UVA Finals Weekend: Ceremony Times, the Lawn, and Crowd Logistics

Friday through Sunday, May 21-23, 2027

UVA calls the whole stretch Finals Weekend, not just graduation day. The centerpiece is Final Exercises — the university-wide ceremony on the Lawn — which begins at 9:00 a.m. with the student procession down the Lawn’s iconic colonnaded length and runs about two hours. It’s the ceremony most families picture when they think of UVA graduation: thousands of graduates walking the same Lawn Thomas Jefferson designed as the university’s “Academical Village.”

Individual school and department ceremonies happen separately, spread mostly across Sunday, each with its own time and, often, its own venue away from the Lawn.

UVA’s own planning anticipates roughly 20,000 attendees on Saturday and 15,000 on Sunday — and local news reporting puts the weekend’s total population impact on Charlottesville at about 35,500 people. Combined, that’s one of the largest single-weekend crowds of any campus in this project, and it’s why booking pressure here starts so far in advance.

We don’t yet have confirmed, dated guidance on parking-lot locations, shuttle routes, or exact road closures for Finals Weekend 2027 — UVA’s Office of Major Events publishes this closer to the date. Check their site directly as May 2027 approaches; we’ll add verified specifics here once they’re published.
