FAMU's next ceremony is FRIDAY 11 DECEMBER 2026, and Florida State holds its Fall commencement THE SAME DAY, running three ceremonies at 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Two universities graduating in one city on one day is the defining fact of this weekend. What we will not do is overstate what that has done to hotel prices yet: measured four months out, Tallahassee availability for 10 to 12 December sits about 15% below the surrounding weekends, which is real but nothing like the 58% collapse the city sees for FAMU Homecoming in October. Book early because of the collision, not because rooms have already gone. FAMU's Fall ceremony is at 4 p.m. in the Alfred Lawson Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium; Spring 2027 start times are TBA.

Two universities, one city, one Friday

FAMU’s Fall commencement is Friday 11 December 2026.

Florida State’s Fall commencement is also Friday 11 December 2026, and FSU runs three ceremonies that day, at 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Tallahassee is a city of under two hundred thousand people. On that Friday it hosts the graduating families of both its universities at once.

That is the single most important fact on this page, and it is the reason to book early. It is not, however, a reason to panic, and the next section explains why.

What the market actually looks like right now

It would be easy to run the collision above straight into a sellout warning. We measured instead.

Running the same two-night search across matched windows on 12 August 2026, Tallahassee availability for 10 to 12 December came in roughly 15% below the surrounding weekends. Real, but modest.

For comparison, the same method applied to FAMU Homecoming weekend in October shows availability falling by about 58%. That is what a genuinely squeezed Tallahassee weekend looks like in the data, and December is not currently it.

Two honest readings of that, and you should hold both:

The optimistic one is that four months out you still have choice, and you are booking into a normal market at a mild premium rather than fighting for scraps.

The cautious one is that a two-university graduation day has not yet shown up in the numbers, which is not the same as it never showing up. Families book graduation late, and FAMU’s December time was only published recently. The dip may deepen sharply as families confirm their plans.

Book now because that asymmetry is entirely against you. There is no version of waiting that improves your position.

The start time, now that it is published

FAMU lists the Fall 2026 ceremony at 4 p.m. Spring 2027 (Friday 30 April and Saturday 1 May) is still TBA.

A 4 p.m. Friday ceremony is a gentler trip than a 9 a.m. one: arrive that morning if you are close, be at the doors by about 2:30 p.m. (doors open 90 minutes before), and expect the evening to run late. A Thursday night is for the Thursday 4 p.m. rehearsal, a long drive, or Valdosta, ninety-five minutes away, where a late ceremony still means a night drive home. Given the collision above, a refundable rate is still the better error.

FAMU names the Alfred Lawson Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium for Fall 2026. It names no venue for Spring 2027, so this page does not carry December’s venue across to spring.

The ring

Where Drive Bookable properties
Thomasville, GA 46 min 27
Bainbridge, GA 50 min 12
Marianna, FL 65 min 17
Valdosta, GA 95 min 55

Thomasville is the one to try first, closest at 46 minutes and just over the Georgia line, outside whatever Tallahassee is doing. It is also small, so it goes early.

Valdosta has more than twice the inventory of anywhere else in the ring, and its hotel economy does not move with Tallahassee’s, which is precisely why it still has rooms. The cost is ninety-five minutes each way, twice, on a day whose start time you may not know until close to the event.

Bainbridge and Marianna are backstops rather than plans.

What is not established

FAMU has published no start time and no venue for Fall 2026 or either Spring 2027 day. No ticket or guest allocation policy was published when we checked, and no parking, shuttle or accessibility detail.

Spring 2027 runs Friday 30 April and Saturday 1 May, with degrees conferred on the Saturday. Whether Florida State’s spring ceremony again lands on that same weekend is not confirmed, because FSU had not published its Spring 2027 dates. Historically it has. We are not treating history as a schedule.

For homecoming, which is by measurement the tightest weekend of FAMU’s year, see homecoming.

Counts are bookable properties returned for an identical two-night search, 10 to 12 December 2026, run against a single booking engine in one session on 12 August 2026. One caveat worth stating plainly: the epicenter and ring figures are returned at different geographic scopes by that engine, so the ring towns are comparable with each other but should not be subtracted from or ranked directly against the Tallahassee number. Where a measurement could not be made consistently it is omitted rather than estimated.

Frequently asked questions

When is FAMU's next commencement?

Friday 11 December 2026 at 4 p.m., in the Alfred Lawson Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium, per FAMU's own commencement page. Spring 2027 then runs across Friday 30 April and Saturday 1 May, both TBA, with no venue named.

Why does Florida State matter to my booking?

Because FSU holds its Fall 2026 commencement on the same day, 11 December, with three separate ceremonies at 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Two universities in one mid-sized city on one Friday is a materially different demand event from either alone, and FSU's three-ceremony structure spreads its families across the whole day rather than concentrating them.

Is Tallahassee already sold out?

No, and we are not going to tell you it is. Measured on 12 August 2026, availability for the 10 to 12 December window sits around 15% below the neighbouring weekends. That is a genuine dip and a good reason to book now, but it is not a sellout and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

What about the "sold out already" quote I have seen?

That quote is real and this project verified it, but it describes a SPRING commencement weekend, not December. It is evidence about what Tallahassee can do under pressure, not evidence about the December window. We keep the two apart on purpose.

Where should I book if Tallahassee is full?

Thomasville, Georgia is nearest at 46 minutes with 27 properties. Bainbridge is 50 minutes with 12, Marianna 65 minutes with 17, and Valdosta is the deepest at 55 properties but 95 minutes each way. Thomasville goes first because it is closest.

What time is the ceremony?

4 p.m. on Friday 11 December 2026, with doors 90 minutes before. Spring 2027 start times are TBA, and a 9 a.m. ceremony and a 7 p.m. ceremony imply completely different bookings, so confirm with your graduate's college before committing to spring dates.

How many nights should I book?

For December, one night is workable if you are close: a 4 p.m. Friday ceremony lets you arrive that morning. Two, arriving Thursday, for anyone attending the Thursday 4 p.m. rehearsal or driving a long way. If you end up in Valdosta, ninety-five minutes each way, the return is a night drive either way.
