depends which university page you read. The Office of the Registrar's future calendars give 2027 commencement as "06/11-13 Friday-Sunday". The commencement office states "Friday, June 11 to Monday, June 14". Both are internally consistent — 11 June is a Friday, 13 June a Sunday, 14 June a Monday — so neither is a simple date error.

Which one should we trust?

For booking purposes, the wider span. The commencement office is the more specific authority on ceremonies, and the asymmetry settles it anyway: if you book to Monday and the ceremonies end Sunday you have paid for one unnecessary night, while if you book to Sunday and your ceremony is Monday you have nowhere to sleep on the day that matters.

Why might the Monday be different?

A plausible explanation is that the Monday carries a graduate ceremony outside the registrar's undergraduate span. That is a GUESS and this page will not present it as more than that — nobody has read it at source. It is recorded so that whoever re-checks knows what to look for.

Where are the ceremonies held?

Upper East Field, published by the commencement office for 2027. That is unusual for this batch of campuses — most had not published a venue at all — so it is one thing you do not need to chase.

What time is our ceremony?

The published slots are 9 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., but the college-to-slot assignment was not published. The commencement office said the event schedule would be released by January 2027. A 9 a.m. slot and a 5:30 p.m. slot on the same day imply different arrival nights, so this is worth waiting for before booking non-refundably.

Is Santa Cruz a difficult place to book?

More difficult than anywhere else built in this batch, yes. It is a small coastal city rather than a metro with slack, and commencement lands in the second week of June, at the opening of the beach season — so the town is already filling with people who are not there for a ceremony. The nearest genuinely deep market is San Jose, over a mountain road.

Is campus near the town?

Above it. UC Santa Cruz sits up in the hills, so every hotel in this cluster is a drive up to the ceremony rather than a walk across. Build the climb into your timing, especially for a 9 a.m. slot.
