The University of Montana had not published a 2027 commencement date at the time of this check; the most recent confirmed ceremony was May 9, 2026 at the Adams Center, shown here as a labelled reference. Missoula itself books comfortably — the DoubleTree Edgewater is walking distance from campus — but the nearest verified alternative markets are Polson at 75 minutes and Butte at two hours.

Missoula is not the problem
Start with what is genuinely reassuring, because the rest of this page is about a constraint.
Missoula is a real city with a working hotel market. The DoubleTree by Hilton Missoula Edgewater sits on the Clark Fork within walking distance of campus; Comfort Inn University is adjacent to it; Residence Inn Missoula Downtown is about half a mile out, with a Days Inn, a Holiday Inn Express and others around them. No named property was confirmed sold out for a commencement weekend, and this cluster is graded toward the lower end of our scale accordingly.
If you book Missoula in reasonable time, you will be fine.
The date situation, stated plainly
The University of Montana had not published a 2027 commencement date when we checked. Its commencement page referenced spring 2026 and nothing further — no spring 2027, and no fall 2026 date either.
So this cluster carries the May 9, 2026 ceremony at the Adams Center as a clearly labelled reference. It tells you what a Missoula graduation weekend looks like — early May, one main venue, the Adams Center on campus. It does not tell you when the next one is, and we are not going to imply otherwise.
There is a second ceremony worth knowing about: Montana also graduates in the autumn, and local reporting recorded more than a thousand graduates at a December 2025 fall ceremony. That is a substantial event by the standards of a fall commencement. Its 2026 date had not been published either.
The one link that matters on this page is the university’s own commencement page. Check it before you book anything, and treat every date here as context rather than instruction.
Booking into a city that can hold it
The reason Missoula still merits a page despite the date uncertainty is the geography around it.
Most clusters on this site describe a town too small for its own graduation, with a ring of alternatives fifteen to forty minutes out. Missoula inverts that. The city can hold its graduation; what it does not have is anywhere nearby to spill into. Our verified fallbacks are Polson at about 75 minutes and Butte at about two hours — and the two obvious closer options down the Bitterroot Valley, Hamilton and Stevensville, both failed to resolve on our mapping tool.
The practical translation is simple. Booking early here is not about beating other families to a scarce room. It is about not ending up in a position where your only remaining options are an hour and a quarter away, in Montana, possibly in winter.

- DoubleTree by Hilton Missoula Edgewater: Described as within walking distance of the University of Montana, on the Clark Fork. No commencement-specific terms are published.
- Residence Inn by Marriott Missoula Downtown: Downtown, roughly half a mile from campus. Listed as a real option rather than on the strength of a published graduation policy.
- Comfort Inn University: Immediately adjacent to campus. Included because proximity is what goes first on a ceremony weekend, not because a policy was found.

The ring
| Town | Drive time | Typical availability | Rate vs. epicenter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polson, MTCheck rooms in Polson, MT → | 75 min | A live per-night count was not obtained this session. Polson sits at the south end of Flathead Lake with a small, seasonal hotel base built around summer lake tourism rather than year-round demand. | Generally below Missoula, and seasonal; not independently rate-compared this session. |
| Butte, MTCheck rooms in Butte, MT → | 120 min | A live per-night count was not obtained this session. Butte is a genuinely separate Montana city on I-90 with its own independent hotel base and interstate traffic. | Broadly below Missoula; not independently rate-compared this session. |
Hamilton and Stevensville, the natural closer options down the Bitterroot Valley south of Missoula, both failed to resolve on our mapping tool and are deliberately not listed with coordinates we could not verify — worth searching directly, since both are far closer than either town above. Helena also verified but is not listed, being a similar distance to Butte in a direction fewer families travel from. A live Google Hotels availability check could not be completed this session.

Frequently asked questions
What is the confirmed commencement date?
There isn't one yet. The University of Montana's commencement page referenced only spring 2026 at the time of this check — no spring 2027 date and no fall 2026 date. The May 9, 2026 ceremony at the Adams Center is shown on this cluster as a clearly labelled reference for the shape of a Missoula graduation weekend, not as a prediction. Check [umt.edu/registrar/commencement](https://www.umt.edu/registrar/commencement/) before booking.
Does Montana hold a fall ceremony too?
Yes. Local reporting recorded more than a thousand graduates at a fall ceremony at the Adams Center in December 2025. The university had not published a date for a fall 2026 equivalent when we checked, which is why this cluster does not carry one.
Which hotels are closest to campus?
The DoubleTree by Hilton Missoula Edgewater is described as within walking distance, on the Clark Fork. Comfort Inn University sits adjacent to campus and Residence Inn Missoula Downtown is roughly half a mile away. None publishes commencement-specific terms.
How tight is Missoula really?
Less tight than most towns on this site, and we would rather say so than manufacture urgency. Missoula is a genuine city with a real hotel base and no named property was confirmed sold out for a commencement weekend. The pressure comes from geography, not inventory.
What happens if Missoula is full?
You drive a long way. Polson is about 75 minutes north and Butte about two hours east — see the [ring-town page](/montana/sold-out-now-what/). There is no twenty-minute suburb to fall back on, which is the real constraint here.
