CSU's Spring 2027 Commencement is FRIDAY 14 AND SATURDAY 15 MAY, per the university's academic calendar. It is two different kinds of event. UNIVERSITY-WIDE COMMENCEMENT at Canvas Stadium gathers the whole graduating class. TWENTY COLLEGE RECOGNITION CEREMONIES run across the same two days, and CSU says those are where you "hear your name called, walk across a stage and receive your diploma cover." So the recognition ceremony is the one your family travels for, and it decides which of the two days you need. CSU had not published the 2027 times or the recognition schedule when we checked.

Two ceremonies, and the name is called at the second one

CSU splits commencement into two things that sound similar and are not, and getting them the wrong way round is the mistake available here.

University-wide Commencement happens at Canvas Stadium. The whole graduating class, one ceremony, the president, the address. In 2026 CSU described more than 8,000 graduates celebrated there.

Recognition ceremonies are run by the colleges. CSU’s own description is unambiguous:

“Recognition ceremonies complement University-wide Commencement by providing the traditional opportunity to hear your name called, walk across a stage and receive your diploma cover.”

There are twenty of them, spread across Friday 14 and Saturday 15 May 2027.

So the stadium event is the one that photographs well and the recognition ceremony is the one a grandparent flew in for. If your family can only manage one, it is not the one in the stadium.

Which day you need depends on your college

This is the practical consequence, and it is the only thing on this page that changes a booking.

Twenty ceremonies across two days means your graduate’s college determines whether you need the Friday or the Saturday. A family that assumes Saturday because graduations happen on Saturdays may be a day late.

CSU had not published the 2027 recognition schedule when we checked, so this page cannot tell you which day is yours. Your graduate’s college can. Ask before booking, and see where to stay for why Fort Collins gives you room to be wrong about price but not about date.

What the calendar does confirm

From CSU’s general catalog academic calendar, for Spring 2027:

Item Date
Last day of classes Friday 7 May
Final examinations Monday 10 to Thursday 13 May
Commencement Friday 14 to Saturday 15 May

Note the gap: finals end on the Thursday and commencement begins on the Friday. There is one day between the last exam and the first ceremony, which is tighter than it sounds if your graduate is also moving out of a residence.

Canvas Stadium is outdoors

Worth stating because it changes what you pack rather than what you book.

The University-wide ceremony is held in CSU’s football stadium. Fort Collins sits at about 5,000 feet and mid-May there can deliver strong sun, wind and a cold afternoon in the same weekend. Whatever the forecast says the week before, bring layers and sun cover.

CSU had not published a weather or relocation plan for 2027 when we checked.

Absent rather than estimated

Not published for 2027 at the time of writing: ceremony times, the twenty-ceremony recognition schedule and its college assignments, guest-ticket or seating policy, parking, accessibility provision, and any severe-weather plan for an outdoor stadium ceremony.

The 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday timing referenced above is CSU’s 2026 arrangement, given for scale and labelled as such. Nothing from that round has been carried forward as though it were confirmed for 2027.

Frequently asked questions

When is CSU's 2027 commencement?

Friday 14 and Saturday 15 May 2027. CSU's general catalog academic calendar lists Commencement as Friday-Saturday, May 14-15, with the last day of classes on 7 May and finals from 10 to 13 May. Both weekdays cross-check.

What is the difference between the two ceremonies?

University-wide Commencement is the single large ceremony at Canvas Stadium for the entire graduating class. Recognition ceremonies are run by the individual colleges, and CSU describes them as providing "the traditional opportunity to hear your name called, walk across a stage and receive your diploma cover." There are twenty of them.

Which one should my family attend?

Both if you can, but if you have to choose, the recognition ceremony is the one with your graduate's name in it. It is also the one that determines which day you need to be in Fort Collins, because the twenty ceremonies are spread across the Friday and the Saturday.

What time do they start?

Not published for 2027. CSU's commencement site still described the Spring 2026 round when we checked, in which University-wide Commencement ran 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. on the Saturday. That is last year's timing, given for scale rather than as a 2027 commitment.

Where is University-wide Commencement held?

Canvas Stadium, CSU's football stadium, which is what allows a single ceremony for a class the university described in 2026 as more than 8,000 graduates. It is an outdoor venue, so mid-May Colorado weather is a real planning factor.

Do guests need tickets?

No guest-ticket policy was published for 2027 when we checked, and this page will not infer one. Recognition ceremonies are run by individual colleges and their arrangements can differ from one another, so that is a question for your graduate's college rather than for the central commencement office.
