UVA's Final Exercises weekend runs 21 to 23 May 2027, confirmed by UVA, and the detail that catches families out is that Final Exercises happen on two different days, split by school. So "the ceremony" is not one event, and a family with graduates in two schools may be attending on both days. UVA has NOT yet published the 2027 venues or times: it states its current detail "pertains to Finals Weekend 2026" and will be updated through the summer and autumn. In the 2026 pattern Valedictory Exercises were at John Paul Jones Arena and Final Exercises on the Lawn at 9:00 a.m. The Lawn is outdoors, and that carries a cost worth knowing before you book flights: candidates receive SIX guest tickets on the Lawn, but only THREE if severe weather moves the ceremony into John Paul Jones Arena.

Final Exercises happen twice, and only one is yours

If you take one thing from this page, take this: UVA holds Final Exercises on two separate days.

The 2027 weekend runs 21 to 23 May, which UVA confirms directly. Valedictory Exercises are on Friday 21 May, and Final Exercises run across Saturday 22 May and Sunday 23 May, divided by school.

The venues and times are a different matter. UVA states that the detail on its site “pertains to Finals Weekend 2026” and will be updated for 2027 through the summer and autumn, so this page carries the 2026 shape as a pattern rather than a 2027 schedule: Valedictory at John Paul Jones Arena, and Final Exercises on the Lawn at 9:00 a.m. on both mornings.

Families arrive every year having booked for the wrong morning. It is an easy mistake, because almost every other university in this project holds one ceremony and UVA’s own materials talk about Final Exercises as though it were singular.

Which school graduates on which day had not been published for 2027 at this check. That is the detail to confirm before anything else, because it decides whether you need the Saturday night, the Sunday night, or both.

The weather can halve your guest list

This is the part worth resolving before anyone books a flight, and it follows directly from the Lawn being an open-air venue.

UVA’s tickets page states that degree candidates are eligible for six guest tickets for Final Exercises on the Lawn. It then adds the condition: “If the event moves to John Paul Jones Arena due to severe weather, candidates will receive 3 tickets.”

So a party of six that travelled for the ceremony can be cut to three admitted guests by a forecast. There is no way to buy around it either: UVA states guest tickets have no cash value, and selling or bartering them is “strictly prohibited and is considered an honor offense” that can void the tickets entirely.

Those numbers are from the 2026 cycle and UVA has not published a 2027 allocation. The structure is what matters: an outdoor ceremony with an indoor fallback that holds fewer people.

The Lawn is outdoors

Final Exercises take place on the Lawn, the terraced green at the centre of Jefferson’s Academical Village. It is one of the more striking settings of any ceremony on this site, and it is entirely open to the sky.

Seating is on grass with sightlines that depend on where you stand rather than which section you booked. Late May in central Virginia can deliver heat, and it can deliver rain. There is no indoor venue that seats the same crowd, so families plan for both rather than hoping.

The Friday’s Valedictory Exercises are the exception: John Paul Jones Arena is indoors and behaves like an ordinary arena event.

A nine o’clock start narrows the ring more than the drive times suggest

A 9:00 a.m. start is the constraint that connects this page to the lodging one.

Charlottesville’s rooms are booked a year out at close to double rates, so many families end up in the ring. Waynesboro at 33 minutes is comfortable for a nine o’clock ceremony. Richmond at 70 minutes means leaving before seven with a family group, on a Saturday or Sunday morning, having likely arrived late the night before.

That is the trade this cluster asks you to make, and the ceremony time is what makes it sharp. If you are choosing between a further town and an earlier booking, the 9:00 a.m. start argues for the earlier booking.

What we checked, and what we could not

The weekend structure, the two Lawn mornings, the 9:00 a.m. start and the Friday Valedictory venue all come from UVA’s own Final Exercises pages. The three dates were cross-checked against the calendar.

Not established for 2027: which schools graduate on the Saturday and which on the Sunday, ticket arrangements, any published rain plan, and parking. The school split is the most consequential of those and the one to watch for.

Frequently asked questions

When are UVA's 2027 Final Exercises?

The weekend runs 21 to 23 May 2027, which UVA confirms. Valedictory Exercises are on the Friday and Final Exercises run across both the Saturday and the Sunday. The 2027 times are not published yet; in 2026 both Final Exercises mornings began at 9:00 a.m.

Why are there two days of Final Exercises?

UVA splits Final Exercises across two mornings for different schools. It is a long-standing pattern and it is the single most common way families get this weekend wrong.

Where is the ceremony held?

Not published for 2027. In 2026 Final Exercises were on the Lawn, the central terraced green of Jefferson's Academical Village, which is outdoors, and Valedictory Exercises were at John Paul Jones Arena, which is indoors. UVA says its 2027 detail is still to come.

Which school graduates on which day?

Not published for 2027 at this check. That is the thing to confirm before booking, because it decides whether your trip includes the Saturday night, the Sunday night, or both.

How many guests can each graduate bring?

Six on the Lawn, and this is the number to plan around. UVA's tickets page states that degree candidates are eligible for six guest tickets for Final Exercises on the Lawn, and that "if the event moves to John Paul Jones Arena due to severe weather, candidates will receive 3 tickets". A rainstorm can therefore halve your admitted party. Tickets also have no cash value and selling or bartering them is treated as an honor offense, so buying a spare is not an option.

What does a 9 a.m. start mean for where I stay?

It narrows the ring considerably. Waynesboro at 33 minutes is comfortable. Richmond at 70 minutes means leaving before seven on the morning of, which is a harder ask for a family group.
