There is no Minnesota graduation day

Most universities on this site have one commencement, or two if they run a December round. The University of Minnesota has neither. Each college schedules its own ceremony, and the 2027 dates we could confirm at source already run from Thursday 6 May to Saturday 15 May — ten days, spanning two separate weekends.

That makes this cluster different in a way that matters before you look at a single hotel. At a university with one ceremony, getting the date wrong costs you a night. Here it can cost you the trip.

What is not confirmed, and the difference between two kinds of missing

This is worth separating carefully, because “we don’t know” has two different causes here.

The College of Science and Engineering’s commencement page carried no 2027 date when checked. That is a genuine absence — the university has not published it.

The College of Liberal Arts and the Carlson School both refused automated access. Their status is unknown, not unpublished. A page that blocks a robot is not a page without a date, and reporting it as one would be exactly the kind of quiet error this site exists to avoid. If your graduate is in either, check directly — the date may well be sitting there.

Between them, those three cover a very large share of Minnesota’s graduates. For many families reading this, the honest position is that the date does not exist yet or cannot be confirmed from here.

What to do, in order

1. Identify the college. Not the university, not the department — the degree-granting college. That is the unit that schedules ceremonies.
2. Find that college’s published 2027 date, from the college’s own page.
3. Check the registration deadline, which is separate from the ceremony and earlier. Biological Sciences closes registration on 1 April 2027; other colleges set their own.
4. Only then book. Minneapolis is a large market and the demand is spread across ten days, so you are not in a race — the risk here is precision, not speed.

The one advantage of all this

Spreading commencement across ten days, several colleges and more than one venue does something useful: it disperses the demand. A single ceremony can overwhelm a small city. This arrangement puts a fraction of that load on any given night, inside one of the larger hotel markets in the country.

You are unlikely to struggle to find a room in Minneapolis for your date. You are quite likely to book the wrong week if you assume a university this size graduates everyone at once.
