UMD's commencement is Friday evening 7 May 2027 for graduate programs and Saturday 8 May from 10:00 AM for undergraduates by college, per the university's commencement homepage as read on 20 September 2026 and the registrar's calendar; UMD holds no fall ceremony. The ceremonies are downtown at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center on the harbour rather than on the hillside campus, which puts Canal Park's hotels within a mile: the Hampton Inn with 103 rooms and the Lift Bridge Lodge with 123 rooms and suites on Canal Park Drive, and the South Pier Inn across the lift bridge on Park Point. An undergraduate's family needs the Friday night; a graduate student's family the Friday night too, arriving by late afternoon. Duluth is a tourist city with a much larger hotel base up the hill and along I-35; Superior is 11 minutes across the bridge, Hermantown 15 minutes by the airport. Canal Park fills first.

The ceremony is downtown, so the hotels are too

UMD’s campus is on the hill above Duluth; its commencement is not. The research behind this page quotes UMD’s guest page as putting every ceremony at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, 350 Harbor Drive, on the harbour, with the undergraduate ceremonies in the AMSOIL Arena. This site read UMD’s commencement homepage once on 20 September 2026 and then found the site refusing every automated visit, so the venue is carried from that research rather than re-read; the ceremony weekend logistics page sets out exactly what was verified.

What is not in doubt is where the DECC is: beside Canal Park, Duluth’s tourist district. That puts three hotels within a mile. The Hampton Inn Duluth Canal Park, 310 Canal Park Drive, has 103 rooms over three floors per HotelGuides, three minutes from the venue. A block along, the Lift Bridge Lodge, 408 Canal Park Drive, has 123 rooms and suites. Across the Aerial Lift Bridge on Park Point, the South Pier Inn, 701 Lake Avenue South, is a small independent with no published count and a bridge that rises for ships between it and the DECC.

None of the three publishes a commencement-specific minimum stay, prepayment or cancellation rule, and none is claimed here.

Friday evening, Saturday morning, no December

Two UMD sources agree on the day. The registrar’s 2026-27 calendar: “May 8 Saturday Commencement.” The commencement homepage, as read before it closed to fetchers: “Graduate Ceremony - Friday May 7, 2027 Evening ceremony for all college UMD graduate program”, with “more details to come”, and “Undergraduate Ceremonies - Saturday May 8, 2027 10:00 AM” leading a per-college list that begins with the College of Education & Human Service Professions. 7 May 2027 is a Friday, 8 May a Saturday.

And, from the same page: “Please note that a fall ceremony is not held.” No December round.

An undergraduate’s family needs the Friday night. A graduate student’s family needs the Friday night too, in town by late afternoon. Saturday night is optional, and on a May weekend in Canal Park it is also a nice one.

Superior across the bridge, Hermantown up the hill

Duluth’s own hotel base beyond Canal Park, up the hill and along I-35, is the first overflow and is large. After that: Superior, Wisconsin, 11 minutes across the Blatnik Bridge, with chain hotels on Tower Avenue; Hermantown, 15 minutes, by the airport with a chain cluster on Highway 53; Cloquet, 29 minutes down I-35, for families driving up from the Twin Cities.

Drive times are off-peak road routes computed on 20 September 2026, not measured journeys. No availability series has been run for any of them.

Not claimed here

No ticket, parking or doors-open rule, because UMD’s guest page could not be read. No availability count, because none was measured. No graduate count, because UMD does not publish one on the pages read. No room count for the South Pier Inn, because none was confirmed. The venue is stated as the research packet’s read of UMD’s page, not as this site’s own.

  • Hampton Inn Duluth Canal Park: 310 Canal Park Drive, in the Canal Park district, about eight tenths of a mile and three minutes from the DECC. 103 rooms over three floors per HotelGuides. Hilton's own page returned 403 on 2026-09-20. No commencement-specific minimum stay, prepayment or cancellation policy was found, and none is claimed. Its coordinate returned 404 on Stay22's embed endpoint (twice), so it carries no per-row pin.
  • Lift Bridge Lodge: 408 Canal Park Drive, a block from the Hampton, about a mile and three minutes from the DECC. 123 rooms and suites over three floors per HotelGuides. Its coordinate returned 404 on Stay22's embed endpoint, so no pin. No commencement-specific policy was found.
  • South Pier Inn: 701 Lake Avenue South, on Park Point across the Aerial Lift Bridge from Canal Park, about a mile and a quarter and five minutes from the DECC when the bridge is down. A small independent; no room count was confirmed in an English-language directory or on its own site, so none is stated. The lift bridge raises for ship traffic and can add minutes. Its coordinate returned 404 on Stay22's embed endpoint, so no pin. Location from OpenStreetMap.

Frequently asked questions

Which hotel is closest to the DECC?

The Hampton Inn Duluth Canal Park at 310 Canal Park Drive, about eight tenths of a mile and three minutes, 103 rooms per HotelGuides. The Lift Bridge Lodge at 408 Canal Park Drive is a block further with 123 rooms and suites. The South Pier Inn at 701 Lake Avenue South is across the Aerial Lift Bridge on Park Point, five minutes when the bridge is down.

Will Canal Park sell out?

No matched-window availability series has been run for Duluth, so this page publishes no count, and no university or hotel statement about sell-outs was found. Structurally Canal Park is a small tourist district beside the venue on a May weekend; it is the first place to fill and the city has plenty behind it.

Which night do we need?

The Friday night, 7 May 2027, for the Saturday undergraduate ceremonies, which begin at 10:00 AM. A graduate student's family also needs the Friday night, arriving by late afternoon for the evening ceremony, whose time UMD has not yet posted. The Saturday night is optional.

Where is the overflow?

Up the hill and along I-35 within Duluth itself first. Then Superior, Wisconsin, 11 minutes across the Blatnik Bridge; Hermantown, 15 minutes, by the airport with a chain cluster on Highway 53; Cloquet, 29 minutes down I-35, for families driving from the Twin Cities.

Do we need tickets?

Not confirmed by this site. UMD's commencement site began returning 403 to automated visits after one read on 20 September 2026, and the guest page with ticket and parking rules could not be captured. The research packet for this cluster reported that tickets are required for the undergraduate ceremonies; treat that as unverified and ask your graduate.

Is there a December ceremony?

No. UMD's commencement homepage states: "Please note that a fall ceremony is not held." Read on 20 September 2026.
