Manhattan, Kansas calls itself the Little Apple and its hotel base is sized accordingly. Local news reports K-State awarding roughly 3,300 degrees at a single spring commencement, against a closest hotel with just over 100 rooms. The ring offers no quick relief: Topeka is 56 minutes away and Kansas City 105. That is the widest gap between demand and nearby supply of any Kansas campus on this site, and it is why the practical advice here is to book before you have finalised anything else. Manhattan Campus Commencement runs Friday 14 and Saturday 15 May 2027 at Bramlage Coliseum.

December is fine. May is not.
K-State runs two rounds and they are not comparable. Measured in one session on 12 August 2026, using matched windows of the same length within each round.
December 2026, three-night windows around the 11 and 12 December ceremonies:
| Window | Bookable properties |
|---|---|
| 3 to 6 December 2026 | 24 |
| 10 to 13 December 2026 (commencement) | 25 |
| 17 to 20 December 2026 | 24 |
| 7 to 10 January 2027 | 25 |
Flat. The ceremony window ties for the highest.
May 2027, two-night windows around the 14 and 15 May ceremonies:
| Window | Bookable properties |
|---|---|
| 23 to 25 April 2027 | 20 |
| 30 April to 2 May 2027 | 19 |
| 14 to 16 May 2027 (commencement) | 6 |
| 21 to 23 May 2027 | 16 |
| 28 to 30 May 2027 | 16 |
Six properties. A fall of roughly 70 percent, with controls on both sides.
That is the number that matters on this cluster, and it lines up with everything else known about it: local reporting has K-State awarding around 3,300 degrees at a single spring commencement, against a nearest hotel of just over 100 rooms. Manhattan simply does not have the beds.
The December round, by contrast, is an ordinary week in town. If your graduate finishes in the autumn, most of the urgency on this page does not apply to you.
Three thousand three hundred degrees, a hundred rooms
Manhattan, Kansas calls itself the Little Apple. The name is a joke about scale, and the scale is the whole story here.
Local news reports K-State awarding roughly 3,300 degrees at a single spring commencement. The closest hotel to campus has just over 100 rooms. Most graduates bring more than one person, so the demand arriving over that weekend runs into the thousands against a nearby supply measured in hundreds.
Manhattan has more than one hotel, and nobody should read 100 rooms as the town’s entire inventory. It is the supply at the front of the queue, and it is the number that explains why this weekend behaves the way it does.
The gap to anywhere else, and the trap of copying a plan from Lawrence
Most campuses on this site have a fallback town twenty or thirty minutes out. K-State does not, and the distances are worth stating precisely because they are easy to underestimate.
Junction City is about 25 minutes west on I-70 and holds single figures to around ten properties. It is the nearest thing Manhattan has to an overflow town and it is genuinely small.
Topeka is 56 minutes away with around 32 measured properties, and Salina is about 70 minutes west with around 32. Lawrence is 85 minutes and the deepest of the four at around 36, though it is KU’s home town and its own university calendar can compete for those rooms.
Kansas City is not listed. It sits roughly two hours from Manhattan, and the three towns above are all closer and all sufficient. Be wary of very large property counts quoted for towns in this region: they are regional search totals rather than rooms in the named place.
There is a trap here for anyone comparing Kansas campuses. This site also covers KU, in Lawrence, where those same two cities are 28 and 41 minutes away. Manhattan sits considerably further west, so the ring that makes Lawrence manageable does not apply here. Copying a plan from one to the other puts an extra hour in the car each way.
Topeka is the sensible first call on distance. Kansas City is the one that will still have something when Topeka has gone, at the cost of a genuine two-hour round trip on ceremony day.
Both checks ran in July 2026 for the commencement weekend, and the tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation, so inventory depth and hotel tier are what we can stand behind rather than a converted dollar figure.
Two days, not one
The nearer round is Fall 2026: Friday 11 December (Graduate School, 1:00 p.m.) and Saturday 12 December (8:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., by college), all at Bramlage Coliseum. Commencement at the Manhattan campus then runs Friday 14 and Saturday 15 May 2027, at Bramlage Coliseum.
The span is the part to get right. K-State’s own academic calendar lists “14-15, Friday-Saturday, Manhattan Campus Commencement”, and plenty of listings compress that to a single Friday date. A family booking from the compressed version arrives a night short of what the weekend actually needs, in a market where the next town is an hour away.
Which ceremony is yours depends on your college, and K-State had not published the 2027 college-by-college assignment when we checked.
What we checked, and what we could not
The dates come from Kansas State’s own registrar academic calendar, read on 7 August 2026, and both weekdays were cross-checked independently: 14 May 2027 is a Friday and 15 May is a Saturday, matching the calendar’s own labels. That check exists because a date carried forward from a previous year almost always fails it, and it has caught nine wrong dates on this project. It earned its keep again here, on a different line of the same document: the calendar’s Salina campus entry reads “9, Saturday”, but 9 May 2027 is a Sunday, so that line is a table-extraction artifact and is not used. Salina is a separate campus in any case.
The degree count comes from local reporting on a past commencement.
What we could not establish: the 2027 college-by-college ceremony schedule, start times, ticket limits, any commencement rate or cancellation policy at a named Manhattan property, and a dollar comparison for Topeka or Kansas City.

Counts are bookable properties for an identical three-night search, 10 to 13 December 2026, run against a single booking engine in one session on 12 August 2026. Kansas City is not listed. It sits roughly two hours from Manhattan, which is further than any of the towns above, and it offers nothing that Topeka does not at half the drive.

Frequently asked questions
How many graduates does K-State have?
Local news has reported roughly 3,300 degrees awarded at a single spring commencement. Multiply that by the family members who travel for a graduation and set it against a closest hotel of just over 100 rooms, and the shape of the weekend is clear without needing any adjectives.
How far is the nearest fallback?
Closer than most descriptions of Manhattan suggest. Junction City is about 25 minutes west on I-70, though it is small, in single figures to around ten properties. After that it is a real jump: Topeka is about 56 minutes and Salina about 70. Manhattan is not a suburb of anywhere, but it is not as stranded as a Topeka-first answer implies.
Is this the same as the KU cluster?
No, and the difference matters if you are comparing. KU is in Lawrence, where Topeka is 28 minutes and Kansas City 41. From Manhattan those same two cities are 56 and 105 minutes. Manhattan sits considerably further west.
Which town should I try first?
Junction City at about 25 minutes, if you only need a room or two, since it is the nearest and smallest. For anything larger, Topeka at 56 minutes with around 32 measured properties, or Salina at 70 with around 32. Lawrence is furthest at 85 minutes but deepest at around 36, with the caveat that it is KU's town and has its own calendar.
When exactly is commencement?
Friday 14 and Saturday 15 May 2027, at Bramlage Coliseum on the Manhattan campus. K-State's own academic calendar lists "14-15, Friday-Saturday, Manhattan Campus Commencement". We re-read it on 7 August 2026 and checked both weekdays against the calendar.
