Dartmouth Graduation Hotels: The Hanover Inn Is Not an Option

The hotel on the Green is not yours to book

Every campus in this project has a hotel that sells out. Dartmouth has one that never goes on sale.

The Hanover Inn sits on the Dartmouth Green, and during commencement weekend it is reserved for trustees, honorary degree recipients and the 50-year reunion class. Dartmouth’s own commencement lodging page says so directly. It is not a matter of being quick or being lucky.

That single fact reshapes everything else. On most campuses the closest hotel is the prize and the ring towns are the consolation. Here the closest hotel was never in the running, so every graduating family starts the race at the same place: a small number of off-campus rooms, in a small town, in a genuinely remote part of New Hampshire.

A year, and the college says so itself

Dartmouth does not leave families to work out the timeline. Its commencement office states that off-campus lodging “begin[s] taking reservations one year in advance and sell[s] out quickly”.

Universities are usually vaguer than this. A specific interval, published by the institution rather than inferred from a hotel’s marketing, is about as clear a signal as this project finds anywhere.

Thirteen June 2027 minus a year is June 2026, which has passed. If you are reading this without a booking, the honest position is that Hanover itself is probably gone and the useful decision is which ten-minute drive you prefer.

The hotel that rewards regulars

Six South St. is a boutique hotel two blocks from the Green and the closest real option actually in Hanover. Its booking policy is the most unusual thing we found on this cluster.

The hotel’s own site says: “Return guests are rewarded with priority booking at Six South St during the busy commencement season”, and that “the more you visit, the better your chances of securing a guest room”.

Read plainly, that means commencement rooms are partly allocated by loyalty rather than purely by who books first. A family visiting Hanover for the first time, for the ceremony, is behind families who have been coming for four years. That is not a criticism of the hotel, which is being unusually candid, but it does mean a first-time visitor should treat Six South St. as a long shot rather than a plan.

We found no published minimum-stay or deposit terms specific to commencement, so the table below records the booking method and leaves those blank.

Dartmouth will rent you a dorm room

The college runs guest housing in its own undergraduate residence halls through the Commencement and Reunion Housing Office.

The most recently published rate is $70 per person per night, which is a fraction of any hotel in the valley. The rooms are what they sound like: twin beds, most without private bathrooms, linens provided. For families who want to be on campus and do not need a hotel, it is the best value available here by a wide margin.

The constraint is the calendar. For the 2026 cycle the application deadline was 6 April, and the window closed. Dartmouth had not published 2027 dates at this check, so the useful action is to watch that page from early in the year rather than assume a summer deadline.

Ten minutes, and 1,500 rooms between them

This is where the cluster stops being difficult. The two nearest towns are barely further away than the far side of Hanover, and both have real depth.

White River Junction, Vermont is about 10 minutes across the Connecticut River and returned 806 properties on a live check, including chain inventory and the historic Hotel Coolidge.

Lebanon and West Lebanon, New Hampshire are about 11 minutes away and returned 729, including a Hilton Garden Inn and the Fireside Inn. Lebanon also has the regional airport, which makes it the practical choice for anyone flying in.

Neither is a compromise in any meaningful sense. On a campus this remote, a ten-minute drive is what most families end up doing regardless of when they booked.

What we checked, and what we could not

The Hanover Inn restriction, the one-year guidance and the dorm rates all come from Dartmouth’s own pages. The priority-booking policy is quoted from Six South St.’s own site. The 13 June 2027 date comes from the Arts and Sciences registrar’s key-dates calendar, which does not state a weekday, so that was checked separately: it is a Sunday.

What we could not establish: 2027 dorm application dates, the 2027 dorm rate, and any commencement-specific cancellation terms at Six South St. All three were unpublished at this check and are left blank rather than carried forward from last year.
